from the President...
“I’m glad to see that... (we)... are moving forward with everything. We have suffered the shocking
loss of two critical people this year - not just because of the work they did for MSMTA but because
of who they were as human beings. MSMTA will survive because of... (its)... people, but we will
continue to feel the loss personally of Steve and Judy.”
The above is from a message from a long-time member. He is
correct that MSMTA will, and is, surviving, but the sudden and
heartbreaking death of Judy Ferencz on August 23 left us reeling
in shock, and for a few weeks, it was difficult to even consider the
direction we should take to continue the work that must be done.
The summer had been spent planning and organizing, everything
was handled, pending board decision ... and then this terrible loss.
In Judy’s honor, the MSMTA Board of Directors has voted to
contribute $500.00 to the Carroll County Community Fund.
I am happy to report that we are now far along on the path to
recovery. We recently hired Sook Fong Chang, a highly qualified
database manager and web designer, and Libby Francisco of Noteworthy Enterprises as layout
designer for the newsletters, directory, and other publications. Claudette Horwitz has agreed
to serve as Publications Vice- President, a position she held for many years before serving as
MSMTA President. She was also on the committee which formed the MSMTA website, and
served as Web Coordinator for the first years of its existence, so she brings much needed
experience to this position. The website should be updated, with the member search feature
operational again, very soon.
In September, I attended the MTNA Leadership Summit in Cincinnati, and tried to choose the
sessions which seemed to best address the issues of concern to a majority of our members. I
brought back some information/suggestions for Local Associations, which has been passed
on to Betsy Jo Angebranndt, who has agreed to be the Local Association Chair for MSMTA.
She and all the other Local Association Presidents will meet periodically throughout the year to
share information and concerns. I also brought samples of the MTNA programs for students
-year end evaluation programs, certificates, etc. - which actually look better “up close and
personal” than they do in the AMT magazine. Some teachers who are discouraged with Guild,
or who are seeking alternatives, particularly for the average student, might find this program
interesting. The samples will be displayed at the MSMTA Convention exhibit room in Salisbury
on November 1 and 2. All in all, it was a very worthwhile weekend, and I was glad to meet so
many colleagues from around the country. In particular, I was impressed with our own Eastern
Division delegation- many people with a lot on the ball, who are concerned with meeting the
needs of the individual professionals in our state organizations.
Maxine Lewack is busily preparing outstanding programs for the MSMTA Convention. Please
plan on attending- you owe it to yourself, and to your students. There is always so much to be
learned and new perspectives to be gained. There are several nationally known, outstanding
pedagogues who will be making presentations This year, there will be a special award ($$$) for
the Local Association who has the highest percentage of its membership in attendance. (Last
year’s winner would have been Southern Maryland MTA- can they do it again)
See you there!

Strategies for Coping with Performance Anxiety
Since even a lesson can be interpreted as a performance by some
students, their potential may never be achieved because of the
intrusion of excessive performance anxiety. This session will
address the issue of performance anxiety, presenting a variety of
options, enabling the teacher and/or the performer to determine
which combination of approaches might be most helpful. The
techniques to be discussed will include:
1. Breathing 5. Desensitization
2. Muscle relaxation 6. Medical advances
3. Cognitive thinkin 7. Practical advice
4. Imagery
This session will assist teachers and students in viewing performance
anxiety as a positive element, not the enemy.
An Injury-Preventative Prescription:
Healthy Practicing Strategies
Practicing -- it’s something we all do --young beginners and veteran
professionals, alike. Yet, it is too often viewed as tedious drudgery.
Efficient, healthy practicing strategies are the key to a lifetime of
joyous, injury-free performing. With pianists spending anywhere
from three to as many as twenty-eight, or more, hours per week
at the piano, we need to ensure that each student has cultivated a
resourceful and imaginative attitude, has access to a healthy practice
environment and has developed a thoughtful working agenda. This
session will examine the role of the teacher in helping students
liberate their practice in an effort to free their musicality.
The Art of Communication:
Nurturing Resourceful and Spirited Students
What is the magic spark that serves as the impetus that encourages a
student to strive for a higher level of musicianship Although much
of our focus is on teaching students a specific skill, helping them
become resourceful pianists and reaching their musical potential,
piano mastery is only a small portion of what we teach. As a result
of cumulative piano lesson experiences, students develop attitudes
and beliefs about music, learning and themselves. Teachers who are
Mapping: A New Way to Learn Music
This is a basic introduction to mapping music. In this session I
present the basic principles and procedures for mapping music and
show how the technique can be used to help students learn music
efficiently and memorize with security. I use examples from piano
repertoire at all levels to illustrate typical applications, including
melodic and harmonic mapping, mapping the overall form, and
mapping problem passages. Additional examples show possibilities
for teaching functional skills (such as transposing, harmonizing,
improvising, etc.) and for designing listening activities and prereading
experiences.
Ten Practice Strategies for Efficient Learning
This is a look at some basic strategies that promote awareness of
patterns and structure in a piece of music as a means to efficient
learning and secure memory. These techniques grow out of the
basic principles of mapping and can readily be combined with
mapping in a comprehensive approach to learning:
1. Reductions, or Playing the “Skeleton” - Using melodic,
harmonic, and rhythmic reductions.
2. Practicing Patterns (Scales, Arpeggios, Chords, Intervals)
3. Counting Strategies
4. Rhythmic Variation
5. Techniques for Fingering Security
6. Imaginary Practice and Silent Practice
7. Starting from the end
8. Memory checks
9. Using a tape recorder
10. The “First Try”
perceptive and skillful communicators are those most likely to succeed in instilling a love of music, building their students’ independence
and self confidence and helping them achieve their goals. I hope to engage those in attendance at this session in a lively discussion that
will include topics such as motivating students, offering feedback, the significance of responding to learning styles and balancing teaching
approaches, to name just a few.

that had been difficult to get locally, as
well as a variety of theory books, and
ear training tapes or CD’s. If you have
a special request for a particular type
of music, tell Jo Makowski as soon as
possible and she will try to arrange for
Burt to send it. A convention discount
applies to all purchases made.
Many MSMTA composers will also have
a display of their materials available for
purchase. These include, to date:
Judith Ferencz Memorial Grants
presented by Jordan Kitt’s Music Company
In honor of Judy Ferencz, who died in August, the Jordan Kitt’s Teachers Grants, which have been awarded
since 1997 to MSMTA teachers, have been renamed by Bill McCormick, president of Jordan Kitt’s Music.
In doing this, Mr. McCormick said he wishes to honor Judy’s great generosity of spirit, and the kindness
she always displayed.
Ten members were selected to receive the $500 grant for 2003. The grants will be awarded at the MSMTA
Convention in Salisbury on November 2 during the General Membership Meeting. The awards are for
either student scholarship, or teacher development. Coincidentally, the awards for this year divided evenlyfive
for student’s needs and five for teachers. It is always a difficult decision to make, and teachers who did
not receive a grant are encouraged to try again. One reminder- a teacher may receive only one grant in a
five year period. Some requests were not considered because awards had previously been granted within
the preceding five years.
IN MEMORIAM . . .
It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the loss
of Judith Ferencz who passed away suddenly on
August 23 at her home in Carrol County following
cancer surgery. Judy served MSMTA for many
years, as VP for Publications, as President for two
terms, and she had recently accepted the position
of Publications Editor for another term. She also
served as president of the Carrol County Local
Association three times.
Her death leaves an enormous hole in the fabric
of MSMTA. She had friends in every profession,
it seemed, and could always find someone who
could help you, or someone from whom she could
ask advice on your behalf. Her many colleagues in
MSMTA, MTNA and the Eastern Division spoke
of her as a generous, giving, concerned, loving and
caring person. She was greatly respected personally
and professionally as a musician, and as a highly
skilled editor/publisher. But most of all, she was
beloved as a dear friend.
During her terms as MSMTA President, Judy was
most proud of the groundbreaking technological
work she did in proposing and helping to design
the MSMTA web site. Our site soon became the
model not only for other states, but for the MTNA
as well.
In 1997, Judy and Joselyn Makowski worked
with William McCormick, president of Jordan
Kitt’s Music Company, to create the yearly grants
offered to teachers across the state to be used to
benefit students or teachers. Mr. McCormick has
announced that in the future, these would be
known as the JUDITH FERENCZ AWARDS in
her honor.
In addition to her work for MSMTA, Judy was a
church organist and choir director at St. Matthew’s
United Church of Christ in Pleasant Valley. For
many years, she taught piano in the McDaniel
College Community Music Program in Westminster.
She also taught a course on “Women in Music” at
the college and performed regularly, both as soloist
and accompanist. She even made the costumes she
wore for the historical recitals.
Judy leaves her husband, Bill, two children, Rachael
and William, and two grandsons, Austin and
Marshall. She is also survived by a brother, Peter,
and sister, Michele. She will be greatly missed by
her many friends in MSMTA.
Condolences
Our deepest sympathy is extended to Faye Bonner and her family on the death of her daughter, Dr. Barbara Brewster
Bonner. She passed away on August 1 at her home in Upton, Massachusetts. Dr. Bonner was a veterinarian with a
specialty in turtles and worked to foster attention on the plight of Asian turtles facing extinction. Faye Bonner is an
active member of the Montgomery County MTA and currently co-chair of the Gertrude S. Brown Memorial Piano
Concerto Competition.
We also extend our condolences to Alta Thomann, whose husband Ronald passed away on September 15, after a long
and painful struggle with Parkinson’s. Alta has been an active member of the Howard County MTA for many years,
and we join her friends and colleagues in expressing our sympathy.
