A.22 Relay<br />

A.22.1 Definition<br />

A.22.1.1 EMPHASIS: Team competition, in a mass start <strong>for</strong>mat. In the relay event the<br />

runners in each relay team complete their individual segments sequentially. A<br />

relay team has two or more runners. Each runner completes a course as in an<br />

individual event.<br />

A.22.1.2 Championships<br />

A.22.2 Team Classes and Composition<br />

A.22.2.1 Teams shall consist of at least at least two (2) competitors.<br />

A.22.2.2 Teams shall be categorized by total points based on the orienteering age and<br />

gender of their members. The exact number of categories/points <strong>for</strong> a specific<br />

event shall be decided by the event organizers (see L.2.b.2 below).<br />

A.22.2.3 The point system and categories <strong>for</strong> a specific relay event, as decided upon by<br />

the event organizer(s) and approved by the sanctioning committee, must be<br />

announced 6 months be<strong>for</strong>e the race, preferably in the sanctioning application,<br />

and made available to all interested parties. If no such announcement is made,<br />

the point system and categories <strong>for</strong> that specific event revert to the defaults<br />

described below.<br />

A.22.2.4 In the event that no specific category/point system is established by the event<br />

organizers prior to the time limits set <strong>for</strong>th in rule L.2.b.2, the following default<br />

category/ point system is to be followed:<br />

o) Ages 17-20 or 35-49 receives 1 point<br />

p) Ages 15, 16 or 50-59 receives 2 points<br />

q) Under 15 years of age or 60 and older receives 3 points<br />

r) A female orienteer receives 2 points, in addition to any age points.<br />

s) Examples: 15-year old female = 4 points; 47 year old male = 1 point;<br />

t) 23 year old male = 0 points<br />

u) Team point categories are 4-point, 8-point, and 12-point.<br />

A.22.2.5 There shall be a minimum of two team categories in any relay event. Other<br />

categories may be added at the discretion of the event organizers.<br />

A.22.3 Championship Structure<br />

A.22.3.1 Teams shall consist of at least four (4) competitors <strong>for</strong> U.S. Relay<br />

Championship categories
