<strong>Monthly</strong> <strong>Progress</strong> <strong>Report</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>May</strong>, <strong>2010</strong><br />

<strong>Water</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Sanitation</strong> Improvement in In<strong>for</strong>mal Settlement through Gender<br />

Mainstreaming <strong>and</strong> Empowerment of Local Authorities<br />

UN‐HABITAT Watsan Team has been involved in developing the supplementary projects <strong>and</strong> submitted<br />

the proposal <strong>for</strong> TIKKA i Fund (Turkish Govt.), up scaling the present project to Quetta City (Baluchistan).<br />

In addition to this a series of meetings with UNICEF WES ii Team were carried out <strong>for</strong> development of<br />

joint proposals <strong>and</strong> it was decided to meet the relevant Govt. Line Departments at District Level<br />

(Rawalpindi), in order to know their priorities <strong>and</strong> thus reflecting their prioritized needs in the joint<br />

proposal. WHO iii was also involved in the process of Joint Proposal Development. UN‐HABITAT Watsan<br />

Team was also part of National <strong>Sanitation</strong> Action Plan developed <strong>for</strong> five years <strong>and</strong> stake holder analysis<br />

workshop <strong>for</strong> developing Behavior Change Communication Strategy at Provincial Level‐Punjab.<br />

Expression of Interest <strong>for</strong> Global <strong>Sanitation</strong> Fund <strong>for</strong> Country Programme Monitor as well as <strong>for</strong><br />

Executing Agency was also submitted. The detail of the activities carried out in each non <strong>for</strong>mal urban<br />

settlement is given below;<br />

Rawalpindi<br />

During the reporting month, the implementing partner’s project staff remained involved in carrying out<br />

different activities with community <strong>and</strong> stakeholder to encourage their participation <strong>and</strong> ownership in<br />

project activities. Community Councils have been established <strong>and</strong> structure of the Community Councils<br />

was finalized by involving all the stakeholders. The process of <strong>for</strong>mation of Community Councils in the<br />

four project localities was completed. During the discussions in the meetings the idea of reflect circle<br />

was shared with the communities <strong>and</strong> it was decided that the communities would be facilitated in the<br />

process of graduation <strong>for</strong> each reflect circle. It would enable each women interest group to translate<br />

their preferences in improving their livelihoods <strong>and</strong> to increase their earnings as well as using their<br />

savings in an effective <strong>and</strong> efficient manner. The<br />

implementing partner also participated in the “Clean<br />

Week” which was organized by the City Government,<br />

Rawalpindi. In coordination meeting with the Executive<br />

District Officer – Municipal Services, the request <strong>for</strong><br />

repairing of twelve QINGQI (vehicles provided by<br />

Rawalpindi Environment Improvement Project <strong>and</strong> a<br />

local NGO Alfalah Development Foundation to overcome<br />

the issue of waste management at UC level. These<br />

activities stepped <strong>for</strong>ward into Memor<strong>and</strong>um of<br />

Underst<strong>and</strong>ings (MoU) with WASA iv <strong>and</strong> Municipal<br />

Services Department – City District Government<br />

Rawalpindi. Executive District Officer – Municipal<br />

Services (EDO‐MS) <strong>and</strong> Director <strong>Sanitation</strong> WASA agreed to take up all the initiatives taken by the<br />

implementing partner under WASH project in future as well as they agreed to include Jhaggyan,<br />

Muhallah Farooqia <strong>and</strong> Quaidabad in their action planning in future. Two Community Led Total<br />

<strong>Sanitation</strong> (CLTS) Campaigns one in Jhaggyan <strong>and</strong> the other in Quaidabad. In addition to this thirty<br />

hygiene sessions have been organized <strong>for</strong> hundred <strong>and</strong> thirty boy <strong>and</strong> three hundred <strong>and</strong> eleven girl

students of Government Primary Schools. The discussion was carried out on roles <strong>and</strong> responsibilities of<br />

different entities in house hold unit.<br />

Islamabad<br />

WES Project in Faisal Colony entered in second phase in the<br />

month of <strong>May</strong>. Various processes were conducted to assess<br />

health <strong>and</strong> hygiene related behaviors (dem<strong>and</strong> creation).<br />

Different consultations were conducted with men, women<br />

<strong>and</strong> religious leaders to finalize the BCC v material. Versus<br />

from bible was included (as the target community is<br />

Christian Community) in the poster to be displayed in<br />

churches. Agreement by the implementing partner was<br />

signed with contractor <strong>for</strong> implementation of hardware<br />

related activities. Boring of five motorized pumps has been<br />

initiated. Almost all of them are at completion stage.<br />

Monitoring visits were paid by implementing partner<br />

including Community Development Facilitators <strong>and</strong> WES<br />

adviser. On self help basis 10‐15 houses appointed a lady to collect solid waste from these houses at the<br />

cost of Rs.20‐25 per month per household. Work <strong>for</strong> boring of water pumps is in process <strong>and</strong> all the<br />

streets are flooded with waste water, coming out of bores which is properly drain d through the side<br />

drains. It’s not possible to initiate any waste collection mechanism. Project committee is sensitizing<br />

households to dump waste in bins placed by CDA vi outside Faisal colony.<br />

Muzaffarabad<br />

During the reporting month one day gender mainstreaming training was conducted. WASH vii Development<br />

groups <strong>for</strong>med were three in number in the project area<br />

comprising of fifteen women <strong>and</strong> two men as members.<br />

Twenty four Wash Improvement Groups meeting were<br />

conducted having participation of three hundred <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong>ty<br />

women, six men <strong>and</strong> thirty four children. Community<br />

Management Skill Training was organized in camp‐2, where<br />

thirty three women <strong>and</strong> three men were amongst trainees.<br />

Field teams conducted five life skill sessions where eighty<br />

girls <strong>and</strong> twenty boys participated. A total of six Community<br />

Based Gender Mainstreaming Watsan Awareness <strong>and</strong><br />

Monitoring Sessions were conducted with the community in<br />

which <strong>for</strong>ty five women <strong>and</strong> fifteen children participated. On<br />

the other h<strong>and</strong> three meetings with influential stake holders<br />

were organized in the camps <strong>for</strong> smooth execution of project activities; six Gender mainstreaming school<br />

awareness sessions <strong>and</strong> three gender mainstreaming <strong>and</strong> student related WASH activities were also<br />

conducted in the Camp area. Awareness raising sessions were conducted i.e., seventeen sessions on safe<br />

water, five on sanitation <strong>and</strong> three on safe personal hygiene in the camps. Project Management Committee<br />

meeting was held at Children First Islamabad office during current month. BCC Specialist UN‐HABITAT also<br />

visited Muzaffarabad along with consultants <strong>for</strong> the development of IEC viii / BCC material.

Hyderabad<br />

Three Community Organizations (COs) were <strong>for</strong>med, <strong>for</strong> capacity building of community organizations in<br />

the context of Watsan, the implementing partner<br />

organized one day training workshop <strong>for</strong> CO capacity<br />

building, the training was designed on the basic concepts<br />

of organization, structure of CO, roles <strong>and</strong> responsibilities<br />

of office bearers i.e president, secretary, treasurer <strong>and</strong><br />

other members of CO. Twenty five participants from<br />

targeted in<strong>for</strong>mal settlements attended the training<br />

workshop <strong>and</strong> active participants were women in the<br />

training covering the focused gender mainstreaming.<br />

Project engineer with support of PHED ix engineers <strong>and</strong><br />

TOIS (TMA x ) prepared rehabilitation/improvement plans<br />

of Thakar Colony, Ghera Colony <strong>and</strong> Sheedi Goth. Sheedi Goth plan was approved by District<br />

Coordination Officer (DCO) Hyderabad <strong>and</strong> MD xi WASA assured <strong>for</strong> the implementation of work in the<br />

mid June. In Thakar Colony the activity of de siltation <strong>and</strong> rehabilitation of the main holes of sewerage<br />

lines was carried out. The activity was completed with the support of community volunteers <strong>and</strong><br />

sanitary workers.<br />

During the reporting month, twelve mobilization <strong>and</strong> sensitization sessions with the active participation<br />

of hundred <strong>and</strong> seventy four women were conducted. In<br />

addition to this eleven hygiene sessions were also<br />

conducted. These sessions were participated by more<br />

than three hundred. Hygiene Promoters Staff (Female) of<br />

the implementing partner organized seven training<br />

sessions in three settlements, detailed as three training<br />

sessions in Sheedi Goth where more than seventy<br />

girls/women were benefitted. The implementing partner<br />

also carried out <strong>Sanitation</strong> Mapping through five PRA xii<br />

sessions. In addition to this eleven sensitization sessions<br />

with school children at Rais Khan Mohammad Primary<br />

<strong>and</strong> High School near Thakar Colony (class 1 to 10<br />

including girls) where total three hundred <strong>and</strong> twenty five students were sensitized on hygiene<br />

promotion. Children Clubs were also <strong>for</strong>med in these schools.<br />
