CESSNOCK
WATER SUPPLY
UPGRADE
proposed new
Reservoir and
lead-in main
HUNTER WATER is investing
in water infrastructure
in cessnock to cater for
growth and to improve
water security and
reliability.
this fact sheet provides an
important update about a
key project happening in
your local area.
Hunter Water is embarking on a four-stage
upgrade of the water supply system within the
Kurri Kurri and Cessnock area.
WHAT WILL THE WORKS INVOLVE
A component of the water supply upgrade
involves construction of a new 5 megalitre
reservoir located off Mount View Road, West
Cessnock (as shown overleaf).
It will also include an underground pipeline from
the reservoir, along Mount View Road to a new
water pump station and then through Cessnock,
connecting into an existing watermain at the
corner of Maitland Road and David Street.
Construction of the pipeline and the reservoir
is expected to begin in mid 2011 and be
completed by late 2012.
BENEFITS TO THE CESSNOCK
COMMUNITY
The current Cessnock water supply system
has limited storage capacity in the event
the system is offline for any reason. Some
residents of Cessnock also experience low
water pressure in peak demand periods.
The Cessnock water supply upgrade will
address these current issues and provide
additional capacity for future growth.
HOW DID WE CHOOSE THIS SITE
In May 2009, Hunter Water established a
Community Working Group to help determine
a preferred reservoir site.
The criteria not only considered the traditional
environmental and construction requirements
associated with the project, but also took into
consideration the social impacts of the proposal.
The working group met periodically between
August 2009 and October 2010 to discuss the
project objectives, identify key issues, develop
and test a multi-criteria analysis to analyse
and evaluate the reservoir siting options, and
discuss the findings.
All documentation derived from this process is
available on the Hunter Water website.
ENVIRONMENTAL & VISUAL IMPACTS
Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) is preparing a
Review of Environmental Factors (REF) on
behalf of Hunter Water to assess the potential
environmental impacts of the proposal. An
independent visualisation impact study has
also been undertaken. A landscaping plan will
be developed to minimise these impacts.
Community members will have the opportunity
to make comment and provide feedback on
the project when the REF is placed on public
exhibition in early 2011.
WHO WILL BE IMPACTED
There will be increased traffic movements
along Mount View Road during the
construction of the pipeline and reservoir. A
traffic management plan will be in place to
direct traffic safely through the area.
Some residents may also experience an
increase in noise, dust and vibration during
construction. Efforts will be made to minimise
these impacts. Notifications will be sent to
affected residents when these periods are likely.
