reliability.<br />

your local area.<br />

<strong>Hunter</strong> <strong>Water</strong> is embarking on a four-stage<br />

upgrade of the water supply system within the<br />

Kurri Kurri and <strong>Cessnock</strong> area.<br />

WHAT WILL THE WORKS INVOLVE<br />

A component of the water supply upgrade<br />

involves construction of a new 5 megalitre<br />

reservoir located off Mount View Road, West<br />

<strong>Cessnock</strong> (as shown overleaf).<br />

It will also include an underground pipeline from<br />

the reservoir, along Mount View Road to a new<br />

water pump station and then through <strong>Cessnock</strong>,<br />

connecting into an existing watermain at the<br />

corner of Maitland Road and David Street.<br />

Construction of the pipeline and the reservoir<br />

is expected to begin in mid 2011 and be<br />

completed by late 2012.<br />

BENEFITS TO THE CESSNOCK<br />

COMMUNITY<br />

The current <strong>Cessnock</strong> water supply system<br />

has limited storage capacity in the event<br />

the system is offline for any reason. Some<br />

residents of <strong>Cessnock</strong> also experience low<br />

water pressure in peak demand periods.<br />

The <strong>Cessnock</strong> water supply upgrade will<br />

address these current issues and provide<br />

additional capacity for future growth.<br />

HOW DID WE CHOOSE THIS SITE<br />

In May 2009, <strong>Hunter</strong> <strong>Water</strong> established a<br />

Community Working Group to help determine<br />

a preferred reservoir site.<br />

The criteria not only considered the traditional<br />

environmental and construction requirements<br />

associated with the project, but also took into<br />

consideration the social impacts of the proposal.<br />

The working group met periodically between<br />

August 2009 and October 2010 to discuss the<br />

project objectives, identify key issues, develop<br />

and test a multi-criteria analysis to analyse<br />

and evaluate the reservoir siting options, and<br />

discuss the findings.<br />

All documentation derived from this process is<br />

available on the <strong>Hunter</strong> <strong>Water</strong> website.<br />

ENVIRONMENTAL & VISUAL IMPACTS<br />

Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) is preparing a<br />

Review of Environmental Factors (REF) on<br />

behalf of <strong>Hunter</strong> <strong>Water</strong> to assess the potential<br />

environmental impacts of the proposal. An<br />

independent visualisation impact study has<br />

also been undertaken. A landscaping plan will<br />

be developed to minimise these impacts.<br />

Community members will have the opportunity<br />

to make comment and provide feedback on<br />

the project when the REF is placed on public<br />

exhibition in early 2011.<br />

WHO WILL BE IMPACTED<br />

There will be increased traffic movements<br />

along Mount View Road during the<br />

construction of the pipeline and reservoir. A<br />

traffic management plan will be in place to<br />

direct traffic safely through the area.<br />

Some residents may also experience an<br />

increase in noise, dust and vibration during<br />

construction. Efforts will be made to minimise<br />

these impacts. Notifications will be sent to<br />

affected residents when these periods are likely.<br />
