nly a short time ago, God WAS<br />
still generally conceived as existing<br />
outside the universe. It was believed<br />
that from there He arbitrarily and<br />
miraculously created all things as they<br />
are. For example, because our eyes and ears serve<br />
special functions, it was assumed that they were<br />
deliberately designed that way for their use. The<br />
notion of design gave rise to a designer, and God<br />
was thought of as creating spontaneously all things<br />
in the universe as we experience them.<br />
It was not until the 19 th century that the<br />
doctrine of the evolutionary development of<br />
organic matter was proclaimed. This doctrine<br />
expounded that the fundamental creation was<br />
a matrix of natural forces and laws. In effect,<br />
this meant that God did not create things to<br />
be as they appear to us, but rather that the<br />
