HE Sufi mystic Abu Hamid<br />
MUHAMMAD al-Ghazali (1058-<br />
1111), stands out as a beacon among the<br />
world’s most illustrious philosophers<br />
and mystics. He attained a thorough<br />
grasp of Neoplatonism, equalled its learned<br />
exponents and surpassed them by delving into<br />
the profundities which they neglected. His Sufi<br />
method of interpreting symbols was adopted by<br />
Sigmund Freud over 800 years later.<br />
Considering the state the world finds itself in at<br />
the moment, it is interesting to read the thoughts<br />
of a Muslim mystic of the 11 th century from a time<br />
of great change in Eurasia when the old order was<br />
disintegrating. This led to many smaller states<br />
emerging, each of whom vied with the others in<br />
