Doctoral candidate Nichol Schultz was<br />

named the 2012 American Association <strong>of</strong><br />

Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Foundation<br />

Past Presidents’ Research Fellow at the<br />

AAEP meeting on December 3. The $5,000<br />

grant is awarded each year to a doctoral or<br />

residency student who has made significant<br />

progress in the field <strong>of</strong> equine health<br />

care research. Nichol’s thesis project is<br />

focused on the epidemiology and genetic<br />

basis <strong>of</strong> equine metabolic syndrome. Her<br />

advisors are Drs. Molly McCue and Jim<br />

Mickelson. Past winners <strong>of</strong> the AAEP Past<br />

Presidents’ Research Fellow award include<br />

Dr. Annette McCoy (2011), and Dr.<br />

Carrie Finno (2010).<br />

Katie Anderson, class <strong>of</strong> 2015, was<br />

chosen from a group <strong>of</strong> 250 applicants to<br />

receive one <strong>of</strong> 68 Howard Hughes Medical<br />

Institute (HHMI)-Burroughs Welcome<br />

Fund research fellowships. The one-year<br />

award for full-time research will allow<br />

Anderson to attend the National Institutes<br />

<strong>of</strong> Health/Merial Veterinary Scholars<br />

Symposium under the sponsorship <strong>of</strong><br />

the Burroughs Wellcome Fund in 2014.<br />

She will also attend the Medical Fellows<br />

end-<strong>of</strong>-year scientific meeting at HHMI<br />

headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland,<br />

and have the opportunity to participate in<br />

Medical Fellows regional group events<br />

and attend an HHMI science meeting<br />

with HHMI investigators. Anderson was a<br />

2012 <strong>Summer</strong> Scholar, working with Dr.<br />

Jaime Modiano on the project “The Role<br />

<strong>of</strong> IL-8 in Hemangiosarcoma Growth and<br />

Differentiation.”<br />

Veterinary Impact,” will<br />

also feature a website<br />

and series <strong>of</strong> posters.<br />

The American <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> Veterinary<br />

Surgeons has awarded a Surgeon-in-<br />

Training Research Grant to Dr. Dane<br />

Tatarniuk, a first-year resident in large<br />

animal surgery and master’s student in the<br />

veterinary medicine graduate program, for<br />

the project “Concentrations <strong>of</strong> Cytokines<br />

and Matrix Metalloproteinases in Serum<br />

and Synovial Fluid Following Injection<br />

<strong>of</strong> Autologous Conditioned Serum into<br />

Equine Osteoarthritic Distal Inter-Phalangeal<br />

Joints.” Tatarniuk is working on the project<br />

with Dr. Troy Trumble, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor.<br />

(AASV) Foundation<br />

awarded scholarships<br />

totaling $25,000 to 15<br />

veterinary students during<br />

Sam Holst the 44th AASV Annual<br />

Meeting in San Diego<br />

in March. The recipients included four<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> students: Anne<br />

Duquette and Sam<br />

Holst, who received<br />

$1,500 scholarships,<br />

and Jacob Schwartz<br />

and Katherine<br />

Wedel, who received<br />

$500 scholarships.<br />
