June 2011 Benefit of the Month —
The SC Retirement System (SCRS)
Thomas Alva Edison once said
“Good fortune is what happens
when opportunity meets with planning”.
Many of us dream about what
we will do when we retire and no
longer have to work. Maybe you
want to travel the world, spend
some quality time with the family,
or maybe you want to give
back to your community in some
capacity. The possibilities seem
endless! But when you start
putting dollar signs to your
dreams, they might seem out of
your reach.
The Benefit of the Month for
June is our SC Retirement System
(SCRS). As a member of the
SCRS, you are planning for your
good fortune by contributing
6.5% of each paycheck towards
your retirement. The Medical
Center chips in an additional
13.29% — more than double!!
After twenty eight (28) years of
earned service, you could receive
a pension as much as 50% of
your final year of income. There
is also an early retirement option
available to you at age 55 with
twenty five (25) years of earned
service credit or age 60, with five
(5) years of earned service.
Our Benefits Department can
assist you with questions concerning
your retirement, including
pension estimates and figuring
your years of service. We are
Updated General Emergency Information Cards
(“Green Cards”)
Believe it or not, the time to
think about hurricane preparation
is officially upon us. The
2011 Hurricane Season began on
June 1st, and will run through
November 30th.
After an unusually quiet 2010
season, the National Oceanic
And Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) has predicted a
very active one this year for the
Atlantic Coast. Of the 12 to 18
named storms expected, 6 to 10
of them could become hurricanes
(winds of 74 mph or higher),
including 3 to 6 major hurricanes
(defined as “Category 3, 4 or 5;
winds of 111 mph or higher”).
For those of us living and working
in the Charleston area, we
take all of this in stride.
As employees of MUHA, we
have an obligation to be prepared
for severe weather emer-
gencies— not only for ourselves,
but for our patients.
The General Emergency Information
Cards (“Green Cards”)
have been updated with the
current dial-in numbers for General
Information, as well as department-specific
information.
“Green Cards” may be picked up
in Room 201, Main Hospital.
Hurricane Hugo caused 56 fatalities,
left nearly 100,000 homeless, and
resulted in over $10 billion dollars in
damage, making it the most damaging
hurricane ever recorded at that particular
time.
Communication Slip for Separating Employees
The “Communication Slip for Separating
Employees” is a tool that has been developed
for both employees and the departments
that they are leaving. The form provides
employees with a checklist of items to
complete before they transfer to another
department, transfer to another MUSC entity,
or leave the organization completely.
In addition, it provides the department with
accurate information that they need to properly
complete the Separation Notice. Employees
who are separating employment
from MUHA will need to complete a brief
exit process in HR, Information regarding
retirement plans/funds, health insurance
June Standard of Behavior
coverage and COBRA options will be reviewed.
The Communication Slip for Separating
Employees Form has recently been revised
to include a section for the employee’s forwarding
address so that any important post–
separation paperwork is sent to the correct
address.
A link has been added on the HR Website
that will take you directly to the Communication
Slip. If you have any questions about
this process, please do not hesitate to contact
the Benefits Department at 792-0826.
“The Communication Slip for
Separating Employees provides the
Department with accurate information
to properly complete the Separation
Notice”
What could you do with an extra 45 minutes
to an hour in each day If you’re anything
like me, A-L-O-T. Whether you are in traffic
waiting on a red light, or waiting on your
cappuccino from Starbucks, you will spend
approximately 45-62 minutes EACH DAY
waiting for something.
This month’s Standard of Behavior is to
“Acknowledge and respond to e-mail, voice
mail and other forms of communication in a
professional and timely manner”. Some days,
this may not seem so easy. But what you
need to remember is to put yourself in the
position of the person on the other end of
that phone line. Be as respectful of their
time as you would want someone to be of
yours. Take their information and call them
back if you anticipate being longer than a
minute or two.
And what about those emails Is your inbox
out of control Outlook has many features
that may help you — from color coding
emails (for example, green could equate to
money), setting follow up reminders, or filtering
out junk email — resources are available
to help you improve your response time
and make your work flow more efficiently.
Want more information about the different
features in the Microsoft Outlook email
program Contact the OCIO Support Desk
at 792-9700.

Employee Review Deadline
The Deadline for Employees to complete
their self-review was May 31st. At that
point in time, the system automatically
moved it on to the manager. If you completed
it and sent it on, kudos! It was a
tough job to complete all of that information.
Some of you may have been a little
busy...meaning to do it, but caught up in the
daily grind. Do you need a little more time
Managers can give their employees more
time to complete the Employee Self Review
by using the button below:
Employees will then
be able to access the
form from the Supervisor
Review step on
the Home Page, or
from the Performance
tab.
Uh Oh...Did you run
out of time with your
Self-Review You can
turn back the Clock!
When the employee is
ready to send it back
to their supervisor, he or she will click the
same button to return the form.
