Blue Print News...
Spring into action with
Blue Print Coil Springs
From February 2011 over 400 coil springs for
Japanese, Korean and American vehicles will
be available from stock.
Blue Print coil springs are not just OE quality they
are also OE specification with every spring
specifically designed to be an exact replacement
for the original part. The use of ‘generic’
aftermarket springs can compromise the ride,
handling and safety of a vehicle – so ask
your distributor for Blue Print to give your
customer original quality and specification at
aftermarket prices.
Blue Print brake pads –
Now up to 50% cheaper
We have reduced our trade price on over 40 popular
Blue Print brake pad part numbers.
This ensures they stay competitive against both the main
dealer and aftermarket competitors – without cutting our
product quality.
The next time you need brake
pads for a Japanese, Korean
or American vehicle, ask
your factor to supply
Blue Print – for the
quality you trust at a
price to compete.
Blue Print for Repairers website
gets a revamp
Coming soon in 2011 is the updated and improved
Blue Print for Repairers website.
The website, which was first launched in 2009, has received
tens of thousands of hits from independent garages.
It contains links to important industry information,
business information, a comprehensive technical library,
access to Blue Print LIVE! - the
including Water Pumps
When changing a timing belt it is good practice to also change the water pump.
ADL has introduced a short range of complete kits that
include both the timing belt and water pump as a
single Blue Print part number. This not only makes the
repair more economical but is also good preventative
maintenance. Overlooking a cam belt driven water
pump could potentially be disastrous, as the pump
would have received the same amount of usage as the
other parts being replaced.
Hybrid vehicles have been around for over a decade. With evermore stringent emission
regulations, tax breaks for ‘greener’ vehicles and the increasing culture of environmental
responsibility from businesses and consumers alike, the popularity and use of Hybrid systems
only looks set to increase.
Hybrid Technology is the principle of using two power sources to drive a vehicle. There are basically three
types of Hybrid system: Series Hybrid, Parallel Hybrid and Series Parallel.
The most common Hybrid vehicle on the road, the Toyota Prius, uses the Series Parallel system, and more
and more manufacturers are adopting it for use in their vehicles.
It was 1997 when the first Prius hit the roads in Japan, and yet, over a decade on, the vast majority of
Hybrid vehicles are still being serviced by main dealers. With voltages in excess of 500 Volts throughout
the power train, it is no wonder that many independent technicians are reluctant to work on
these vehicles.
In the diagram to the right you will see there are three
MG1 - Starter + Charger
main boxes. These are the engine, MG1 and MG2.
MG2 - Motor + Regenerative Brake
The engine needs no explanation; MG stands for
Motor/Generator. The main points to bear in mind with both of
the MG units are, if we supply electricity to either of these they
will rotate as driven motors. Equally if we supply torque to these
items as they are driven, they will generate electricity.
MG1 – When acting as a motor it performs the roll of a starter
motor on a conventional vehicle. When it performs its
roll as a generator, it is the engine driven generator.
MG2 – When acting as a motor it physically provides torque to the driven road wheels through a drive
chain. When it acts as a generator it acts as a brake to the driven wheels – converting torque
into electricity.
Hybrid vehicles are becoming more and more common on the UK’s roads and represent a real
opportunity for technicians who know how to service and maintain these vehicles.
Both Hybrid and fully electric vehicles, and
now some conventional vehicles employ
regenerative braking systems.
What is Regenerative Braking
Regenerative braking uses the principal of capturing
the energy lost during braking to re-charge the
vehicle’s battery.
How does it work
Blue Print now offers a choice of two
Hybrid Technology courses which will
facilitate a good understanding of Hybrid
system operating principles, enabling all
technicians to conduct safe, routine
maintenance and servicing.
The one day course is an introduction to Hybrid
systems which effectively combines classroom
theory and tuition, with hands on practical
demonstrations on a Hybrid vehicle.
The NEW two day course expands on these
important elements and is an IMI approved
QCF Level 2 qualification in the discipline.
Courses will be held at venues across the UK
throughout 2011 and can in some instances
even be conducted at your premises.
Pressing the brake pedal
tells the vehicle’s ECU that
you wish to decelerate;
the ECU will then slow
the vehicle in two ways:
n The first is for the vehicle’s electric motor to be
converted into a generator. As the electric motor
is mechanically connected to the driven wheels the
application of torque will cause the driven wheels
and therefore the vehicle, to slow. The conversion
of the motor into a generator charges the vehicle’s
battery at the same time, meaning the vehicle can
generate electricity without burning fuel, thus
improving fuel economy.
n At the same time the vehicle’s ECU will calculate
the difference between the rate of deceleration
desired by the driver and the rate of deceleration
generated through regenerative braking. The
difference in force will then be applied via the
vehicle’s conventional braking system.
This system is especially effective in Hybrids and
electric vehicles during ‘stop-start’ driving conditions.
The more electricity that can be generated for free,
the more power it has to run on the electric motor.
Servicing braking systems on Hybrid vehicles
requires specific knowledge, which is exactly
what Blue Print’s Hybrid Technology courses
will arm you with.
