Ronald McDonald House 

Currently, there are few overnight options or opportunities for daily respite 

for families of seriously ill children who must receive hospital treatment. 

The idea behind the Evansville Ronald McDonald House is simple: provide 

a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children receiving 

treatment in the community. The Ronald McDonald House is unique and 

will offer a better quality of life for hospitalized children and their families. 

Family members can eat, sleep, relax, and find support from other families 

in similar situations. Since inception of the first Ronald McDonald House 

in 1974, more than 10 million families around the world have benefited 

from the comfort provided by a Ronald McDonald House. Families from 

the region who come to Evansville for their rehabilitaion will now be 

served by this mission.

New Foundation Board Chair has 

first hand experience with St. Mary’s 

Mike and Brenda Riley know the value of quality health care. They have 

far more experience with physicians and nurses than most people will have 

in their lifetimes. After being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in March of 

1997, Brenda has spent a lot of time at St. Mary’s. One hospitalization in 

the Spring of 2008 lasted several weeks. 

That type of experience gives the St. Mary’s Foundation new Board Chair 

first hand knowledge about the needs of the patient.

“These have been very difficult times for our family,” said Mike. “But we 

have also been blessed with a lot of loving, caring and prayerful people.” 

He said the spirituality of St. Mary’s staff was evident during their most 

recent stay. “I had a nurse from a different unit that we had previously 

stayed on recognize me in the cafeteria. She came up to the room later just 

to see how Brenda was doing. That’s not just talking the talk, that’s walking 

the walk. She checked on us just because she cared. St. Mary’s has some 

very special people working there.” 

Mike said he has family members who work in health care in large 

metropolitan areas, and “they couldn’t believe what an outstanding Surgical 

Trauma Intensive Care Unit unit you have there. The staff that treated us 

was not just professional, but they were spiritual as well. We didn’t just 

experience quality, we experienced compassion.” 

That’s why Mike’s leadership of the Foundation Board carries special 

meaning. 

“St. Mary’s is such a wonderful place to make a difference,” he said. “It’s 

where generosity can have an impact on people when they are most 

vulnerable.”

You have the capacity 

to change people’s lives 

Children, babies are served… 

Your gift to St. Mary’s Center for Children helps bring specialized services 

to the local community. Thousands have been served by the Center. 

Families would otherwise have to travel long distances to find specialists to 

serve their children. St. Mary’s newborn intensive care unit has pioneered 

treatments as a center of excellence. Thousands of children are served 

each year by the Mobile Dental Clinic. Services in these areas have been 

dramatically expanded because of contributions to the Foundation. 

Families were helped 

Some people contribute directly to services that treat cancer, heart, diabetes 

and mental health. The dollars have been used to subsidize equipment 

and education. Last year, 36 departments received help from St. Mary’s 

Foundation thanks to the generosity of donors. 

Contributions served the “chronologically advantaged.” 

Contributions have helped St. Mary’s serve the aging population with 

some unique services, including St. Mary’s PrimeWise. PrimeWise offers 

classes that serve mind, body and spirit, and there are two St. Mary’s days 

dedicated to celebrating the natural aging process. St Mary’s also has an 

outstanding Rehabilitation Institute that serves thousands each year. 

Where there’s a will, there’s a way… 

A will or final estate should reflect generosity. This is no better way to 

support an important mission, than when a person no longer needs money 

or possessions. Some gifts can have tax implications, or even produce an

The Center for Children gives families “local” access to leading specialists 

in their fields, close to home, without adding the burden of missed work 

or expensive trips to out of town hospitals. The Center provides services 

from neurodevelopment to child psychology, to a Resource Center and 

support groups. The Center for Children was the first subspecialty clinic 

in the area and utilizes physicians from hospitals all over the region. 

Developmental testing is also available through our Healthy Steps 

program. 

The School Community Council, in collaboration with the St. Mary’s 

Medical Center, ECHO Community Health Care and Vanderburgh 

County Department of Health offers free school physicals and 

immunizations for uninsured K-12 students. 

The Newborn Intensive Care Unit has served over 13,500 babies as 

it celebrates its 31st anniversary. It continues to pioneer treatments 

for premature babies and it is the highest level NICU in the area. The 

Neonatal transport team has 31 years of experience and a neonatologist is 

in the hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit has a board certified Pediatric 

Intensivist on staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week and experienced 

nurses who are certified in Trauma and Pediatric Advanced Lifesaving 

(PALS). 

Area’s only CARF Accredited Acute Inpatient Pediatric Rehabilitation 

Program. 

The Pediatric Intensive Feeding Program and Assessment clinic is the 

only one of its kind in this area. Lead by a Clinical Pediatric Psychologist 

with specialty feeding experience, a team comprised of speech therapists, 

occupational therapists, and dietitians allow children with feeding 

disorders to receive care close to home with clinical experts in the field. 

■ ■ St. Mary’s Pediatric Clinic treats children from birth to 18 and is available 

for well child exams and sick visits.

Our Tears to Toys program is a unique way to help alleviate the fears 

of pediatric patients when having inpatient and outpatient procedures. 

Distressed children are given a small plush toy to embrace for comfort. 

Since 2002, almost 25,000 plush toys have been distributed.

People diagnosed with chronic illness can depend on St. Mary’s to give 

them the most advanced treatments and technology available, along with 

the most dedicated and compassionate healthcare professionals in the 

region. When it comes to cancer and heart disease, St. Mary’s offers: 

Cancer 

■■ St. Mary’s was the first with digital mammography and tomotherapy in 

the region. We believe that healing goes beyond physical care, which is 

why we work with the spiritual and psychosocial needs of people living 

with cancer and survivors. At the Hope Resource Center, the latest in 

educational information is available on the diagnosis, treatment, and 

even prevention of cancer. 

■■ The underserved and economically disadvantaged are served by the 

Hope Resource Center and St. Mary’s Breast Center with the Sharing 

the Vision and The Power of Hope programs. These efforts are life 

saving, early detection programs that include breast cancer screenings 

for low income, rural, and minority populations in six southwestern 

Indiana counties.

The Retreat of Hope is a spiritual retreat for women living with 

breast cancer and survivors. It is a year-long program designed to 

complement traditional medical treatments. The Retreat of Hope is a 

celebration of life. It enables women to experience a lasting reduction 

in distress, improve quality of life to reach a deeper sense of purpose 

and meaning in life, and to experience a greater sense of well-being. 

Several areas of generosity support this effort, which helps give women 

control over their reaction to living with cancer, and it places focus on 

the body, as well as the mind and spirit. 

Cardiology 

■ ■ 

Success Not Failure, a heart failure support group, is for those who 

have been diagnosed with heart failure and their families to provide 

educational and emotional support. These meetings are free of charge 

and open to the public. All classes are held at St. Mary’s Heart Institute 

at 3700 Washington Avenue. For more information or to register to

■■ St. Mary’s Foundation funded a professional cardiovascular educational 

program for nearly 200 physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses in 

March 2008. 


Hope offers community, 

meaningful relationships! 

In 1999, Cleta Garrett came to the Hope Resource Center 

looking for a support group. What she found was an extended 

family. 

“I wish more people knew how many services are available for 

people living with cancer,” said Ms. Garrett, “I can’t imagine a 

more caring environment.” 

Garrett was diagnosed with breast cancer December 30, 1998, 

and moved to Evansville six weeks later to be closer to family. 

“My initial reaction to the diagnosis was that my life was 

over. I was devastated. Hope Resource Center and the people 

I met here were a Godsend for me” says Cleta. She was soon invited 

to participate in St. Mary’s HOPE Resource Center’s Retreat of 

Hope, which is a gathering for women living with breast cancer. On 

retreat, Cleta continued her celebration of life with others who are 

courageously battling breast cancer. “It’s such a blessing to be a part 

of the camaraderie. We all have so much in common and so much to 

talk about,” said Cleta. Also, while at the retreat, she developed lasting 

and meaningful relationships with other people living with cancer. 

Cleta began attending many of the HOPE programs, such as speaker 

presentations, educational lunches, massages, and drumming circles. 

Her experience at Hope Resource Center and her passion for helping 

others in the community also lead her to become a faithful and 

dedicated volunteer. 

In 2003, Cleta began assisting with St. Mary’s “Sharing the 

Vision,” program, which provides mammogram screenings, 

diagnosis, education and support services to women in six 

southwestern Indiana counties. Cleta said “Helping with Sharing 

the Vision is an opportunity for me to help others, something 

that I can do that is worthwhile. It gives me the chance to show 

others the compassion that was shown to me when I first came 

to the HOPE Resource Center. For me cancer wasn’t the end of 

my life. Time has shown me the blessings that have come from my 

struggle. I’ve met wonderful people and now have the privilege of 

giving back.” 

Cleta has a contagious passion for helping others in need with the 

HOPE Resource Center. She praises HOPE’s friendly and accepting 

staff, and helps extend the companionship offered by HOPE, not just 

for herself, but for all survivors and their families.

St. Mary’s has a powerful presence in our community. Without the 

outreach work of St. Mary’s, many families would have little or no options 

for their health or dental care. Some of the many outreach activities that 

St. Mary’s participates in include: 

■ ■ Outreach Services has formed powerful allies with local organizations to 

bring education and resources to the vulnerable in our community. Two 

full-time employees are in the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation (a 

respiratory therapist & dietician) and over 65,000 children receive education 

on a variety of topics, including diabetes nutrition. 

■■ 

The Mobile Dental Clinic fills a critical need for the children of Vanderburgh 

County and its surrounding counties. Since its inception, the Mobile Dental 

Clinic as served over 7,500 children and completed over 47,000 procedures. 

■■ 

Healthy Kids-Healthier Communities is a pioneering program that provides 

education for low income children and their families on proper dental care. 

The program is also available to the Hispanic community and utilizes an 

interpreter. 

■ ■ St. Mary’s Child Passenger Protection Program is a pioneering program that 

educates children and their families about the need for seat belts and child 

safety seats, as well as their proper installation. It also provides some car seats 

for low income families. Statistics show that 82% of car seats are installed 

incorrectly. 

■■ St. Mary’s Hospital for Women & Children and Kohl’s Department Stores 

have partnered for the health of children through the Keep Kids Safe 

Program. Keep Kids Safe is a program to increase awareness and provide 

education to children, parents, and caregivers on childhood injuries caused by 

bicycle crashes and helmet education.

St. Mary’s supports many community agencies/activities, such as Nota-Gona- 

Wheeze Asthma Camps for children during spring break. Some of these 

sponsorships include: The Back To School Blitz, Lights on After School, 

Professor Popcorn, Baby Think it Over, SafeSitter Classes, CPR/1st Aid, 

nutrition education, parent and child health fairs and assessments.

■■ Magnet recognition is the gold standard in nursing excellence. 

This journey is the pinnacle of recognition for quality patient care. 

St. Mary’s is diligently working toward this designation. 

■■ While St. Mary’s is still young in this journey, the positive results are 

already affirming what other Magnet hospitals already know. This 

experience creates better support for clinical decision making, greater 

access to information and resources, and creates more collaborative 

and collegial relationships between nurses and physicians. In addition,

■■ Ongoing education is an intricate part of Magnet program, so 

St. Mary’s Foundation, St. Mary’s Auxiliary, and the family of Sue 

Conner Vauthier, have made nursing education a priority. The Sue 

Conner Vauthier Memorial Scholarships and the St. Mary’s Auxiliary 

Scholarships were awarded in May, 2008. The Sue Conner Vauthier 

Memorial Scholarships were established to support St. Mary’s employed 

nurses who desire to continue their education or advanced degrees in 

nursing. This scholarship fund was created by Sue’s family to honor 

her memory. Sue served and cared for patients in St. Mary’s ministry 

from 1978 to 1996. St. Mary’s Auxiliary scholarships are based on their 

GPA, activities, leadership, and an hour-long interview, among other 

criteria. In addition, nursing education is ongoing throughout the year. 

St. Mary’s commitment to funding nursing education is evident through the 

over $200,000 in nursing education dollars allocated over the last 3 years.

Families Experience 

St. Mary’s Mission 

It was a tragic weekend for a family already in crisis. They were living 

out of their car and just passing through Evansville when a car accident 

brought them to St. Mary’s emergency room. A husband with a pregnant 

wife and five children under the age of six…Despite the hot and humid 

summer day, they were dressed in winter clothing. 

As the injured mother was taken to labor and delivery, St. Mary’s staff 

began living out their mission. 

Working with scared and anxious people is a full time job in the ER. The 

staff collected money, some from personal contributions, to purchase 

summer clothing for the children. At the same time, nurses in the labor 

and delivery unit were notified and went to work. First, they received 

permission to bathe the five children. They washed their clothes, brushed 

their teeth, and purchased them dinner. All this while mom received care. 

Afterwards, the three youngest children were rocked to sleep.

“No one in the emergency room or the labor and delivery room thought 

they were doing anything special. This is just what we do,” said Jenny 

Brewer, RN, Director of Labor and Delivery. “I think the staff here is 

amazing. It warms my heart and makes me so proud to work with this 

group. I didn’t even hear about this happening until several days after the 

weekend.”

These are just a few of things you can expect from a St. Mary’s Volunteer. 

They can be seen throughout the hospital daily. Their mission is to make

Last year over 475 volunteers gave 40,000 hours of service to the patients 

and employees. St. Mary’s has volunteers of all ages! Teenagers and college 

students join more “experienced” people to form a diverse age culture of 

service. 

St. Mary’s Auxiliary 

The men and women of the St. Mary’s Auxiliary go above and beyond the 

call of service by providing financial support for the special needs of the 

hospital. Throughout the year the Auxiliary presents special fundraisers and 

events. Coupled with the proceeds from the exceptional St. Mary’s Gift 

Shoppe, the Auxillary provides over $100,000 annually to the Foundation. 

The camaraderie of the group is celebrated at events such as the Annual 

Mass and Breakfast with the Bishop, the traditional Christmas Tea, and the

Pioneering services for people 

living with bipolar disorder 

The first bipolar education symposium, Understanding 

Bipolar Disorder: Recognition, Diagnosis, and 

Treatment, was held on October 25, 2007. Over 300 

professionals and people living with bipolar disorder 

attended. The second regional conference will be 

held in the Spring of 2009.

living with bipolar disorder 

People living with bipolar disorder have a serious but treatable condition. 

Getting early diagnosis and specific treatments can be very difficult, 

especially with children. Thanks to an extraordinary act of generosity, 

St. Mary’s is providing opportunities for education, networking and 

services for people living with bipolar disorder. 

Twenty percent of St. Mary’s inpatient mental health services suffer from 

bipolar disorder. In addition, approximately ten percent of the children 

utilizing the children’s psychologist and psychiatrist services in the 

St. Mary’s Center for Children are exhibiting symptoms of bipolar disorder. 

St. Mary’s is home to the Edwina Kempf Bipolar Wellness Center and is 

currently offering the following services:

Joint effort with Bipolar Wellness Center and Mental Health of 

America to facilitate support groups for individuals and families dealing 

with bipolar disorder. The support groups meet at 7 p.m. on the first 

and third Wednesday of each month. The meetings are free and no preregistration 

is required. 

■■ Monthly guest speakers on the 2nd Wednesday of each month on 

topics such as suicide prevention, sleep disorder, nutrition, exercise, and 

addictions, to name a few.

These gifts are easy to make and occur at a time when you no longer need 

the money. It has unlimited power and potential to serve the healing 

mission of St. Mary’s. You are also joining an elite group of individuals who 

have made provisions for St. Mary’s in their final estate. 

Charitable Gift Annuity 

Donors on a fixed income can receive a higher return on their income with 

a charitable gift annuity. For instance, Mrs. Smith is 75 years old. She can 

earn a guaranteed 6.2% annual return on her donation. Therefore, if she 

contributed a $100,000 gift to St. Mary’s through a charitable gift annuity 

she would receive $7,100 a year each year for the rest of her life. She would 

also enjoy generous tax benefits. Additionally, half of the income from a 

charitable annuity is tax free. At the time of Mrs. Smith’s death, the money 

benefits the people who are served by St. Mary’s.

Bender Memorial Education Fund 

will serve generations of physicians 

For 37 years Dr. Bender served St. Mary’s as an urologist. 

At 85 years of age, Dr. Bender and his wife, Lois, have decided to continue 

to serve the St. Mary’s community in another way by establishing an 

Education Endowment in the name of their deceased son, Gary Bender. 

The Benders’ 50-year-old son died suddenly and tragically from 

hypertension in 2002. Gary S. Bender was a practicing CPA as well as an 

attorney. He lived and worked in Omaha, Nebraska with his wife and two 

children. 

“We gave a great deal of thought to an appropriate way to honor Gary’s 

memory.” Bender recently recalled. “One week before Gary passed away I 

put some money into a gift trust which became the dollars used to start the 

Gary S. Bender Educational Endowment.” 

“Our affiliation with St. Mary’s goes back to 1955 when I started my 

practice at the old St. Mary’s Hospital. St. Mary’s staff and the Sisters 

treated my patients and me with consideration and skill throughout my 

years of practice and beyond. We have wonderful memories of St. Mary’s 

and it seemed fitting that we honor our son through St. Mary’s.”

Rights to confirm our commitment to
