Level 7, Lesson Plan 20, Chapter 27:
"The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick"
• Dinner (6:00-6:30)
• Aim: The need to heal the body and soul.
• Materials: Bibles, rosaries, Music Issue, Prayer handout, evaluations, pencils
• Key Words (Vocabulary):
anointing: The act of pouring oil on someone or something in a religious ceremony. It is a
sign of being specially chosen by God to share in Jesus' triple office of priest, prophet, and king.
oil of the sick: Oil which is blessed by a bishop for use in the sacrament of Anointing. Oil is a
symbol of strength and healing.
sign of Anointing: The priest anoints the person with the oil of the sick, ordinarily on the
person's forehead and on the palms of his hands while saying: "Through this holy anointing
may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord
who frees you from sin save you and raise you up."
indulgence: The partial or complete taking away of the punishment our sins deserve. We can
do this on earth through prayer, penance, and good works, or we can make up for our sins in
purgatory.
• Explanation
1. Opening Prayer, Scripture Reading, and Key Words (Matt) (6:30-6:35 PM)
Opening Prayer: Heavenly Father, We thank and praise you for the gift of our health.
We ask your forgiveness for those times when we take our good health for granted. May
we continue to hear the healing message of the Gospel for us so in need of forgiveness. We
ask you to continue to bring us comfort and to show us your mercy. We ask this through
Christ our Lord. Amen."
Scripture Reading: James 5:13-15
2. " Divine Physician" (Matt) (6:35-6:40 PM)
Message:
• Jesus institutes the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick by giving the power of healing to
his apostles (James 5:14-15, Mark 6:7-13)
•Why did Jesus send out his disciples two by two
•What role does oil play
•What kinds of illnesses are healed
•Does this sacrament have the power to forgive sins
•Does this sacrament have the power to heal a person physically
•Do we still see this sacrament in the Church today
• The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick strengthens a person to embrace God's will.
•May prepare a person for the gift of a happy death.
•May give a person bodily healing.
•Helps the recipient unit themselves to Christ and to Christ's sufferings.
•The recipient feels Christ's healing touch through this sacrament.
3. "The Sacrament" (Matt) (6:40-6:42 PM)
Message:
• The sacramental signs for the Anointing of the Sick.
• The minister of the sacrament is a priest.
• The matter consists of anointing the sick person with oil of the sick.
• The form is "Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you
with the grace of the Holy Spirit. Amen. May the Lord who frees you from sin, save
you and raise you up. Amen."
• The effects of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick include:
• Spiritual strengthening to accept God's plan for our lives and the grace to embrace
suffering and illness in union with our Lord.
• Venial sins are forgiven (and mortal sins if they are unable to recieve the Sacrament of
Penance). With the forgiveness of sins, the sick are prepared for their heavenly
reward.
• It is also possible for a person to be physically healed with the Anointing of the Sick.
4. Activity (Fr. Radloff, Lance) (6:42-6:55 PM) If possible, have the youth observe an actual
Anointing of the Sick (in which case, #5 below can be skipped and there will likely not be
time for #'s 7 &8). As an alternative, set up a table with everything that is needed for
the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick (white cloth for a small table, crucifix, two
white candles, holy water, holy oil of the sick, rites book). Have a priest explain the
steps of the rite.
5. "The Rite" (Fr. Radloff) (6:55-7:00 PM)
Message:
• The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick can be given anywhere.
• It is of greater importance than medical help.
• If possible, the sick person receives the Sacrament of Penance.
• The priest will bless the sick person's room with holy water in a sprinkling rite.
• Others are welcome to the Anointing of the Sick---for sacraments are for the church
community.
• Penitential rites and the creed.
• Bible reading that deals with healing and forgiveness.
• Actual anointing with oil occurs and the reading of prayers for the sick person.
• Holy Communion to the sick person and to those properly disposed who also wish to
receive.
• The ceremony closes with a blessing form the priest.
• When the priest give the sick person his last Communion, it is called viaticum, or food for
the journey.
• This Eucharist will strengthen the dying person for their journey to heaven.
6. "Indulgences" (Fr. Radloff) (7:00-7:05PM)
Message:
• Purgatory is a transitional state in which the souls of those who die in the state of grace are
purified of venial sins or their punishment due to sin.
•Every soul in purgatory is assured of heaven.
•Every soul in purgatory experiences the holy longing for God.
•Though the soul suffers, it is being prepared for eternal glory.
•The soul in purgatory is like metal being refined by fire.
• How can we prepare for happy death
•Pray for that gift.
•Stay in the state of grace.
•Recieve the sacraments often.
•Do good works.
• An indulgence is a remission of the temporal punishment due to sins that have already
been given.
• An indulgence shortens--or even take away--time we must spend in purgatory.
• Indulgences are acts of devotion and love by which God lessens the punishment we will
receive for our past sins.
• Plenary indulgences take away all punishment of our sin (it as though we have a clean
slate or a fresh new beginning with God).
• Partial indulgences remove some of our time or punishment due to sin.
• To obtain an indulgence, one must be in the state of grace and do the prescribed
prayer or devout action.
• To obtain a plenary indulgence, we must also pray for the Holy Father, receive the
Sacrament of Penance and Holy Eucharist within eight days, and be detached from all
sin.
• We may recieve indulgences for ourselves, for any other living person, or for any soul
in purgatory.
