B.2.6 Principal Components Analysis<br />

Make sure that there is a MATLAB "Stats" toolbox (Version 3.0 or later) exist in the<br />

toolbox directory <strong>of</strong> MATLAB. The procedure described here is essentially the same as<br />

the principal component analysis tutorial <strong>of</strong> the Multivariate statistics section <strong>of</strong> [68]. It<br />

shows an example <strong>of</strong> a typical PCA session with the Statistics Toolbox. A new data set<br />

has been created from the actual physiological data <strong>of</strong> the respiration, heart rate and<br />

blood pressure signals as well as the coherence and partial coherence in the LF and HF<br />

regions for both COPD and normal subjects. The data set is saved as an excel file<br />

(cpcohdata.xls) with columns as names <strong>of</strong> the subjects and 15 HRV parameters. The 55<br />

rows show the values <strong>of</strong> the 15 HRV parameters for all 47 COPD and 8 normal subjects.<br />

The 47 COPD subjects are numbered as rows 2-48. Rows 49-56 show the data for the<br />

normal subjects. The 15 different HRV parameters <strong>of</strong> the normal and COPD subjects in<br />

the data file are:<br />
