5.5 Cardiovascular System Models for COPD Subjects<br />

The next goal <strong>of</strong> this research was to use system identification techniques to develop a<br />

HRV model first for healthy normal subjects and then use this normal cardiovascular<br />

model as reference for the design <strong>of</strong> the diseased model that can represent the physical<br />

attributes <strong>of</strong> the COPD patients using an adaptive controller. An adaptive controller<br />

differs from an ordinary controller in that the controller parameters are variable, and there<br />

is a mechanism for adjusting these parameters online based on signals in the system. In<br />

this research the author used the so-called Model-Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC)<br />

model. A schematic <strong>of</strong> the MRAC system is represented in Figure 5.59.1. It is composed<br />

<strong>of</strong> four parts: a plant <strong>of</strong> the COPD cardiovascular system containing unknown parameters,<br />

a reference model <strong>of</strong> the cardiovascular system for compactly specifying the desired<br />

output (e.g. HR and ABP) <strong>of</strong> the control system, a feedback control law containing<br />

adjustable parameters, and an adaptation mechanism for updating the adjustable<br />

parameters [50].<br />
