5.4 Cardiovascular System Models for Normal Subjects<br />

A model <strong>of</strong> heart rate (HR) and arterial blood pressure (ABP) control similar to that<br />

shown in Figure 5.54 has recognized the complex interactions between FIR and ABP<br />

during closed-loop operation <strong>of</strong> the cardiovascular system. This model has been<br />

previously proposed and now widely accepted as a simple feedback and control model <strong>of</strong><br />

the cardiovascular system [29].<br />

Previous studies have successfully used non-parametric transfer function analysis<br />

in combination with broadband noise sources to address the following problems:<br />

1. Identification <strong>of</strong> the transfer relations between HR, ABP and the respiratory noise<br />

sources experimentally has been limited during spontaneous operation because the<br />

frequency content <strong>of</strong> the noise sources is relatively narrow-band and provides<br />

insufficient excitation energy at any relevant physiological frequencies.
