MATH<br />

<strong>Kindergarten</strong> students use the text, Math<br />

Advantage, published by Harcourt Brace.<br />

Instruction includes hands-on activities to<br />

develop concepts. The students will be introduced<br />

to the following areas of study.<br />

sorting and classifying<br />

patterns and movement<br />

matching and counting<br />

money<br />

measuring<br />

time<br />

identify and order numbers 0-100<br />

count to 100 by ones, twos, fives and tens<br />

introduction to addition and subtraction<br />

Each student will receive a report card at<br />

the end of each quarter. Parent-teacher<br />

conferences will be scheduled in November,<br />

but they can be requested at any<br />

time.<br />

HOME AND SCHOOL<br />

CONNECTIONS<br />

<strong>Kindergarten</strong> students will receive homework<br />

assignments from time to time.<br />

Please read to your child as often as possible.<br />

Please pray with your children and<br />

attend weekly Mass. Your support is key<br />

to their success.<br />

RELIGION<br />

<strong>Kindergarten</strong> children will learn through<br />

stories, activities, Scripture, prayer, discussion,<br />

and reflection about their <strong>Catholic</strong><br />

faith focusing on:<br />

traditional common prayers<br />

creation<br />

God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit<br />

celebrating with prayer services<br />

the sacraments<br />

liturgical seasons<br />

lives of the saints<br />

Our Religion text is Call to Faith,<br />

published by Harcourt Religion Publishers.<br />

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS<br />

Our Reading/Language Arts program is<br />

Houghton Mifflin Reading: A Legacy of<br />

Literacy. The components of the program<br />

emphasize the development of skills to allow<br />

students to learn to read. Houghton<br />

Mifflin offers information and activities at<br />

READING /LITERATURE<br />

The children will experience literature<br />

through read aloud books, Big Books, and<br />

On My Way practice readers provided by<br />

this series. They will also experience authentic<br />

literature in the form of poetry,<br />

folktales, non-fiction, fiction and fantasies.<br />

Reading fluency will develop and improve<br />

as students are presented with the following<br />

skills:<br />

phonemic awareness<br />

phonics/decoding<br />

high frequency words<br />

comprehending the main idea<br />

concept of print<br />

sequence of events<br />

inference/making predictions<br />

compare/contrast<br />

drawing conclusions<br />

WRITING AND LANGUAGE<br />

The components of this section are oral<br />

language, writing, listening and speaking.<br />

Skills will include:<br />

vocabulary expansion<br />

using exact naming words<br />

using exact describing words<br />

using singular and plural naming<br />
