Food Handlers’
Certification
SCCC Community Education is offering
“Food Safety for Food Handlers Certification”,
a 3-hour session, offered on Monday,
April 15 or Monday, May 20 at 6-9 pm at
SCCC.
Presented in conjunction
with the Sussex County
Department of Human
Services, this certification
course provides the
necessary skills required to
safely handle consumables.
Topics include a review of
hazards, personal hygiene,
equipment sanitization, and pest control. The
course satisfies the Food Handlers Sanitation
Training, as required by the Sussex County
Department of Health.
Taught by Peter Bilby, B.S., M.S., NJ
registered Environmental Health Specialist,

Certified Nurse Aide
Graduation
Family, friends and Barn Hill Care Center staff
celebrated with seven Sussex County Community
College Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) students
during a graduation ceremony held at Barn Hill
on Feb. 22. The CNA students successfully
completed 50 hours of classroom learning and
40 hours of clinical training required by
the NJ Department of Health and Senior
Services. The students will receive final state
certification upon completion of the NJ skills
and written competency exams.
Surg Tech - A Career in 12 Months
If you are interested in pursuing a career in the medical field, and
working with doctors and nurses in a hospital operating room sounds
exciting, you should consider becoming a Surgical Technologist.

Unique Watercolor Painting Course
“Watercolor on Gessoboard”, a course taught in 3 sessions, will take place on Mondays
May 6-20 from 3-5:30 pm, or Wednesdays, May 1-15 from 7-9:30 pm, and is taught by
Sparta artist Toni Chaplin. Chaplin studied under noted artists Edwin Havas, Bill Grah,
Ron Lent, and Janet Walsh, and has taught watercolor classes for several Sussex County
clubs and organizations. She is a member of the Sussex-Warren Arts Foundation, Art
Association of Roxbury, Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council, Essex Water Color
Club, and the New Jersey Watercolor Society.
Gessoboard, which is used as the base for Chaplin’s painting course, adds a unique texture
and look to watercolor, giving the illusion at times of oil paint. Using this approach
adds dimension and a striking appearance to any watercolor piece. The Gessoboard can
be purchased at an art supply store (8x10 or larger) or through the instructor. The course,

Chess for Beginners with a Chess Master
Longtime Chess Master, David Cole, winner of the Green Bay Open, the South
Dakota Governor’s Cup Championship, and captain of the 1999 Winning Team in
the Inaugural US Open Team Championship, is coming to SCCC. He is offering a
beginner’s course in Chess on Saturdays, June 1, 8, 15, and 22 from 10 am to 12 pm.
Cole will teach beginners basic and special moves, checkmate combinations,
strategies, and tactics. Chess is known to sharpen the mind, increase problem-solving

Rider Education of New Jersey
SCCC, in partnership with Rider Education of New Jersey,
is offering the Beginner Rider Course at the college, Parking
Lot 8 (behind the E Building), Fridays and weekends.
Beginner Rider Course
Experience motorcycling and street skills. This course,
approved by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and the NJ
Department of Highway Traffic Safety, is designed to teach
the novice motorcyclist the basic skills and mental
strategies required to ride.
The course consists of 15-20 hours of combined classroom and hands-on
training time on our range at Sussex County Community College. Motorcycles
and helmets are provided by Rider Education. This course is a must for anyone
interested in obtaining a motorcycle license.
Courses run every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday - April through October.

Marketing Strategies for Business Success
SCCC Community Education & Workforce Development joins with the New Jersey Small
Business Development Center (NJSBDC) in offering the workshop, Marketing Strategies for
Business Success, designed to help business owners and managers successfully define, target,
and reach markets for products or services. In a two-session class, Dolores Stammer, Regional
Director of the NJSBDC, will explain how to develop an action plan based on market research
and tactics. Any business can get results by targeting the market using the right methods.
The class meets on Tuesdays, April 16 and 23 from 6-9 pm in E Building, rm E105 at the

Essentials of MS Access
SCCC Community Education is providing classes in three levels of Microsoft Access –
Essentials, Intermediate, and Advanced, all taught by Bob Matchett, a Sussex County
continuing education instructor for over 10 years. Matchett started in the early 90’s at
Sussex County Vo-Tech and recently has resumed teaching at SCCC. He enjoys sharing
his knowledge with students and helping them gain the understanding and skills needed
to better utilize popular software programs. Upcoming courses include:
Essentials of Microsoft Access - Mondays, April 8 and 15, 6:30 – 9:30 pm.
Intermediate Microsoft Access - Mondays, April 22 and 29, 6:30 -9:30 pm.

Certified Medical Assistants (MA)
Dominique Forgione, MA 2009, left; Sheila Stalbaum,

for student clinical and job placement for many years. Forgione and
Michaels were hired by the facility following the completion of their

Trace Your Family Roots
This Summer
Genealogy is the study of families, tracing their
lineages and history. This course is designed for the
novice who always wanted to trace their family roots,
but didn’t know how to get started. Let our instructor
show you the ropes.
Jane Annunziata earned a BA in marketing from
Temple University, a MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management, and
additional graduate credits toward a second Masters in Educational Technology
from NJ City University. She also has a background in corporate marketing and
consulting, and as a certified teacher, she has spent several years instructing
business education at the high school level.
Learn where to find and how to use free databases on the internet to begin your
search, obtain historical records, and document your results. The 9-hour, 4-session
course offers a combination of lecture and hands-on research opportunities. An
optional lab provides additional opportunities to conduct independent research,
collaborate with the instructor and classmates, and share research tips and ideas.
“Introduction to Genealogy” is taught in 4 Tuesday sessions, June 18 and 25,
