Mission
The mission of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is to inspire an understanding of and
appreciation for the rich maritime heritage of the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal reaches,
together with the artifacts, cultures, and connections between this place and its people.
Vision
The vision of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is to be the premier maritime museum
for studying, exhibiting, preserving, and celebrating the important history and culture of
the largest estuary in the United States, the Chesapeake Bay.
• We will be acknowledged as the leading center for education, exhibition, and
preservation of Chesapeake Bay maritime cultures.
• We will inspire cultural stewardship by preserving, documenting, and sharing stories,
artifacts, skills, and the traditions of the generations of people who have lived and worked
in the Chesapeake Bay region.
• We will emphasize how the connections between people and the Bay’s natural
environment have shaped unique, traditional cultures.
• We will provide opportunities for visitors to make connections between past human
activities, present conditions, and future possibilities.

Inspire, educate, preserve, and belong––these four words
have graced the front of our past three annual reports and
serve as continuous reminders of why we are here, and why
this place matters. By inspiring and educating the next
generation, preserving the legacies and artifacts that define
the Chesapeake region, and fostering a sense of belonging
and responsibility, we encourage people to be stewards of the
Chesapeake Bay. We continue to be humbled by the outpouring
of support from you, our members and donors, and
remain deeply committed to ensuring your charitable donations
are put to good use.
For this 2011-2012 annual report, you’ll find stories of
people like you who care deeply about this place and are
supporters of the Museum. You’ll also find financial
information, our honor roll of donors, and a chance to look
ahead at what the Museum is offering in the coming months.
You can expect to receive your next issue of The Chesapeake Log
in February.
Between May 2011 and April 2012 (FY 2011-2012),
the Museum continued to build membership and increase
attendance. Your gifts to the 2011-2012 Annual Fund set yet
another all time record and allowed us to expand programs,
open new and engaging exhibits, and make much needed
improvements to campus. Two highlights made possible
by your support were the opening of our newest exhibits,
Gunning Among Friends: Chesapeake Waterfowl Hunting Clubs,
and Push and Pull: Life on Chesapeake Bay Tugboats.
With transportation a large part of the Chesapeake story,
the Tug exhibit is regarded as the most in-depth exhibit on
Chesapeake tugs in existence. Far beyond the high level of
interest created, the exhibit is exemplary of the authenticity
this Museum brings to all its exhibits, boat restoration, and
educational programs. With your help, the Museum has
carved out a special niche and serves as a model for what visitors want––original research
and first-hand accounts that can be found nowhere else. What’s compelling about the
stories we tell is not just the content of the Museum’s collections, it's more the context of
how they fit into our history and our lives that make them relevant and important.
This would be impossible without your continued support.
Our year was marked by growing audiences and member engagement for both our
signature events and special programming. The restoration of the skipjack Rosie Parks continues
to draw visitors, and has reunited four generations of Parks family members at our

The Museum welcomed new officers and seven new members to its board of governors during its June 20, 2011 annual meeting.

annual OysterFest. The tug Delaware celebrated her centennial with a full restoration and
made her debut at the opening of the Tug exhibit. Our educational programs continue to
grow and expand for both children and adults, with a new Oystering Legacy Tour, revitalized
Lighthouse Overnight Adventure program, Speaker Series, and more. With the help of grants
and philanthropic support, Navy Point received some much needed attention with a new
bulkhead, upgraded marina services, and a new irrigation system and sod.
A special thanks to the dedicated corps of volunteers who in FY 2011-2012 donated
a combined total of 28,200 hours of service to the Museum—the equivalent of nearly
15 full-time employees. With their help, a native harbor garden was planted in front
of our three historic houses at the entry to the Museum, to hold back high tides and
protect the lawn.
The Museum is fortunate that membership dues and admission receipts cover a higher
percentage of expenses than most of our peers. Yet, combined, they support less than a third
of the Museum’s annual operating budget. We are fortunate to be awarded government grants
for some of our projects, and even more so, for the philanthropic individuals, organizations,
and foundations that love the Chesapeake Bay and support our work.
With your continued support, the Museum faces a strong future as we inspire, educate,
preserve, and build a sense of belonging to the Chesapeake region. Future generations
are counting on us. For all you do, for all you’ve done, and for all you will do, we sincerely

deep. His first memories
of this area date back to
1937 at the Miles River
Yacht Club Regatta. At
age 17, he and a friend
sailed around the harbor
in St. Michaels, tying up at
Navy Point and watching
all the events. Years later,
Irénée met Bronza Parks,
Irénée du Pont Jr. aboard the Barbara
Batchelder in the fall of 2011.
who built the Barbara Batchelder for him and his wife
Barbara, the skipjack's namesake, in 1955.
“I only knew Bronzie for the last two years of his life, but
he was one of those people who was gifted with the ability
to make everybody feel like they were Bronzie Parks’ best
friend. Everybody he met, he made them feel that way.
After our boat was built, my wife and I began making
regular trips to St. Michaels, and then to the Museum when it
was created in the 1960s. The Museum is a real gem of a
resource on the Chesapeake Bay. I look at all of the good
works it's been doing with programs, exhibits, and outreach
to the community, and I’m impressed.”

as an adult, he proposed
to his girlfriend in the
Hooper Strait Lighthouse,
where they later married
in 2000. Now with four
children, Mike and his wife
Susan appreciate the
Museum as a place that
Susan and Mike Reagoso were married
on the Tolchester Beach Bandstand in
2000, and now enjoy bringing their four
children to the Museum.

the recently opened Push and Pull: Life on Chesapeake Bay
Tugboats exhibit.

The Museum exists today,
in large part, because of
a small group of dedicated
individuals, who were
determined to create a
place where Chesapeake
history could be preserved
and celebrated.
Judge John C. North II is
one of those individuals,
serving on the original
board of governors, and
as counsel negotiating the
purchase of much of
Judge North holds the Commodore Bartlett
Trophy, which is presented by the Museum
to the winner of the final log canoe race of
the season. Judge North's log canoe Island
Bird has won eight times since 1972.
the Museum’s property. He served as its first vice president,
later its president, and drafted the original articles of
incorporation of the Museum in 1968.
“My great-grandfather was William Sidney Covington, who
built the famous log canoes Island Bird and Island Blossom,
which we are fortunate enough to own. The Museum has
been a very important part of my life and my family’s life
because so much of my family’s heritage is represented in
the Museum’s exhibits. It is, by all odds, the most important
institution of its kind to the entire North family and we
are delighted to continue to endorse and support it to the
fullest extent.”

sailed up and down the
East Coast, from Florida to
Lake Ontario, their summer
homeport, for many years.
In 1987, after showing
their boat in the Annapolis
Sailboat Show, they decided
to visit St. Michaels,
and they have made the
town a regular sojourn
during their travels ever
since. In the beginning, their
interest in the Museum was
Bill and Carol May with grandkids
Charlie and Kate.
as an inexpensive place to tie up the boat, but over the
years, the Museum began to play an increasingly important
role in their lives.
“It’s a magical spot, and we’ve been going north and south
for years and years, and we’ve spent a lot of time on the
Chesapeake. The Museum has impacted our life quite a
bit—we got to know some of the people at the Museum
very well, and have become friends. It’s an integral part of
St. Michaels, which we think is a wonderful little town.”

Ellen and Norm
Plummer have long
shared an interest in
yachting, boating,
and all things
maritime, which led
Ellen & Norm Plummer
them to join the
Museum. They visited St. Michaels regularly from Washington,
DC, and after retiring in 1988 became loyal, longstanding
volunteers. They play a pivotal role in researching information
and photos for various Museum publications, books,
and exhibits. Norm wrote three books and several Weather
Gauge articles, and Ellen spent countless hours on photographic
research, most notably for the “Oystering on the
Chesapeake” exhibit, and the much-loved cookbook, From a
Lighthouse Window.

because I believe in history; this is local
history, but it’s also a part of our national
history. I think the more people know
about our history, the better off we’ll be.
And not just big events, but what the
ordinary people did, and how they lived.”

Clark Johnson and his wife
Karen purchased their boat
in 1996 and one of the very
first trips they ever took was
to St. Michaels. They loved
the town and their kids
always had a fun time at the
Museum. They continued to
visit St. Michaels over the
years and recently came
back for OysterFest.
“The time that really made
an impression on me was
about two years ago. We
were with another couple
and it was really bad
weather and I was on the
boat, which was anchored
out a ways, and my wife
Clark recently claimed his prize in the
Museum's Boating Party fundraiser cannon
raffle, saying “Truly I have only once in my
life won a lottery pick. It was in 1966 when
my local draft board picked me as a lucky
winner for the position in the US Army. I
was in the artillery units, so I know what a
cannon is all about!”
Karen was caught on the shore and I couldn’t hear them, I
didn’t have the radios on or anything.
Karen is a diabetic and she had to get back to the boat and
one of the shipwrights at the Museum offered to take her
back to the boat. I came back to the shore soon after and
joined the Museum, and this shipwright was just a very nice
person, and we were impressed that there are still people in
the world like that.”
“A little bit after that, I started contributing
monthly and I have ever since. We support
the Museum because it’s just a really nice
thing to do and especially if you live in
Maryland, you should support the Museum.
It’s the heritage of Maryland. It’s the
heritage of the Eastern Shore, and there
is just no other place like it.”

“Gunning Among Friends: Chesapeake Waterfowl Hunting Clubs” opened
on April 14, 2012. Banding together for a day’s hunting is a longtime
practice among those hunting waterfowl for sport. And when the duck
blind is too far from home, remote clubhouses near the marshy shorelines
have provided a home away from home. Whether populated by wealthy
hunters from another state or working class friends from closer by,
waterfowling clubs have formed along the Chesapeake Bay from the
Susquehanna Flats in the north to the saltwater marshes along the lower
Eastern Shore since the early 19th century. This exhibit, which examined
these clubs and featured historic photos, documents, decoys, and
other gunning accoutrements, closed in November, 2012.

Captain Berg's stories, and others, of life aboard a tugboat are featured in
“Push and Pull: Life on Chesapeake Bay Tugboats” which opened on April 21,
2012. The Chesapeake is a highway for tugs and barges, and for the large ships
aided by tugs in port. This exhibit explores the lives of the men and women
who work on these tugboats and the variety of ways tugs are used around
the Chesapeake. In addition to interactive displays along with the images and
stories of life on tugboats, the exhibit includes a large, compound steam engine
salvaged from the 1924 C&O railroad tug, W. J. Harahan. Visitors to the exhibit
gain historical perspective on what has changed in the world of tugboats on
the Bay since their first arrival, and meet some of the captains and crew who
work—and sometimes live—aboard these hard-working boats. To gather the
stories of these men and women, Museum Folklorist Michelle Zacks went aboard
tugs, photographed their work, collected photographs from some of the crews,
and conducted a series of oral history interviews all around the Bay. The exhibit
continues through 2014.

Fifty-seven members of the Parks family, spanning four generations, came to the
2011 OysterFest to celebrate the restoration of the skipjack Rosie Parks. Together
with Museum staff and donors to the restoration project, the family reconnected
and shared memories of Rosie’s builder Bronza Parks, and his brother Captain Orville
Parks. Some of the tools used to build Rosie were donated to the Museum and local
Chesapeake artist Marc Castelli gave sketches of Rosie to family members.
Pam and Dennis Pitt, of Hurlock, Maryland, are two of the newest members of
the Museum's Perpetual Mariner Society, which recognizes supporters who
have included the Museum in their estate plans. The Pitts have a special love of
the Museum's floating fleet, and one vessel in particular, the 1889 nine-log
bugeye Edna E. Lockwood. Pam's father, Reginald D. “Raggy” Todd, was
Edna's skipper from 1948 until the late 1950s.

the working ways of the Chesapeake. I wish I
understood how much I was getting as a kid
in the 60s/70s by being exposed to the real
men of the Bay. I didn't—and like many
others, looked hard for my way out.

something as simple as catchin' crabs and
oysters are to our regional heritage. Y'all are
doin' good—and I hope that I can contribute

David is the great-grandson of
Delaware’s builder William H. Smith.
In recognition of her centennial, the tug
Delaware was hauled out of the water in early
September, 2011. Shipwrights, with the help
of boatyard volunteers, used a combination of
historic photographs and oral histories taken
from those who've worked on Delaware, to
restore her to the authentic appearance from
her heyday. Delaware is a rare example of a
typical early 20th century wooden river tug.
Built in 1912 in Bethel, Delaware, by William
H. Smith, the tug Delaware measures 39’8”
x 11’4”. Delaware is the product of Bethel’s
great age of wooden ship and boatbuilding
and apart from the 1900 ram schooner Victory
Chimes (formerly Edwin and Maud), she may
be the only survivor.

and multiple grants from the State of
Maryland, the Museum was able to
replace 681 linear feet of decayed
wooden bulkhead with more durable
vinyl sheathing, adding one finger pier
and three spring pilings, and upgrading
marina electric and water service.
In addition to new decking under the
lighthouse, Navy Point received a new
irrigation system and sod.

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is extremely lucky to have a dedicated corps of
more than 200 volunteers, who donated a combined 28,220 hours of service to the
Museum over the last year, the equivalent of nearly 15 full-time employees. Volunteer
effort and dedication brought this Museum into existence and has helped shape the mission
that still guides us. The Museum could not function without our cadre of volunteers to work
alongside staff throughout the institution—as docents, cataloguers, receptionists, boatbuilders,
gardeners, store assistants, model makers, and more. If you are interested in volunteering,

In the meantime, here's a brief look at upcoming events and programs for this winter.
ChesAdventures
Children ages 4-9 can fill their Saturdays with two hours of
fun-filled and challenging hands-on games, arts and crafts, and
storytelling at the Museum’s ChesAdventures Program. Each
Chesapeake-themed class has two sessions; 10-12noon for 4-6
year olds, and 1-3pm for 7-9 year olds.
Pre-registration is required, call 410-745-4941 to reserve a
spot. Visa, Mastercard, and Discover accepted. Gift certificates
available. $12 for members, $15 non-members. A six-session
pass is available for $68 for Museum members, and $80 for
non-members. Scholarships for individual classes are available
for qualifying students.

Volunteer Programs
Van Lennep Auditorium
Become a docent volunteer and lead guided tours of the campus,
exhibits, and artifacts for adults and children. No prior experience
necessary. Each session of the general tour training is mandatory to
complete the docent training and to graduate from the program.

2013 Winter Speaker Series:
This Old Chesapeake House
Old houses are part of the flavor of the Chesapeake landscape
and remind us constantly of the presence of the past in our
day-to-day lives. Join us as we explore the legacy, history, and
stories of these historic structures throughout the Bay region.
Through three sessions, the series will cover the intimate history,
painstaking restoration, and ongoing preservation efforts of old
Chesapeake houses, large and small, public and private.
Space limited and pre-registration is required for all events.

$8 for non-members, or register for all three sessions and save,
$15 for members, $20 for non-members.

Not all old Chesapeake houses are on land, plenty are also on (or over)
the water. Bay lighthouses are some of the Bay’s most treasured but
also most endangered "old houses." In this program, join Anne Arundel
County’s Cultural Resource Planner Jane Cox as she talks about her
career preserving some of the Chesapeake’s most iconic lighthouses,
and her current efforts as a private owner to restore the Baltimore
Lighthouse, one load of ferried-in supplies at a time.

Author and photographer Shirley Hampton Hunt will explore through
story and pictures the process of writing and photographing images for
her book, The Vanishing Landscape, which documents the history and
collapse of abandoned old houses on the Eastern Shore, their relationship
to a changing environment, and a population balancing the legacy
of the past with the promise of the future.

Elizabeth Beckley of Preservation Maryland will discuss her career as a
historical restorer, old house aficionado, owner, and preservationist. With
a professional and personal life spent in, on, and under old Chesapeake
houses, Beckley’s talk will be illustrated by the lively stories and photos
of her restoration adventures.

A skinny-tailed cousin of the beaver, muskrats make their homes around
the many creeks that snake through the marshlands of the Chesapeake.
Join us for an evening of muskrat talk and tasting to learn about
traditional ways of trapping, cooking, and eating the furry creature that
some have called the “Dorchester Marsh Rabbit.”
Leading the conversation will be mother and daughter Nellie Flowers
and Rhonda Aaron, along with Morgan Bennett III, of Maryland
Furtrappers, Inc., all natives of the marshy world of Dorchester County.

Maryland Humanities Council Grant
awarded to CBMM for
“Community Conversations”
The Museum received a $6,300 grant from the Maryland Humanities
Council for seed money to fund an innovative initiative focusing on
"Community Conversations." The first series, entitled "State of the
Oyster," will focus on the status of the fisheries and their past, present,
and future significance to Chesapeake Bay communities. Scheduled for
four Sunday afternoons in late winter 2013, the programs will pose the
question of whether, and how, oyster production can continue as the
backbone of the region's culture and economy.
Biological dimensions of the “oyster question” will be addressed,
but the primary focus will be on cultural and social dynamics of the
issue. One of the most significant goals of this project is to host public
forums where stakeholders possessing different, and in some cases,
conflicting perspectives can have meaningful conversations, promoting
open and civil dialogue about topics important to the community as a
whole. Dates to be announced in the upcoming Winter/Spring edition
of The Chesapeake Log, and to be available on our website, cbmm.org.
