2006
Celebrating 25 years of UPP
On 4 May 1981, Shell became
the fi rst major oil company to
use UPP polyethylene fl exible
underground pipework as a
viable alternative to metallic
pipe at one of its service
stations in Stockholm, Sweden.
A quarter of a century later,
PetroTechnik is celebrating
the success of UPP as the
world’s number one fuel
pipework system.
PetroTechnik company
director, Jan Ageheim fi rst
discovered the suitability
of polyethylene for use
with fuels when he was
an engineering student in
1969. He was ahead of his
time and it took a while for
the authorities to take him
seriously.
In the early 1980’s, with help
from a Finnish friend, Olavi
Winquist, now 84, Jan gained
UPP’s first approval from the
Swedish Fire and Explosives
agency.
Now with well over 30,000
installations in 134 countries
and UPP approved by more
worldwide legislative and
environmental agencies than
any other similar product,
PetroTechnik has a great deal
to celebrate.
Jan Ageheim revisits the fi rst site ever to use UPP products in May 2006.
The site is still operational today using the original UPP pipework.
The contract, won by
PetroTechnik France, was for
14 FuelBank bunded storage
units and for 22 double
skinned underground storage
tanks.
PetroTechnik’s dealer in the
Congo has also supplied
and installed UPP pipework
systems. The FuelBanks are
to be used as mobile service
stations along the Congolese
roads and the tanks were to
be installed mainly in the two
major cities of the Congo,
Brazzaville and Pointe Noire.
CZ manufactured the tanks in
the UK.
The UPP UL 971 primary pipe
has the same construction
Extra pipe, which has been
in the fi eld since 1996. The
new UL approved double wall
secondary containment pipe
is an integral pipe. It now has
a thicker secondary wall with
an inner permeation liner, the
same as in the primary pipe.
In response to customer
requests, PetroTechnik has
reduced the size of the
secondary containment of
3" double wall pipe from 6"
to only 4" achieving a 90%
reduction in the interstitial
space volume. This improves
performance of continuous
required by vacuum systems
in the State of California.
An interview with Jan Ageheim,
the man who started it all
The 3" double wall system is
less bulky, easier to handle
and standard UPP tools can
be used to cut and scrape
the pipe. Sliding reducers
are now available to make
secondary in line joints and
connections.
All rubber test boots have
been eliminated in the new
UPP UL system in favor of
welded polyethylene boots.
The new UL approved UPP
System is still entirely electrofusible
and existing fi ttings
and electro-fusion seals are
all compatible.

Going from strength
to strength in Japan
Site in Japan in the early stages of development
One year on from the
formation of P&D Japan and
demand for UPP products
in that market is rising fast.
Over the last few months,
100 installers received on
site training and the same
number of installations were
completed. This brings the
total number of UPP sites in
Japan to 500.
Launched October 2005,
P&D is a joint venture
between PetroTechnik and
Denaro International Inc., the
company that introduced cash
management equipment and
vapour recovery technology
to the Japanese self-serve
petrol station market. The
new venture is receiving great
support from distribution
company Nippon Engineering
Services who have worked
with PetroTechnik in Japan
since 2001.
As the use of rigid steel piping
was still widespread in Japan,
with the exception of some
of the major oil companies,
one of P&D’s fi rst goals was
to familiarise the market with
fl exible pipework systems.
This meant training and
certifying as many Japanese
technicians as possible.
Shell’s new Caribbean licensees
continue with UPP
With Shell selling many
of its Caribbean service
stations to local licensees,
the majority of retail gas
stations in the area now fall
under the control of the
Barbados-based SOL Group.
Miami-based Bolivar
Trading Inc., PetroTechnik’s
distributor of UPP
products in the area, has
succeeded in getting each
new licensee to specify
UPP as their underground
piping standard for their
projects.
SOL now manages
approximately 300 service
stations including those in
the Lesser Antilles islands,
Suriname, Guyana, Belize
and Puerto Rico. The Shell
stations in the Bahamas are
now managed by FOCOL/
Sun Oil Bahamas, a local
Bahamian company. Jamaica
is now operated by COOL
Petroleum, which is a part
of the COOL Group, out
of Jamaica.
According to Chris
Corrigan, Caribbean
Territory Manager for
Bolivar Trading, “The
employees of these new
companies had been using
UPP under Shell and were
comfortable with the
product and the support
they’d received thus far. I
think this made keeping
UPP as the piping standard
an easy choice. We’re
happy to continue to
support them under their
new management.”
UPP for PETROM Morocco
PETROM, one of the major
oil companies in Morocco
will use UPP for all their
future projects. The company
has more than 230 service
stations all around Morocco.
2
The agreement was sealed
during a training session
for all installers on site
at Berrechid, Kiaf. Two
additional sites at Casa
tit Mellil, Attacharouk and
Marrakech, Bledna are already
underway.
Shell Oman switches to UPP
Shell Oman Marketing has
installed UPP for the first
time at the Darsait Service
Station near Muscat in Oman.
It’s a new-to-dealer site
owned by Sheikh Mustahail
Bin Ahmed Bin Ali al Mashaani.
The station provides Super
and Regular petrol from six
dispensers and Diesel from a
further two dispensers. Four
50,000 litres tanks provide
the storage capacity. The
tank pit has a 2.1mm thick
polyethylene liner.
Installers used 200 metres of
63mm UPP Extra secondary
contained pressure line inside
110mm UPP Duct and around
30 metres each of fill and
vent lines. The tank access
chambers have PetroTite
PowerLift PC76 access covers.
The fi lling lines run from
a PetroTite DS3617 sump,
which is easily adapted as a
fi lling box to the PetroTite
DC4830 tank access
chambers. They are seen
The fi rst three UPP sites have
been completed in Korea and
eight more are expected by
December 2006.
Three UPP training
programmes have been run
On site at Shell Darsait in Oman. Zubin Thomas Mathew, Project & Maintenance Engineer for
Apex Mechanical Engineering, discusses the 110mm UPP extra fi lling line with one of his fi tters.
storage tanks.
All pipe and conduit entry
boots to chambers and sumps
are PetroTechnik 300 Series
fusion seals meaning no metal
fi xings buried in the ground.
Visitors to the site from the
local Shell Retail Engineering
so far with more scheduled
in the future. PetroTechnik
Trainer, Wayne Cutting has
received very favourable
comments about the UPP
Salim Al Busaidi, Engineering
Manager; Hafi dh Al Azkawi
and Sharad Nayak, Project
Engineers and Roberto
Abasolo and V. Elias. A training
audit was carried out by
Charles Smith, PetroTechnik’s
sales manager for Europe and
the Middle East.
PetroTechnik engineer, David
Brookes has invented a
clever jig to make it easier to
position pipe without having
the spill bucket in place.
The invention came about
when Exxon Mobil asked for
a solution to integrate UPP
product lines with the new
double wall spill bucket from
OPW.
The UPP fi breglass entry seals
are completely compatible
with the OPW product. The
fi rst parts of the installation
process can be completed in
the workshop to save time
on site.
Installation was much easier
than the Gilbarco installers
anticipated as PetroTechnik
has produced instructions
with exact measurements.
UPP well received in Korea
“The trend until now was for
polyethylene product lines
and the rest of the system in
stainless steel. Now they are
familiar with UPP in Korea
they can’t get enough of it.”
UPP fi rst to be
approved in India
PetroTechnik has begun
developing the market for
UPP in India. UPP was the
fi rst fl exible pipework system
to be approved by the Indian
regulatory authority. Over
20 installers have been
trained and more courses are
scheduled in Bangalore and
Mumbai later this year.
PetroTechnik is pleased to
be working with Midco, the
market leading dispenser
manufacturer and its services
supplier OILCO who build
stations for Shell. So far
OILCO has completed four
stations and has another six
in progress. A further 36 are
due to be started in October.
UPP is stocked in Chennai,
Bangalore, Mumbai and
Calcutta and is ideally placed
for reaching most regions of
this vast market.
FEATURING PETROTECHNIK DO BRASIL
A qualidade do produto é
nossa “lição de casa” de todo
dia; é total e continuamente
monitorada pela Petrotechnik
desde o projeto, passando
pela escolha das matérias
primas e indo até os testes
fi nais com o produto pronto.
O caso da instalação é
bastante diferente, já que
sempre envolve terceiros.
Estes, se não forem alvo de
treinamentos detalhados,
amplos e regulares de nossa
parte, poderão, ainda que
muitas vezes em “boa fé”,
instalar inadequadamente
os produtos, podendo tornálos
causa de acidentes e
vazamentos.
Nesse sentido a Petrotechnik
proporciona, como padrão
de suporte pós-venda, entre
outros tipos e formas de
assistência, o treinamento “in
loco” aos instaladores dos
produtos UPP, sendo que,
em toda primeira instalação
em cada país, o faz sem
adicionar custos a eles ou aos
distribuidores locais e, claro,
nem ao cliente fi nal.
Assim foi feito em setembro
último, quando aconteceu a
primeira instalação UPP na
Nicarágua. Nosso distribuidor
para a América Central e
Caribe, a Bolívar Trading
PetroTechnik do Brasil
received its second Top of
Business award at a ceremony
at the Gran Meliá Mofarrej
July 2006. The fi rst award
was received in 2004 for
the company’s performance
inside Brazil. This year the
award was for its exemplary
performance on the
international scene.
PetroTechnik do Brasil
provides UPP products and
support to the 41 countries
of Latin America and the
Caribbean in partnership
with 10 distributors and
os integrantes da equipe
técnica da BT, os quais
Treinamento intensivo
na instalação é a melhor
forma de garantir que os
produtos UPP apresentarão
a performance projetada e
construída. “
BR Distribuidora, Copec,
PDVSA, Shell, Esso, Texaco,
Repsol-YPF and some
independent oil companies
who have around 40,000
service stations between
them.
The formula
for success
As PetroTechnik do Brasil
completes its first UPP
installation in Nicaragua
and wins the Top of
Business Award for the
second time, Moacir Arruda,
sales manager for Latin
America, reflects on what
keeps UPP at the top of its
game.
“From its foundation 25 years
ago, two points have been
fundamental to the success of
the UPP brand all over the world:
quality of product and quality
of fi eld installation. Maintaining
product quality is what we
do every day; it is totally and
continually monitored by
PetroTechnik from design, to the
acquisition of raw materials and
goes on to the delivery of the
fi nal product.
Installation is different, as it
involves third parties. Trained by
us thoroughly and regularly, we
ensure that installations are leak
and accident free.
This is why PetroTechnik
provides, as standard, after-sale
support and, amongst other
types of assistance, “on-site”
training to UPP installers. More
than that and because only
installers trained and accredited
by PetroTechnik authorized
personnel may install its
products, the fi rst installation in
each country is always overseen
by PetroTechnik supervisors and
is done without any additional
cost to the installer, local
distributor or customer.
This is what happened in
Nicaragua last September when
the fi rst UPP installation took
place. PetroTechnik’s distributor
for Central America and the
Caribbean, Bolivar Trading
International (Miami, USA),
via their Nicaragua Manager,
Mrs. Hellen Rios, designated
one of their technical teams
for the installation of a Shell
service station, the La Concha,
in the city of Rivas, some 100
kilometers from the capital city,
Managua.
PetroTechnik director, Jan
Ageheim from Sweden, helped
by myself, provided four days of
intense practical and theoretical
training to all technicians. These
installers then became certifi ed
and their names are added
to our central list of Certifi ed
Installers. Intensive training on
the installation ensures that the
UPP product will perform as
intended by PetroTechnik.”
CZ’s base frame tank
developed in conjunction with
BP Bovis Alliance won the
award for the best new idea.
Base frames and holding
down straps are fitted to
conventional underground
storage tanks in the factory
eliminating the need for
site personnel to enter an
excavation area whilst tanks
are being placed in position.
Once in situ, concrete is
poured from above to cover
the base frame.
PetroTainer lowers
tank shipping costs
High shipping costs for
storage tanks have previously
made it too expensive for CZ
tanks to be shipped outside
Europe.
Now there’s PetroTainer, a
double skinned tank inside an
ISO frame allowing shipment
overseas at a similar cost to a
standard container.
The PetroTainer can be
stacked with other containers
on freight ships. The
frame can be re-used after
transport or buried with the
tank for ease of installation.
One 5,000 litre tank and
two 2,500 litre tanks have
been delivered to the
British Embassy in Bucharest,
Romania. Ordered by UK
Easing the symptoms of
CZ has manufactured and
delivered a specialist one
person Hyperbaric Oxygen
Chamber to Diveline Medical
Limited.
wholesale electrical company,
Britsource, the tanks will
be used for storing oil for
standby generators.
The vessel is used for helping
to ease the symptoms of
Multiple Sclerosis sufferers.
It has wheelchair access
through a bulkhead door and
there are benches to sit
or lie on.
Once a patient is
inside the vessel,
the pressure
is raised. This
is repeated
periodically to give a
great deal of comfort.
Two 21-metre tanks delivered
to remote location
Rolls-Royce marine services
recently ordered four CZ
polished stainless steel tanks
for a refurbishment project it
was undertaking for the Royal
Naval nuclear submarine base
at Devonport.
The tanks are to be used
as part of the process
for handling radioactive
waste. As such, they needed
signifi cant non-destructive
testing. This included 100%
X-ray, ultrasonic and hydraulic
testing.
Two very large CZ tanks
ordered by Costain were
delivered down extremely
narrow lanes to the remote
location of the Thames Water
Sundridge Pumping Station
near Sevenoaks in Kent, UK.
The tanks are 2.4 metres in
diameter, 21 metres long and
weigh 24 tonnes. They are to
be used near boreholes for
dosing water with chlorine to
disinfect it.
The vessels have an internal
fi lter plate and are lined
with a DWI (Drinking Water
Inspectorate) approved
solvent free epoxy.
CZ often has to deliver very
large vessels to locations
that were established before
the need for large tanks
was realised. This can often
involve clearing the streets
of cars and removing street
signs.
OFF THE DRAWING BOARD
New director of engineering
PetroTechnik strengthens senior management team
by appointing Andrea Ticci as director of engineering
Andrea Ticci joined
PetroTechnik in July, bringing
with him a wealth of industry
experience. Previously with
one of PetroTechnik’s major
competitors, Andrea
was responsible for the
concept and development
of all petrol pipe product
lines.
Prior to this he held a number
of technical engineering
roles in the water and
nuclear industries. He has
a doctorate in Nuclear
Engineering from Pisa
University.
Andrea wasn’t looking for a
new role when PetroTechnik’s
Chief Executive Offi cer, John
Boudry approached him. John
was very persuasive and
when, fi nally, Andrea agreed
to visit PetroTechnik he was
impressed and realised the
great opportunity offered. He
describes the company as well
organised and professionally
structured. He also praises
the company’s plain speaking.
His key objective at
PetroTechnik is to continue
to keep the UPP product
line one step ahead of world
standards. He is also tasked
with making the company self
suffi cient in its research and
development and product
testing capabilities so that it
can move even faster to meet
its customers needs.
New training and tracking
Improving communication between
customers and suppliers
PetroTechnik’s customers
can now find quality assured
installers at the click of
a button following the
company’s investment in a
secure online installer-training
database.
This has been supported
by the introduction of an
identity card training scheme
for installers to give proof
of training courses taken
and accreditations received
in each category of training.
Details can only be input by PetroTechnik Authorised Trainers.
With oil companies becoming more removed
from the day-to-day management of site
construction, there is an urgent need for tighter
controls and better communication between
third parties. Lee Markham, PetroTechnik design
engineer looks at how to streamline on site
communication.
The design and the
construction of a forecourt
involves many key players in
the supply chain. With the
continuous demand of quality
improvement in every stage,
from the conception to the
construction, the importance
of having an effective and
immediate exchange of
information has never been
greater.
From a PetroTechnik
perspective, quality
installations are achieved
through high quality training
practices and more effective
communication. To maintain
quality, a detailed appreciation
of all equipment, product
and installation procedures
must be maintained and held
within the third party project
management consultancies.
PetroTechnik is continually
working with its suppliers and
customers to eliminate the
risk of miscommunication.
Understanding customer,
distributor and installer
requirements and
communicating clearly is
what ultimately enables
PetroTechnik to develop userfriendly
products and services
that are of the highest
possible quality.
The PetroTechnik way is to:
1. Keep a dedicated team
managing the training of
installers and trainers on
UPP products
2. Provide its engineering
team with the latest CAD
and CAE tools making
continual innovation
possible
3. Implement cross functional
project teams to support
the engineering team with
product development
4. Maintain a global network
of distributors and
installers closely supported
by a highly experienced
network of regional sales
managers
5. Work in partnership
with manufacturers and
suppliers at all levels to
ensure everyone gets
it right fi rst time with
shorter lead times.
The efforts of PetroTechnik
will improve productivity
and ultimately reduce
costs by eliminating any
need for corrective action.
Oil companies can have
the confi dence that the
installations are being installed
correctly but verifi ed with a
close eye by the third party
consultants.
The question now is: ‘how
can these types of supply
chain evolve to enhance and
improve productivity’ and
‘where is it likely to end up’
One option to reduce the
number of communication
channels is to create a series
of cross-functional teams
with representatives from
each organisation within
the supply chain. This would
serve to eliminate the bulk of
miscommunication. Working
more closely to attain high
standards of installations
can be achieved at a faster
rate and the consultants in
charge of the project can
communicate quickly and
effectively with all concerned.
It would also bring oil
companies closer to the
organisations that would
otherwise have little or no
interaction with them. In
other words second and third
tier suppliers will have direct
communication with the oil
companies.
However productivity is
improved in the future, the
supply chain structures need
to be organised so that
communication routes are
as short and as efficient as
possible.
Pipe Product Details
Whereas many of
PetroTechnik’s competitors
have had to design
completely new pipework
systems to meet the revised
UL 971, its existing UPP
System has secured UL and
cUL 971 approvals from the
Underwriters Laboratories
Inc.
PetroTechnik has made some
minor enhancements to its
existing system and kept the
basic pipe construction the
same.
Not only does this mean
that PetroTechnik customers
have access to a well proven
pipework system, as this
generation of pipe has been
in the fi eld since 1996, it also
means that UPP pipework is
available at very competitive
prices.
Whilst UPP Extra primary
pipe remains the same, the
new approved integral double
wall pipe now has a thicker
secondary wall with an inner
permeation liner, the same as
in the primary pipe.
The outside diameter of the
primary and secondary 2"
pipe has not changed. This
means that the new UL
approved UPP system is still
entirely electro-fusible and
existing fi ttings and electrofusion
seals are all compatible.
PetroTechnik has eliminated
all rubber test boots in favour
of welded polyethylene boots
that will not degrade over
time.
In response to customer
requests, PetroTechnik has
been able to reduce the size
of 3" secondary contained
double wall pipe from 6" to
4" achieving a 90% reduction
in the interstitial space
volume. This improves the
performance of continuous
monitoring as required by
vacuum systems.
The 3" double wall system is
less bulky, easier to handle
and standard UPP tools can
be used to cut and scrape
the pipe. Sliding reducers
are now available to make
secondary in line joints and
connections. The primary
pipework can be visually
tested before closing the
secondary containment.
Flexible, yet rigid
UPP UL 971 pipe is still
fl exible as its always been,
allowing it to snake and bend
on site without the need for
elbows or joints.
However, because of its
rigidity, the UPP system can
confi dently be installed using
direct buried tees, elbows
and joints for product, vent
or vapor recovery. The UPP
system can be laid out to suit
a “fl exible pipe” site layout
or a fi breglass routing in the
trench.
UPP pipe is also rigid enough
to be certifi ed by CARB for
vapor recovery applications
No mechanical
joints or leak paths
Entry seals are available
for single and double
wall fi breglass sumps and
containment units. This
means no mechanical joints
and no leak paths. The seals
are resin bonded to the
sump wall and fusion welded
directly onto the pipework.
Electrofusion seals are
available for welding directly
to polyethylene sumps and
the seal incorporates an
electrofusion entry, which
also welds to the pipe itself,
eliminating all rubber entries,
bolt holes or sealant, unique
to UPP systems.
UPP UL 971 system key benefits
• Based on existing product range and not newly developed to
pass UL tests
• Offers complete continuity and peace of mind
• Proven in the fi eld since 1996 and not just in the lab
• Approved for all UL test category fuels
• Extremely competitive pricing
• Entirely electro-fusible. All existing electrofusion fittings and
seals are compatible
• Can be installed using standard UPP installation tools
• Welded polyethylene boot replaces degradable rubber test
boot
• Sliding reducer for easy inline joints and primary testing
PetroTechnik has a new UPP
polyethylene tank access
chamber. The riser section
is electro-fused to the base
meaning no multiple boltholes
and foam gaskets. This
fusion system also reduces
installation time. No scraping
or cleaning of the surfaces
to be fused is needed as the
components are packaged
with protective covering.
With the EW8 welder the
electrofusion process can
be performed in just nine
minutes.
The base of the chamber is
425mm (16.7") high allowing
for easy installation of
pipework before the riser is
fused on. The burial depth of
the complete system is 1.75
meters (5 ¾ feet) maximum
or 1.3 meters (4 ¼ feet)
minimum.
Unlike other chambers
all 110 mm (4") fi ll
First installation of UPP in China
Jan Ageheim is quietly
unassuming. He doesn’t take
much credit for inventing
and pioneering what was to
become a world-class product.
He believes that UPP was
almost discovered by accident.
As a student in 1969, he spent
time looking at corroded
steel pipe and analysing its
problems. He felt strongly
that plastic pipe was the
solution and, with the right
formula, it could easily be
made fi t for hazardous fuels.
But, at that time, he was told
that he didn’t know what he
was talking about.
Jan then bowed to resistance
and dropped the idea until
he started working as a
consultant to Shell in the
early 1980’s. Shell took the
right interest and gave him
the go ahead to install UPP.
He gained product approval
from the Swedish authorities
and the fi rst installation of
Next came resistance from
installers. UPP was more
fl exible, easier to use and was
going to cut installation time
dramatically. Jan wasn’t to be
stopped this time.
In 1985, UPP achieved its
fi rst installation outside
Scandinavia and in 1991 Shell
gave approval for the first
installation in the UK with the
permission of the regulator
for Greater London, Jamie
Thompson.
It was when UPP was
being presented to the
Association for Petroleum
& Explosives
Administration
(APEA) in the
UK, that Jan met
PetroTechnik’s
founder and
Chief Executive
Offi cer, John
Boudry. John was
then the managing
director of the UK’s
leading tank company,
Cookson & Zinn.
John left Cookson
& Zinn to form
PetroTechnik in 1991,
the company that was
to act as the wheels to
get UPP accepted and
distributed around the
world.
PetroTechnik in the early days. PetroTechnik was formed by John Boudry in 1991 to distribute
UPP around the world.
What a company
PetroTechnik is today! Over
eight million metres of UPP
pipe have now been used
in over 30,000 installations
across 134 countries.
When asked why UPP has
been so successful, Jan is quite
clear with the answer.
“It is because major oil
companies believe in UPP.
They trust our product and
our company. We’ve built the
business to take responsibility.
We’ve never taken short cuts
and always looked at the long
term.
“Listening hard to feedback
from the field, both
customers and installers, has
been critical,” he continues.
“We’ve kept on our toes
to understand their needs
and to support them in
their different markets. It’s
all about being fl exible in
your thinking. We meet so
many different cultures, it is
important to understand that
there’s not only one way to
do things.
“PetroTechnik has an excellent
engineering department with
very professional, very skilled
people. They safeguard the
product and make sure it
continues to meet current
and future needs”.
With regard to manufacturing,
Jan also believes that the
PetroTechnik’s strategy to
be fl exible has been the right
one. The company has never
had local restraints but it has
always kept production close
to its users.
When asked about the future,
Jan has a happy glint in his
eye. UPP will just get better
and better but for more
information about that, you
will just have to watch this
space!
