Sport in 2012
TAS - Toward Developing
the Whole Child
TAS sport is a significant part of what
Redeemer is and this year Redeemer
begins with a new leadership team as
well as holding the Presidency of the TAS
association. To the uninitiated or new
families of Redeemer, TAS stands for
‘The Associated Schools’ and is a Saturday
morning sporting program operating
from Years 5 through to 12.
TAS began in the 1950s with the first
sporting activity involving St Peters
Lutheran College and Marist College
Ashgrove. Over the decades TAS has
changed dramatically at times in terms of
school memberships, with St Pauls and
St Columban’s being the only remaining
schools from the original competition.
Today TAS is effectively divided into two
sections, Junior TAS (JTAS), involving
Years 5 through to 7, and TAS covering
the secondary school years. The JTAS
competition is ‘sport based’ which means

Redeemer Junior School and Middle
School students could be in a number of
different locations across Brisbane playing
sport. TAS or Senior TAS on the other
hand is a ‘school based’ competition
which operates on a ‘home and away’
structure.
Participation in the co-curricular
programs of Redeemer has always been
an enrolment expectation, due to
Redeemer’s goal of developing the whole
child. While winning in sport is an
outcome that the vast majority of us
enjoy, this is not Redeemer’s primary goal
in offering a sports program; rather goals
such as improving personal fitness,
participation, commitment to peers and
the wider school community, as well as
developing resilience under the pressure
of competition are only some of the many
benefits of participating in TAS sport.
The information presented in this article
is only a brief introduction. Families who

Mr Arnold comes to his position with
extensive experience in Physical Education
teaching, sports administration and a
variety of coaching qualifications.
Mr Arnold’s experiences include time
spent in Japan as a coach and
administrator. Mr Andrews takes up his
role with extensive Redeemer TAS
experience in both JTAS and TAS as both
a coach and coordinator of a variety of
sports.
I wish all the very best to Redeemer’s
sporting teams this year and encourage
parents to support their students and
staff, who aim to engage and develop
Redeemer students through sport.

Congratulations to Wilson House for taking out first place at both
the Senior School and Middle School Interhouse Swimming Carnivals
over the past week! Lavarack House’s record of twelve consecutive
wins over the past 15 years at the Senior School Interhouse
Swimming Carnival was triumphantly replaced by Wilson House

Senior School House
Barbecues
All parents in the
Senior School should
have received a letter
in the past week
inviting them to a
House family
barbecue to welcome them to the new
school year. The details are listed below
and parents are asked to fill in the slip
attached to the letter and return it to the
college by Friday 10 February for catering
purposes. Copies of the letter are
available from the Senior School Office
and both parents and their children are
invited to come and meet Home Group
teachers, House Leaders and other
families from the House. In recent years
we have had over 600 turn up over the
two nights!

invited to attend tuition sessions for any

Middle School Parents’
Welcome Evening
Invitation to all parents of students in
Years 6, 7 and 8 - Middle School Parents'
Welcome Evening will be held on Monday
20 February, starting in the chapel at
7.00pm and moving to the Middle School
class rooms. This is an opportunity to meet
your child's Home Group teacher and to
ask questions about Middle School 2012.
It is anticipated that the evening will
conclude before 9.00pm. Please note that
students are not expected to attend this
evening.
Year 8 Scholarships 2013
Redeemer Lutheran College is offering up
to ten scholarships for Year 8 students in
2013.
� Academic Scholarships: Up to five
Academic Scholarships at 50% of the
Year 8 tuition fee will be available for
academically gifted students on the basis
of reports and assessment.
� All Rounder Scholarships: Up to five
All Rounder Scholarships at 50% of the
Year 8 tuition fee will be available to
students able to contribute to at least
two major areas of college life.
Parents interested in their child obtaining
a scholarship will need to register for their
child to sit an EduTest Scholarship Testing

Parent Handbook 2012
Please access our website to read the
updated Parent Handbook for 2012. This
is essential reading for new and
continuing parents of the college. It
contains important information on
policies and procedures.
Please note that there have been changes
to the school uniform section that
families will need to familiarise
themselves with. The pale-grey Senior
School skirt is no longer allowed to be
worn. If you have this skirt at home it will
need to be replaced otherwise your
student may be issued with a uniform
detention.

Sadly, a number of our instrumental tutors
have chosen to pursue various other
musical endeavours in 2012. We will
certainly miss their enthusiasm and
commitment to Redeemer Music.

Redeemer community will make them

Our new Junior School Office is now open! The new Junior School
Office is much more accessible to parents and is located at the very
front of the Junior School car park (Gate 3) near the pedestrian

P & F Annual General Meeting
The Parents and Friends Annual General Meeting will be held on
Monday 5 March, commencing at 7.00pm in the P & F Meeting
Room (SA31) located in SA Block near the pond. We would like to
invite everyone to come and get involved. All positions, President,
Vice, Treasurer and Secretary, plus Fair Convenor and Parent Council
representative will be up for nomination.
Remember
The story of Noah and the flood is generally known by all
regardless of church affiliation. From the earliest years of my
life I can remember this story being told in Sunday school,
just about every year. We could enter into discussion over
various aspects of the biblical account, namely; Was the
flood world-wide or localised? How many animals did Noah
actually take into the Ark? How long did they spend on the
Ark? Have remains of the Ark really been found, and if so
what of it; does it really prove the story’s truth?
In this day and age, we as a society generally like to find out
the truth whether it is religion, politics or Santa Claus. As
Pontius Pilate once said “What is truth?”
In one dimension, the story is about God destroying evil and
saving good. Not a bad understanding at all but I think a
little shallow theologically. Another thought may be that it
is a story of one man’s faith, abiding strong despite the
ridicule, not knowing the future and being asked to do some
unusual tasks that took a long time.
Perhaps you may agree with me that the story is really about
God’s “saving act”. An Ark that cradles His creation to new
life is a story that foreshadows another. Jesus becomes our
“Ark”, and saves us all for a new life with God, both present
and future. Instead of creation contained in the Ark, it is the
Creator contained in the Ark of a human body.
God puts His rainbow in the sky and says, “I will remember
my covenant…” (Gen 9:15). This is unusual. Does God
forget? No. The Hebrew word that translates to “remember”
is actually stronger than “recall” or “recollect”. It means to
make the past event actively present in what we do now.
Hence, Christ’s saving act is God “remembering”.
When we participate in the Lord’s Supper (communion),
Jesus’ words “..do this in remembrance of me”, makes a call
on our lives. We are called to make Jesus’ body and blood,
active in our lives today, not just recall that He died for us.
We are to make salvation an active ingredient in the mix of
life. I hope we all remember and have a great year.
