He IS risen.
It's an
ongoing
reality, not
an over-and
-done-with
one-time
event.
William Sangster,
famous British church leader,
suffered from
increasing paralysis
which finally prevented him
from even being able to talk.
On his last Easter before he
died, he wrote:
“How terrible
to wake up on Easter
and have no voice to
shout, ‘HE IS RISEN’,
far worse,
to have a voice and
not to want to shout!”
He is risen indeed!
Every Easter, pastor says “Christ is risen!”
and we respond with “He is risen indeed!”
These words have been said as a greeting
for centuries in the Christian church
around the world. The most important
person in history is Jesus Christ. The
events of his life are the most influential;
in particular his actual death by crucifixion,
and most important of all, his actual
resurrection. If Christ is still dead then all
of Christendom is a hoax and all of
humanity doomed to the dust.
The resurrection is so important and
foundational to Christianity that it has
been targeted for the most relentless
attacks. Frank Morison, a lawyer,
determined to disprove the resurrection
and thereby undermine Christianity. The
result of his exhaustive investigations was
his conversion to Christ and the
publication of his book: Who Moved the
Stone which decisively demonstrates the
overwhelming evidence for the
resurrection.
A skeptical university lecturer, Josh
McDowell, determined to disprove
Christianity by investigating evidence
against the resurrection. The result was
his conversion to Christ and publication of
the monumental: Evidence That Demands
a Verdict which conclusively presents
documentation and evidence upon
evidence substantiating the historical
truth, factual accuracy, archeological
evidence, fulfilled prophecies, and other
indisputable evidences which support the
fact of the resurrection of Christ from the
dead.
Simon Greenleaf, who developed the
Harvard Law School, is recognized as one
of the most skilled legal minds ever
produced. He is the top authority on
what constitutes sound evidence. Simon
Greenleaf made a thorough and
exhaustive examination of the objective
evidence and the testimony of the four
gospel writers, Matthew, Mark, Luke and
John. In his book: The Testimony of the
Evangelists (Baker, 1874) he concluded:
“It was therefore impossible that they
could have persisted in affirming the
truths they have narrated, had not Jesus
actually risen from the dead, and had
they not known this fact as certainly as
they knew any other fact.” Simon
Greenleaf declared that any court of law,
if presented with the evidence of the
resurrection, would have to give a verdict
in favor of the integrity and accuracy of
the gospel writers and the fact of the
resurrection.
One of the most popular books ever
written, and most successful films ever
produced, Ben Hur, was a result of a
skeptical challenge to General Lew
Wallace to the authenticity of Christ’s
resurrection, and a careful examination
of the evidence.
So this Sunday (and every Sunday during
the Easter season) when you participate
in the greeting “He is risen! He is risen
indeed!” be aware of how important the
fact of Christ’s resurrection is. If you feel
like shouting with joy, go ahead, do it —
“He is risen! He is risen indeed!”
Everyone of the disciples suffered severe persecution.
All but John died as martyrs for their faith.
Would you die for a lie

More from Chris
Chris Driesbach, a talented song writer, musician, recording artist, performer, and — best of
all — WELS Christian, will continue enhancing our worship on Easter. He’s on tour across
the U.S. from his home in New Orleans — a member of Crown of Life Lutheran there.
Chris has used his talents to bring a special message through music to our Maundy Thursday
and Good Friday services already. He will provide more music this Sunday. Chris will sing his
own compositions at both services on Easter. While brunch is served, Chris will serve up
more of his songs for our enjoyment.
Chris has recorded five CDs which will be available for purchase while he’s at Mt. Calvary.
Titles include “Hymns for Him” (comfort for you), “Let Christ Be Known”, and “Feed Your
Faith” (songs for kids of all ages). You can listen to snip-its of some songs at Chris’ website
http://www.chrisdriesbach.com/Music.html. You can also purchase his CDs through Northwestern
Publishing House year round.
Festival half
The festival half of the Church Year began
with Advent and Christmas. The second
high point is Holy Week, concluding with
Easter. Because of Christ’s death on the
cross we can rejoice that our sins are paid
for – we are forgiven, justified by faith.
Because of Christ’s resurrection from the
dead we can rejoice in the prospect of eternal
life.
The remainder of the festival half of the
Church year builds on Holy Week.
Because of Christ’s ascension we can
know that he has all authority and that
his Great Commission will be accomplished
on earth.
Because of the coming of the Holy
Spirit at Pentecost we do not need to
trust in our own abilities, but in his
power alone. “Not by might, nor by
power, but by my Spirit says the Lord.”
We serve a risen Saviour! Death is defeated.
Christ has risen – victorious over
death, hell, Satan and the grave. “Jesus
Christ is the resurrection and the Life. He
who believes in Christ, though he may die,
yet shall he live” (John 11:25).

Reaching out to one and all
The first meeting of the Outreach Committee
was held on March 26. After
opening with prayer, all committee members
committed to helping the school
achieve its goal of gaining new students
in the preschool and elementary school
for the 2012-2013 school year. A number
of suggestions were discussed. The
strongest were canvassing the neighborhood
for at least two days and a booth at
the Shasta District Fair in June.
Pastor and I explained the “new” FRAN
evangelism outreach program to the
committee. FRAN stands for Friends,
Relatives, Acquaintances and Neighbors.
While new to Mt. Calvary, FRAN has been
used at other WELS churches very successfully.
Our first FRAN outreach tool is
the Easter postcards that were handed
out Palm Sunday. Members of the congregation
were asked to use the postcards
to invited their friends, relatives,
acquaintances and neighbors to worship
this Easter.
Committee tasks were discussed and divided
up. Danielle Van Boekel will look
into fund raising projects to support outreach.
Debbie Sprague discussed reaching
out to veterans with PTSD. These special
vets have trouble dealing with a in a
traditional worship setting, but they still
need to hear the saving gospel. Miriam
Waterman will do mailings. Kim Simpson
will track and follow up with visitors.
Naomi Henkel will attend to our printing
needs. Dan Douglas will keep the committee
informed about the school’s
needs. Kathy Wallace will concentrate on
Food for the Soul which, unfortunately,
had to cancel their park day in March due
to bad weather. The next park day will
be April 29th at 2:00pm at South City
Park. Everyone is invited to come to the
park to reach out to the homeless —
whether you are a member of the committee
or not. Please come!
Pastor Doebler discussed the importance
of follow up with new-comers and visitors
within a 48 hour time frame. We will offer
an evangelism training class in the near
future. So you gave the Easter postcard to a
FRAN and that person comes to coming Sunday.
Is that the end of your outreach Pastor
recommends sitting with the FRAN you
invited to church, help them find their way
through the worship folder and hymnal.
Make them feel welcome!
Committee members were asked to come to
church sometime in April as though they
were visitors, not long time, involved members
—look at Mt. Calvary as though you
were seeing it for the first time. Is the signage
helpful How hard was it to find a place
to park Are strangers welcomed by one
and all or only by the greeters Do you see
something that detracts from your visit —
littered or messy pews, un-mowed lawns,
not enough worship folders, ushers busy
talking to each other, etc. etc. etc. We want
to work together to make visiting Mt. Calvary
an all around positive experience. We
can all do better at welcoming visitors!
I welcome anyone who wants to support the
Outreach Committee! We need more members
to join us, pray for us and to help
spread the gospel of our risen Lord to those
who so desperately need it. You’re welcome
to participate in our monthly meetings (next
meeting will be Tuesday, April 17 at 6:30
PM). We need participation — and we can
have fun doing it! Outreach is the purpose
of a church, to go and make disciples. I
know not everyone is an evangelist, but God
didn’t command only those with a gift for
evangelism, he commanded each believer.
Other gifts and talents can be used to enhance
evangelism. Mt. Calvary can and will
be a witness in our community. All it takes is
you to make the difference!
Watch for our new program PAYING IT FOR-
WARD coming soon! We’re also planning a
family night at the movies!
Yours in Christ,
Mark Wallace, Chairman

So many choices for one day
Saturday, April 21 offers several choices for
members of Mt. Calvary! Which one will
you choose Each activity can help your
faith grow. Each activity will enhance Mt.
Calvary’s ministry. Here are your options
for Saturday, April 21:
You can participate in the school canvas.
The School Board and Principal Douglas
need volunteers to distribute materials
about our preschool and elementary
school. Interested persons are asked to
meet at church at 10:00 AM to pick up door
hangers and receive brief directions. You
don’t have to have all the answers about
our education programs, you only have to
post a door hanger/flier at homes. It’s
easy! If you can walk, you can do this for
the Lord! It’s time to “walk the walk”.
Have fun! (The same distribution will also
take place on Thursday, April 19 starting at
5:30 PM.)
All women (and men too!) of Mt. Calvary
can arise early and drive to Apostles Lutheran
in San Jose for the LWMS spring
rally for all the congregations in our circuit.
The rally begins at 9:00 AM with a worship
service. The featured speaker will be Pastor
Geoff Cortright of Mighty Fortress Lutheran
Church in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada.
(He was our Befriend a Mission missionary
in 2008-2009.) Pastor Cortright will
talk about the challenges and blessings of
mission work in Canada. Though his congregation
is a small one, Mighty Fortress
supports missions in Wetaskiwin, AB and
Vancouver, BC. Pastor Cortright brings a
variety of missionary experiences. He was a
summer missionary intern at the WELS mission
in Lilongwe, Malawi in 2006 — which is
where he met his wife, Alica. The rally concludes
at 3:00 PM. A sign up sheet is
posted on the bulletin board in the church
entry. If you are going, please sign the
sheet so Apostles can better plan for the
rally. Directions to Apostles are also
posted. Carpool with friends and enjoy a
day of inspiration! Once you attend an
LWMS rally, it's easy to get hooked on
LWMS!
There’s also A Time for Everything on April
21 — a one-day women’s retreat at St.
Mark’s Lutheran in Citrus Heights. The special
guest speaker certainly has lived that
theme! Cindi Holman is known to some Mt.
Calvary members because she taught kindergarten
at St. Mark’s for 15 years while her
husband was principal. They raised two sons
in Sacramento. Cindi regularly played the
pipe organ for worship at St. Mark’s. A gifted
organist, she also directed their adult choir
for years. The couple left St. Mark’s to establish
a Lutheran elementary school in Plzen,
Czech Republic. After returning to the States
and ministries at St. Mark’s, Jim is now an
assistant professor of Education and Director
of Teacher Education at Wisconsin Lutheran
College. Cindi was recently appointed to a
brand new position at our WELS synodical
office — national coordinator of early childhood
ministry. So you can see that Cindi
has successfully done many
things in her life. You can
learn a lot from her about
making time for every activity.
Registration forms are
available on the bulletin
board in the church entry.
There is a $35 fee for the
day to cover food and
materials. Laurie Larson
is coordinating
Mt. Calvary ladies
who would like to
carpool to Citrus
Heights. Talk to
Translation study continues
The Translation Evaluation Committee
(TEC) is coordinating a new study of three
different English Bible translations that
WELS could consider for use in its publications.
In this study, more than 100 pastors will
participate in a side-by-side comparison
of the New International Version 2011,
the Holman Christian Standard Bible, and
the English Standard Version. Reviewers
from three different groups—synod leaders,
attendees of the translation workshop
held at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary
(WLS) in January, and pastors who
have been in the ministry less than 10
years—will be assigned a section of the
Bible to evaluate, using translation principles
discussed at the January workshop.
“It will be helpful for all participants plus
assure the synod that we’re trying to do
due diligence by looking at all these versions,”
says Rev. Paul Wendland, WLS
president and TEC chairman. “It also will
give us an in-depth understanding of the
strengths and the weaknesses of all of
these versions.”
TEC members decided to put together
this study after a significant number of
people at the January workshop voiced
strong concerns about the NIV 2011, the
translation that the TEC recommended
using in WELS publications at the 2011
convention. Wendland says the TEC
wants to continue the discussion given
the concerns expressed. “Conversation
Proceeds from pies
Mt. Calvary’s LWMS thanks everyone who
donated or purchased pies at our recent
Pies for Proceeds. Special thanks to so
many people who brought those wonderful
pies! So many pies were donated this
year that we were able to share left over
pies with Food for the Soul and provide
dessert for our last Lenten supper!
Total proceeds received for mission work
from the pies was $338. This will be
has more centered around the NIV and its
merits and lack of merits,” says Wendland.
“This will focus our attention differently—if
not the NIV, then what”
The committee also recently learned that
Northwestern Publishing House, through
fair-use laws, will be able to use the NIV
1984 in most of its publications longer than
it expected, giving WELS more time to systematically
evaluate other viable translations.
“If a study like this is carefully made, I
think it will give everybody a feeling of
comfort and peace when the final decision
is made that we really looked at this very
carefully and everyone has had a chance to
think it through,” says Wendland.
The study is scheduled to be completed in
August.
The districts will be voting on which translation
to use in the synod’s publications at
the 2012 district conventions in June using
a ballot prepared by the synod president
and vice presidents. With the support of
the Conference of Presidents, they are considering
an option on the ballot to delay the
decision until the 2013 synod convention. A
two-thirds majority is required for any
translation to be selected; otherwise the
issue will go to the 2013 synod convention.
to Mormons and Central Africa
The WELS presidium has established the
ballot that will be used for voting on the
issue of Bible translations at this summer’s
district conventions. (The AZ-CA
District Convention is June 12-14 at Mesa,
AZ.)
The ballot will include four choices, including
the English Standard Version
(ESV), the Holman Christian Standard Bible
(HCSB), the New International Version
(NIV11), as well as a ballot choice that
would delay a final decision on which
translation is to be used in synodical publications
until the synod convention in
2013.
Ready to grapple with current events
seen in the light of Scripture
Tired of the same old devotional books
All these topics — and much more — will
be covered by a book fair on Sundays,
April 29 and May 6 at Mt. Calvary. Pastor
Doebler has hand selected a wide variety
of books that will help members grow:
in faith,
in our ability to share our faith,
In our understanding of God’s Word
and applying it to life on earth
In deeper comprehension of biblical
doctrine
In our personal and family devotional
life.
If you like to SEE a book before you buy
it, if the one paragraph descriptions
online drive you crazy, well, then you
need to be first in line at our book fair!
The district conventions will receive an updated
report from the Translation Evaluation
Committee (TEC — see article on page
6 for most recent news), which has been
asked to continue its work in evaluating the
translations under consideration. The conventions
will also receive a report from the
Translation Feasibility Committee, which is
considering the feasibility and desirability of
producing a new translation.
Source: WELS Together
You’ll be able to examine each book up
close and personal. Read a page or two or
three to answer your question “Is this the
one I want” All the books are published
by the WELS publishing firm, Northwestern
Publishing House.
Orders will be taken on April 29 and May
6. Orders placed at that time will receive a
10% “group” discount! What a deal! All
books ordered will be shipped to the
church where you can pick up your selections
a couple weeks after the book fair.
May I have your order, please
Taking salvation to Muslims
The Outreach to Muslims Committee (OTM)
is addressing the need of a growing mission
field right in North America—the increasing
Muslim immigrant population.
The OTM has called Rev. Pieter Reid as the
Muslim outreach coordinator, a new position
tasked to identify concentrations of
Muslim populations in the North America
where a WELS presence exists, choose a location
in which outreach efforts would be
intensive, develop a plan to carry out an outreach
effort, and then implement the plan.
Reid, who has nearly 20 years of experience
ministering to a Muslim population, is currently
considering the call.
Rev. Joel Spaude, the OTM chairman, says,
“If WELS wants to do work amongst Muslims,
then we have to be serious about it.
We have to commit to a missionary on the
street, which is really what this program is
going to do.”
The spiritual need is great. Like so many who
haven’t yet heard the gospel message,
Spaude says, Muslims haven’t experienced
the freedom and blessing of Christ’s love
and salvation. “The Muslim faith, like so
many other work-righteous religions, and
even more so, cultivates fear—fear of
their soul’s salvation because it’s all based
on obeying Allah,” says Spaude, “and even
then you don’t know if he’s going to let
you in heaven.”
Spaude explains that the fear of Allah is
only part of it. Those who leave the religion
can be ostracized and even threatened
by the community. “It’s going to be slowgoing
initially, especially with results. Then
you have the challenge of trying to provide
some support network for the people who
do leave [the Muslim religion],” says
Spaude.
He continues, “I’m confident that when we
bring the gospel of Jesus to people—even
in a challenging environment like the Muslims
community—this gospel is going to
bear fruit.”
Operating under the Joint Mission Council,
this new Outreach to Muslim program
will be supported by special gifts.
Another way to support Anthony
Anthony Fitzgerald has received a full academic
scholarship for his first year at Luther
Prep which he will be attending this fall. The
Fitzgeralds have to cover the cost Anthony’s
room and board. To assist the Fitzgeralds,
several creative fundraising events are happening.
Several members have already signed up on
the bulletin board in the church entry for
Anthony to “work around the house” this
spring. He’s available to do projects inside
or outside your home. Check for open dates
and grab his services while he’s still available!
Lindy Jacobson, owner of Bibles Books and
More — and Anthony’s grandmother — is
also raising funds for Anthony. On the third
Thursday of April, May, and June, Lindy will
donate 10% of that day’s proceeds to Luther
Prep for Anthony. Please come into the
story on Thursday, April 19 and buy what
you would normally buy — cards, books,
Bibles, games, gifts. That’s all you have to
do. Lindy will take care of the rest. Bibles
Books and More is located at 2025 Hilltop
Drive, in the block south of Marie Callender’s
on the same side of street. Be sure to
visit Bibles Books and
More again on May 17
and June 21 to support
Anthony’s quest for a
Christian education!

Spring is a time for new life. Trees bud,
grass turns green, flowers bloom. We hear
our first robin’s song and rejoice that winter
is finally over.
Yet Spring has nothing on Easter. The authors
this month remind us of the new life
we Christians now have because of that
first resurrection morning.
In his devotion, Pastor Michael Woldt
looks at “before Easter” and “after
Easter” pictures of the first disciples
and of us.
Pastor Paul Brug explores how Jesus as
true man died and then conquered
death, giving us new hope in this life
and in life everlasting.
Pastor Karl Walther assures us of the
reality of Christ’s resurrection from the
dead and reminds us that because Jesus
rose we will rise too.
That theme is expanded on the back
over as Pastor Mark Cares talks about
the glories that await us in heaven,
glories we will experience because
of what Jesus has done.
The wraparound cover this month
uses the Christian symbol of the butterfly
to depict that new life. God
bless your Easter celebration and
your new life in Christ.
Easter is a day for singing
Mt. Calvary’s Easter services this year will
include many well-known, old hymns and a
couple newer favorite hymns as well. Our
7:30 AM service will begin with the congregation
singing “The Lamb”. This hymn from
our Supplement was written by Rev. Gerald
P. Coleman. He is a man of many talents:
pastor, teacher, author, composer, organist
and conductor. He currently is a pastor and
Director of Music at Christ Lutheran Church
in Washington, DC. (Pastor Coleman is a
native Washingtonian.) Rev. Coleman described
writing “The Lamb” this way:
“The composition of “The Lamb” began with
an image. In 1985, fellow seminarian James
Disney (now pastor at St. John’s Lutheran in
Buffalo, MN) mounted an exhibition of his
paintings. One of those paintings was entitled
“The Lamb of God.” The painting shows
a white lamb on a black background. The
legs are tied and the Lamb seems to be still
except for the impression that it is offering
its neck.
I confess that the text, tune, and setting
were all written during a three-hour summer
school class at Concordia Seminary. I found
myself sitting in class and contemplating the
Lamb of God. I wanted to bring together
the sacrificial suffering of the Lamb and the
vision of the Lamb upon the throne by portraying
both through the lens of triumph. In
a departure from my normal technique, I
first wrote the entire tune, ending each
stanza with the refrain, “Worthy is the Lamb
whose death makes me his own! The Lamb
is reigning on his throne.” Then I began to
experiment with word choices and rhymes.
Before the
class period
was over, I had
completed text,
tune, and setting.
I immediately
went to
my office to
begin the usual
laborious revisions.
After a
painful and
confusing hour, it came to me with great
clarity that would be no revisions. It is the
only piece in my oeuvre of which I can say
this, and I always considered it an inspiration,
as if God were moving through my
pencil. I never changed a note or word.
During the week-long break from summer
school courses, I had to go to Nebraska to
play for an ordination. My dear friend
Frank E Winter III invited me to come with
him to spend the week with his family at
their home in West Point, Nebraska.
Chip’s mother, Carla, was a fine church
musician. In gratitude for the Winter family’s
generosity to me, I named the tune
WINTER. As I said to Carla at the time,
“Some people get flowers: you get a
hymn!”
The hymn begins with a clear and somewhat
haunting reference to the Abraham
and Isaac narrative of Genesis 22. Stanza
two asks earth and heaven to praise
(Hebrews 10:1-18) the sacrifice which
brings to an end the system of ritual sacrifices
previously instituted by God. Stanza
three is a reflection of the verse of “O
Dearest Jesus” which proclaims “The Shepherd
dies for sheep who love to wander.”
It also proclaims the solidarity of Christ
who stands with the fallen world in its brokenness,
and fulfills the law for the salvation
of that that fallen world. It opens a
view of the crucifixion as coronation.
Stanza four, though it has numerous biblical
roots, is actually a statement of Luther’s
doctrine of the “Great Exchange”.
Before the final refrain, we are drawn into
the Easter event. “Worthy is the lamb
whose death makes me his own! The
Lamb is reigning on his throne!”
So Mt. Calvary members and friends, get
up early on Easter. Get to church on time.
“The Lamb” will be the opening hymn at
the 7:30 AM Sonrise Service. Sing your
heart out!
There’s a lot of stuff around us that the
world labels “art”, but seldom do you see a
piece such as the 12’x40’ mural commissioned
by the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas,
entitled “The Resurrection”. It depicts
Christ stepping out of the open tomb on
That is an apt and accurate description of
the life of Joseph, a key figure in the first
book of the Bible, Genesis. You can study
Joseph’s life in another online Bible class
offered through WELS. Pastor Don Patterson
from Holy Word Lutheran in Austin,
Texas will discuss Joseph’s fascinating life
and what it means for us. The study begins
on Wednesday, April 18 and continues for
the next three Wednesdays. The live class
will be taught twice each Wednesday, once
at 4:30 PM and again at 6:30 PM (Pacific
Time), allowing people from different time
zones across the U.S. to participate. Each
session will last about one hour. The live
stream address is
WELSAdultDiscipleship. During the live
stream, there will be times when Pastor
Patterson lectures, and other times when
groups watching the stream will be able to
discuss matters further. So ask some
friends to join you for Bible study — or
work through the lessons on your own.
You can watch a recorded version anytime
