Why choose FIC
Study a university-designed program that suits your needs, on a university campus, with qualified
lecturers, in smaller classes with longer teaching sessions – and FIC guarantees you entry into
second year university.*
University-designed programs
and progression to SFU
The University Transfer Program (UTP)
Stage I is designed to provide a bridge
between high school and university. It
will prepare you for university studies.
UTP Stage II programs are based on the
first year of the equivalent SFU Bachelor
degree programs listed on pages 11,
12 and 13. You will obtain guaranteed
transfer to these SFU programs when you
have completed the specified courses
and met the Grade Point Average (GPA)
specified for your chosen program.*
University Campus with full
access to university facilities
FIC is located on SFU’s Burnaby Campus.
You will enjoy full access to university
facilities and services, including
libraries, computer laboratories, sports
and recreation facilities, on-campus
accommodation, health services
and career services.
Academic support
and tutorials
FIC provides learning support in the form
of free tutorial classes and and regular
one-to-one meetings with your lecturers.
The tutorials focus particularly on building
academic English, Mathematics and
Computing skills. As well as academic
support, FIC provides excellent personal
support in a range of services to ensure
that you are able to reach your goals.
Qualified lecturers, quality
education and additional
instruction time
A quality education is the first step
to a successful future. FIC programs
are designed to help you fully reach
your potential. They are delivered and
moderated by highly qualified lecturers
that are approved by SFU to ensure that
the highest standards of teaching are
maintained at all times. In keeping with
our supportive approach, FIC provides
more teaching hours per course. Instead
of traditional three-hour teaching blocks,
FIC classes are four-hour sessions.
This extra academic contact allows
you to fully develop your knowledge
and understanding of each course.
Small classes
Classes have a maximum of 35 students,
often with an average of only 25 students.
Small classes provide a personal learning
environment and more opportunities
to ask your teacher questions.
On campus accommodation
As a student of FIC, you may choose to
live in SFU Residences at the Burnaby
Campus. The new residences include a
dining hall and a meal plan.
and cost of living
FIC represents a reasonable tuition
fees combined with an affordable cost
of living make FIC a great option for
students seeking a quality education.
Flexible start dates
Whenever your results are released,
there is an intake for you. FIC provides
the flexibility of three intakes:
» January » May » September
These dates coincide with SFU’s intake
dates, so no matter when you finish your
program at FIC, there is a new semester
at SFU beginning immediately afterwards.
Document assistance
FIC staff and their representatives will
assist you as required to obtain a Study
Permit for studies in Canada. We will
also help with visa extensions, Medical
Services Plan applications and student ID
cards once you have arrived in Canada.
* Entry into second year at SFU is dependent on students completing the FIC UTP Stage II program and obtaining the specified Grade
Point Average (GPA), and being formally admitted to the SFU program (subject to changes in SFU’s Admissions policy).
The best place for you to study.
Canada is an exciting and safe destination for international
students. It is a diverse country with a strong tradition of
welcoming people from around the world. As a result, Canada
hosts many festivals featuring music, heritage, art, jazz, theatre,
food and sports events from many different cultures.
Canada has one of the best standards
of living in the world. It is internationally
recognized for its natural attractions,
quality of life and world-class cities. As
a student, you will have the chance to
explore all that Canada has to offer.
Canada offers you the opportunity to
access a wide range of high quality
educational programs. A Canadian
degree will help you to achieve your
career objectives and fulfill your
personal aspirations.
Vancouver is one of the world’s great
cities. Uniquely situated between
ocean and mountains, Vancouver
is Canada’s third largest city and
is home to an ethnically diverse
population of over two million people.
Recognized as one of the most livable
cities in the world, Vancouver is a safe and
energetic city of eclectic neighborhoods,
vibrant cultural events and unparalleled
opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Whether you’re interested in exploring the
downtown core, experiencing the lively
nightlife or attending world-class theatre,
music and dance performances,
you’ll find countless opportunities
to get out and have fun.
Chosen as the host city for the 2010
Winter Olympics, Vancouver is ideal
for athletic and outdoor pursuits. Ski
and snowboard on the North Shore
mountains, which are just a short drive
from downtown Vancouver and FIC. Or
drive 90 minutes north to world-famous
Whistler Blackcomb ski and snowboard
resorts. Closer to home, you can kayak,
row or sail on English Bay. You can also
cycle or rollerblade around the seawall
or on the city’s extensive bike trails.
With our mild winters (average
temperature 8˚C/46˚F) and temperate
summers (average temperature
23˚C/73˚F), it’s easy to make the most of
the city’s natural beauty and recreational
will enjoy the high level of personal
freedom that comes with living in a safe,
modern and open-minded community.
It is the ideal environment to challenge
yourself academically and personally.
And for many, it represents a lifechanging
experience and the beginning
of an exciting pathway to SFU.
The campus
FIC is located on SFU’s Burnaby Mountain campus in the
thriving and culturally diverse city of Burnaby, a 30-minute
drive from downtown Vancouver. The Burnaby campus is one
of the most awe-inspiring university settings on the continent,
offering a stunning panorama of mountains, cities, ocean and
islands from its location at the summit of 400-metre high
Burnaby Mountain.
Designed by internationally acclaimed
architect Arthur Erickson, the campus
has everything you’d expect of a major
university, yet on a scale that will make
you feel at home. The vast majority
of the 28,000 students pursue their
studies on the pedestrian-friendly
campus, which houses administrative
and academic offices, the main
library, student services, on-campus
residences, and the new UniverCity
community of residences and shops.
For students wanting to live on campus,
SFU provides fully-catered single room
accommodation as well as an on-campus
hotel where visiting family members
can stay. Buses operate between the
campus and Greater Vancouver’s
rapid transit system at the foot of
Burnaby Mountain on a regular basis.
Studying at FIC will give you access
to all of these facilities and more.
Your English language preparation
If you do not meet the minimum English language requirements for your program, we can offer you a
number of options to improve your English language proficiency.
English Classes
We recommend that all students take
an internationally recognised English
proficiency test such as IELTS or TOEFL
before coming to Canada. To enter
directly into Stage I or Stage II, all
students require an IELTS score of
5.5 or equivalent, in addition to the
required academic scores. If your
English is not yet at that level, FIC
can offer the following options:
UTP Stage I and II (Mixed)
The Mixed Program is designed
specifically for students who have
achieved an IELTS score of 5.0 (no band
less than 4.5) or equivalent. Students
at this level of English will take a limited
number of FIC academic courses
during their first semester. In addition
to the academic courses they have
selected, students will study 15 hours
per week of academic English at FIC.
After successfully completing the
Mixed Program, students continue
to take academic courses in the
following semester. Mixed Programs
follow the FIC intake schedule.
Burnaby campus of SFU, so students can
enjoy the experience of studying English
in one of Canada’s top universities,
with access to the facilities there.
Upon successful completion of the PAS
program, students are eligible to enter
FIC without providing further English
test scores, either directly into a UTP
program or a UTP Mixed Program. FIC
staff are able to offer advice regarding
the PAS application process at the
time of applying to FIC. PAS in English
programs follow the FIC intake schedule.
Off-campus ESL colleges
Our staff are able to offer advice
regarding specialist ESL colleges
in Vancouver for students with an
IELTS of less than 4.5 at the time of
applying to FIC. These ESL colleges
allow students to improve their English
language skills through intensive
English programs. Most specialist ESL
colleges have monthly intake dates.
“PAS” in English
in English is an SFU program which
provides English language training for
university-bound international students
who have achieved an IELTS score of 4.5
FIC is committed to helping students achieve their goals by providing many support services. As an
FIC student, you will have access to these services as well as the student services offered by SFU.
Study and learning support
At FIC, we understand that the transition
to university-level study can be difficult
for some students. To assist you in
developing the study skills necessary to
successfully complete your program of
study, FIC offers a variety of different
study and learning support services.
Our Student Advisors, in conjunction
with various teaching staff, run a number
of support tutorials and workshops
throughout the semester for students
who want to develop their study skills in
areas such as time management, essay
writing and examination techniques. Peer
tutoring programs also run throughout
each semester to assist students in areas
such as math and academic English. The
Student Advisors and other teaching
staff are also available for individual
or group appointments throughout the
semester if you need assistance with
assignment drafting, researching, and
referencing.International students who
need extra help with their spoken and
written English skills will also find the free
English support tutorials offered each
semester very helpful. We encourage
you to participate fully in these programs
and to contact the friendly staff at FIC
for advice and assistance as soon as
you are finding things a little difficult.
Personal support
A free and confidential advising service is
available to all FIC students. Things often
do not go the way we had planned or
sometimes problems of a personal nature
arise. An Advisor is available to meet
with you to discuss a range of problems
or concerns that you may have while
you are at FIC. If anything is preventing
you from enjoying your academic,
social or personal life, then seeing the
FIC Advisor is often a very good start
in resolving these issues. FIC students
also have access to the excellent health
and counselling services of SFU.
their UTP Stage II program and transfer
to SFU. In the information sessions, you
are provided with information about
courses and majors available, program
structure and application processes for
your chosen degree. In addition, you will
attend specifically designed orientation
sessions to help you make a successful
transition to your degree program at SFU.
or continue their program at the beginning of any semester
2. Fees are correct at the time of printing. FIC reserves the
right to vary its fees at any time without notice.
student will pay the current per course fee for each course undertaken.
4. Should it be necessary for the student to repeat
a course, the full amount is payable.
5. Any overpayment of fees will remain credited towards a student’s
account and applied against charges in a subsequent semester unless
the student has completed, cancelled or withdrawn from their program.
6. No refunds are given for tuition fees unless the student has
completed, cancelled or withdrawn from their program.
Study Permit conditions
1. For specific information on Study Permit Conditions refer to www.cic.gc.ca
2. Study Permits are usually issued for the period of the program.
Students wishing to extend their Study Permit should first consult
FIC for assistance. Students must leave Canada or seek a new
Study Permit before expiration of their current Study Permit.
then join the British Columbia Medical Services Plan while staying in Canada.
the laws of Canada and the Province of British Columbia.
thereof, of Canada or the Province of British Columbia.
English language program prior to the commencement of studies.
Deferral
Students can defer their program start date a maximum of two times.
Subsequent requests for deferral will result in the student needing to reapply.
Deferral requests must be made in writing. If a student wishes to defer their
admission until a later semester, FIC will hold the fees paid until commencement
without levying a penalty. If the student subsequently withdraws, the Fee
Refund Policy will apply as at the date FIC was advised in writing of their
withdrawal. FIC reserves the right to apply the Fee Refund Policy to the date
of the initial deferral. FIC reserves the right to not approve deferral requests.
FIC received advice regarding the leave of absence. If the student
applies for a leave of absence from the fifth week of the semester,
will only be approved for illness or compassionate reasons.
Students in their first semester of study may not defer their program
a binding contract is created between the student and FIC.
3. Notification of cancellation or withdrawal from course(s), or withdrawal
or deferral from a program of study must be made in writing to FIC.
4. Students who dispute FIC’s decision regarding a refund, have access
to an independent grievance resolution process. This does not
circumscribe the student’s right to pursue other legal remedies or
take further action under Canada’s consumer protection laws.
5. In case of cancellation or withdrawal, the cancellation fee (and
administration charge if relevant) will be calculated as shown in the
table below.
6. In case of deferral, the fees will be retained by FIC until
commencement of studies. If the student subsequently withdraws,
the Fee Refund Policy will apply as at the date FIC was advised
in writing of their withdrawal. FIC reserves the right to apply
the Fee Refund Policy to the date of the initial deferral.
7. Where a Study Permit renewal is rejected due to a breach in Study
Permit conditions, a student must withdraw from FIC and the
any refund of fees. Any fee refund is wholly at the discretion of FIC.
at its discretion. If a student is unable to enroll in a similar program
or course(s) at FIC and the enrollment is cancelled, all fees will be
