Late Promise<br />

Since crouched in the berried thickets<br />
since hay bales were hoisted to make-believe<br />
since the last dusk walk out of the sog swelter swamp<br />
since the path trudged tugging the warped toboggan home<br />
I have hardly rested<br />
so much work there was to be done<br />
to become one with the labeled and runged world<br />
to be in hot pursuit to not falter to marry and raise offspring<br />
to answer politely to vote correctly to do in moderation and be wise<br />
I have hardly rested<br />
and so since I am tired I choose<br />
less and what's been forgotten<br />
choose late walks cold and pink hued<br />
risk my cheek to rough bark to stay long enough<br />
to stuff pockets with scraps stones nuts rubbed a slick sheen<br />
I mean to hide out<br />
in apple gnarl elm island and log spoil<br />
holes deep to fit into snow piled to live in<br />
high limbs to dangle from on a bent-fendered<br />
blue bike breakneck downhill hands-off singing<br />
I mean to hide out.<br />
