<strong>Gò0dNews</strong> for Seniors A Winter Walk by Jamie Nichols One chilly winter evening, just as the sun had started to dip behind the mountain tops, there once was a little girl on a walk with her grandmother. Grandmother didn’t walk very fast, but the little girl didn’t mind. She just loved being near her grandmother as the wind teased the edges of their coat collars and whispered through the trees. As they walked down one of their favorite pathways, the little girl ran ahead a bit and clapped her hands in delight. As Grandmother got closer, she saw that her grandchild had found a rose. The scarlet blossom peeked out from underneath a small bush, clinging to a worn fence post. “Grandmother!” the young girl cried out. “I found your favorite!” It surprised Grandmother to see the delicate bloom still thriving through the bitter, cold night. Then, in that moment, she realized the rose survived the harsh elements because of the shelter surrounding it. The rose was a vibrant celebration of life the little girl discovered by accident. She smiled and hugged her excited granddaughter. Thinking of all the beauty she had been blessed to experience through her life, Grandmother looked at the rose. Her smile broadened. Every stage of that rose’s life was beautiful, just as hers had been. Hope filled the grandmother's heart as she thought of the beautiful stages of life she would experience in the future, and that her happy granddaughter would also experience life’s beautiful stages in the times ahead. As we start a fresh, new year, let’s all take time to be thankful for our past journeys. And may our hearts be filled with happiness and hope as we look toward the new year to come. “ ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’ ” (Jer. 29:11 NIV). 28 // January 2015
