Sanctity of Human Life
Observance
by Beth Henderson
January is a month of new beginnings. It is also
the month when we celebrate the sanctity of
human life in this country. This year, Sanctity of
Human Life Sunday is January 18, a day that will
be recognized in churches across our country. This
will be the thirty-first anniversary of such celebrations
that began with a proclamation by President
Ronald Reagan in 1984. And while the Pro-life
Movement whole-heartedly supports this recognition
of life, especially as it pertains to the rights of
the unborn, there are many, including our current
president, who do not.
We know, however, that the mere words and
whims of man will never stand against the edicts
of Almighty God. And let’s face it, God is pro-life.
God is so pro-life that He not only created mankind,
He created mankind “in His own image,”
(Gen. 1:27 NKJV). Then, He told those first, Godbreathed-into-beings
to “be fruitful and increase in
number” (Gen. 1:28 NIV).
God didn’t stop there! He provided lush surroundings,
food, water, and all the things needed
to sustain life. He clothed them and came to them
in His own sorrow to begin a work of reconciliation.
He spoke to them, as He speaks to us, through
His Word, through His miracles, through His
creation. He sent prophets and preachers to tell of
His love for the world. He sent His own son so that
we “might have life and have it more abundantly”
(John 10:10 KJV). He sent His Spirit to guide us,
comfort us, heal us, and give us hope.
I’m glad that we have the freedom in this country
to set aside days to talk about what’s right and
wrong when it comes to abortion, euthanasia, the
death penalty, and suicide. But I am overjoyed to
know that my God has been talking about those issues
from the beginning of time. His plan is for us
22 // January 2015
to
glorify
Him and
respect each
other. Can the
commands of Scrip-
ture
to love one another, to bear each other’s burdens,
and to forgive others be overlooked In Exodus,
the Ten Commandments state that we should not
kill, commit adultery, lie, steal, and so on—all indicators
that humans are worth treating well.
Can anyone doubt God’s stance on life He
valued us enough to take on lowly flesh and live
among us. He preached the news of salvation, and
in the midst of all the sin and sorrow we had made
for ourselves, He still called us His friend, brother,
child. He called us to value others above ourselves,
and He modeled that for us.
This January, search your heart. It’s time for
new beginnings. Begin today to act in ways that
demonstrate to a lost world that even if the president
doesn’t value life, you do—and so does God.
One way to begin that process is to join New
Hope Pregnancy Care Center Tuesday, January 20,
at Waterville Baptist Church (4555 Dalton Pike SE)
at 7 p.m. for a Sanctity of Human Life Observance
service. This is a free community awareness event.
Please come.
