TURTLE!
During the night of 6
February 2012, on the
beach at Roche Percée
near Bourail, the Nouméa Lagoon Aquarium
fitted a 90 cm long female loggerhead turtle with
an Argos satellite tracking device. The turtle
was unable to lay her eggs that evening (she
was frustrated by a compacted sand dune) but
she was observed again two days later when
she returned to lay eggs one last time... with
her transmitter firmly attached to her back. If
you’d like to follow her journey, just go to the
The Jean-Marie Tjibaou
Cultural Centre, which
plays a key role in the
development of Kanak
culture, has announced
the main highlights of
its 2012 program.
The Centre, designed by one
of world’s leading architects,
is a unique showpiece and a
precious gateway to Kanak
and Oceanian culture.
In founding the TCC, New
Caledonia’s leading political
figures sought to create a
tangible symbol enshrining
the cultural aspirations
and determination of the
country’s multi-ethnic
communities to achieve
a shared identity and a
common destiny. And
the TCC has been an
unmitigated success! In 2011
alone, the Centre welcomed
100,000 visitors, including
15,000 children and young
people.
Inspiring, lively and
varied
The Tjibaou Cultural Centre,
whose current director is
the son of independentist
leader Jean-Marie Tjibaou,
offers a program of events
and attractions drawing
on all forms of expression
(art and sculpture, dance,
drama, music) and on all
ethnic traditions, with every
community a welcome
participant. Kanak cultural
traditions may take pride
of place but the Centre
welcomes artists and events
from all over the world. The
2012 season includes a rich
variety of events, including
the Yam Festival Day in April
and the Culinary Arts Day in
May, the superb exhibition
“Paroles de Vieux” in
June and, in November,
an exhibition showcasing
Oceanian dance costumes
and ornaments and the
Waan Dance Festival. The
shows in store for 2012
include a concert by Enono
Anya, performances of
Berber music and music
from Maré, the drama and
dance show “Traversée”
in July and performances
in September of “Tarzan,
Confession of a White
Monkey”. In 2012, the
TCC will be presenting
an impressive total of 15
original shows and events!
A must-see venue
Over and above its
imaginative program of
cultural events, the Tjibaou
Cultural Centre is one of
the world’s top architectural
wonders. The Centre is the
work of celebrated architect
and urban designer Renzo
Piano, who breathed the
essence of Kanak culture
and identity into his soaring,
tapered spires of slatted
wood. Wander through the
gardens, along the pathways
dotted with statues and
plunge even further into the
world of Kanak tradition,
where ancestral huts and
yams play a mystic role.
WINING & DINING
L’ASSIETTE
DU CAGOU
A very recent addition
to the gourmet
landscape in Nouméa’s
Latin Quarter, this
little restaurant has
already made its mark
and offers delicious
local fare.
Bountiful nature has
endowed New Caledonia
with an abundance of fresh
produce. Local dishes are
varied, flavoursome and
lavish, with a touch of rustic
charm. L’Assiette du Cagou
restaurant makes the very
most of great locally sourced
ingredients to offer guests
real New Caledonian cuisine
to remember. Vegetables,
fruit, meat, fish or seafood...
everything is ultra fresh and
ingredients are combined
and imagination. Guest will
love the inventive dishes
SHOPPING
FULL OF NATURAL
GOODNESS
Nouméa’s Botanical
and Wildlife Park
holds an organic
market on the 3 rd
Sunday of every
month - an excellent
initiative all round!
The next market is
scheduled for
18 March.
The Botanical and
Wildlife Park, one of
Nouméa’s most popular
attractions, showcases
a stunning variety
of New Caledonia’s
endemic plants and
wildlife species and
celebrates its 50th
anniversary this year.
For the last few years, in
line with its commitment
to sustainable
development, the
Botanical and Wildlife
Park has hosted a regular
market dedicated to
New Caledonia’s organic
farmers and growers.
and savours. The trochus
(locally known as “trocas”)
curry is heavenly, but then
so are the plantain banana
gratin and the fried manioc.
Naturally, the restaurant
serves various types of
bougna, the traditional
slow-cooked Kanak stew.
The chef concocts his dishes
to reflect the seasons but the
fixed menu changes every
day. You should reckon on
around F2,600 for a main
dish (very generous helpings)
served with a side dish and
also accompanied by green
salad, spicy papaya salad...
Mmm!
The range of produce
on display at the
Park’s organic market
is especially varied
and, naturally, quality
is top-notch, whether
you’re buying honey,
essential oils or
cosmetics. Going
organic is a way of life!
The market features a
dozen or so stalls selling
a variety of pure, natural
products such as honey,
jams and preserves and
a wealth of fruit and
vegetables, mushrooms
and garden produce,
essential oils, soaps and
herbs and spices. Don’t
miss it!
The Park opens early,
at 8.30 a.m., on market
days. Free entry to
models, rooftop finials...
Tribute to Oceanian
In 1872, the Isle
of Pines became a
penitentiary centre.
Over the next 25
years, over 3,0000
deportees were e
exiled to the island:
political prisoners
arrested after the fall
of the Paris Commune
and Kabyle Berbers
deported following the
March 1871 rebellion in
Algeria. Most returned
to France after they
were amnestied in
1879, while others
remained and settled in
Nouméa.
The Isle of Pines
penitentiary then
became an ordinary
prison. In 1878 to 1879,
following the uprising
led by Chief Ataï on New
Caledonia’s Main Island,
around 1878 Kanak
rebels were imprisoned
in the former penitentiary
buildings.
When finally freed
16 years later, some
remained and settled on
the island for good. In the
late 19 th century, the use
of the island as a penal
colony was increasingly
challenged and the prison
finally closed in 1911.
Various relics left behind
by the 3,000 deportees
can still be seen on the
island, including the
deportees’ graveyard,
the water tower, the
prison quarters, Kuto
wharf, the island’s
road network, the
Gendarmerie and the
Mercier residence.
Set off to explore on
foot, by bike or by car,
and plunge back into
the far-off time when
this dream island was a
place of exile…
THE NATURE SPOT
THE ONLY WAY IS UP...
On 17 and 18 March,
Terraventure is
organising a weekend
climbing Mount
Humboldt, 1 ¼ hours’
drive from Nouméa on
the road to Thio. The
program is flexible:
you can opt for a one
day climb or do the
whole 2 days.
At 1,681 metres, Mount
Humboldt is New
Caledonia’s second highest
peak after Mount Panié.
Depending on the time you
have at your disposal, the
climb can be done in one
or two days. The one-day
program ends at the
Humboldt mountain shelter,
just 200 m from the summit
but the views are to-die-for,
including the amazing
mossy rainforest. The
two-day climb includes an
overnight stay in the shelter
before scaling the final
200 m and starting back
down to base. A 3 rd option
is on offer: descending via
the opposite side of the
mountain, towards the East
Coast and the Petit Borendi
Tribe.
With or without
a guide
The path is well-marked
and signposted and
you can climb alone in
complete safety but, if
you wish, Terraventure
can provide a guide. The
special attraction offered
by this climb is that the
ascent begins with a
hike along a private mine
road usually closed
to sight-seekers and
visitors without a permit.
Although not technically
challenging, the climb
to the top requires good
all-round fitness.
MELANESIAN HUTS…
HOME, SOCIAL CENTRE…
PERFECT SCENIC ROUTE
TUNA
TARTARE
The architectural
simplicity of
style and charm
of traditional
Melanesian huts
have ensured their
survival over the
centuries.
Melanesian huts (“cases”)
were originally round
huts constructed using
vegetable matter, wood,
straw and occasionally, as
in Ouvea, coconut palm
leaves. A hearth was built
inside so that fires could
be lit for warmth during the
cool season. One of the
distinctive design features
of these huts is the low
door lintel which ensures
that anyone entering must
bow down, thus adopting
the proper attitude of
respect due to the owners
and inhabitants.
The design of a traditional
hut is a visual symbol and
reminder of the bonds
uniting the social group,
with the central upright
beam representing the
clan chief. Sculptured
wooden posts placed on
each side of the doorway
evoke the presence of
the ancestral spirits. In
every tribe, a ‘great hut’
dominates all others,
serving as the most
powerful symbol of the
chiefdom. The “great hut”
is the place where tribal
elders meet to discuss and
take collective decisions.
No-one may enter the great
hut unless invited to do so.
The Koné-Tiwaka is the
coast-to-coast road which
links Poindimié on the East
Coast to Koné, the North
Province administrative
capital, on the West
Coast.
This coast-to-coast road,
also known as the RPN2,
is a sightseer’s delight,
boasting some of the
most sensational views in
New Caledonia. The road
covers 60 km and took 10
years to build.
The route switchbacks
across the heights in
a series of dramatic
hairpin bends, unveiling
breathtaking vistas over
mountains mantled in
lush greenery and dotted
with glinting streams.
About half way across,
take a detour through the
Bobope tribe village.
A looping road runs
through the little village
with its pretty thatchroofed
huts clinging to the
mountainside.
As you draw nearer to the
East Coast, the road runs
beside the Tiwaka River
which gradually widens as
it flows peacefully down
towards the sea through
the mountainous terrain.
Fresh tuna tartare
is quick and
simple to make,
an elegant, light
and tasty dish perfect for those hot summer days.
Recipe:
Ingredients:
800 g raw tuna, 3 raw onions, 1 tomato,
40 g capers, 30 g parsley and chives,
2 tbsp olive oil, 1 tbsp lemon juice,
a few drops of Tabasco sauce, salt & pepper
Preparation:
Finely dice tomato and finely chop parsley and chives.
Crush capers and chop onions.
Cut tuna into small cubes and mix with chopped
ingredients in a salad bowl.
Add olive oil, lemon juice and Tabasco sauce.
Season to taste and carefully mix all ingredients.
Serve well chilled.
