Camp Information:
The six day Ocean Watch 4-H Marine Ambassadors Camp will take place on the Oregon State
University (OSU) campus for two nights and in Newport at the Hatfield Marine Science Center
(HMSC) for three nights. Transportation is provided between OSU and Hatfield. On the OSU
campus youth will learn to be 4-H Marine Ambassadors, tour labs, participate in science classes and
work with a team to construct Remote Operated Vehicles. In Newport campers will be introduced
to the 64-foot sailing research vessel Ocean Watch. You can see more information about Ocean

We will sail on Ocean Watch to access marine animal and plant survey sites, and collect water
samples. She will also be the center piece of our public information day on the 4 th of July, where
Ocean Watch 4-H Marine Ambassadors will practice their newly acquired skills to teach the public
about our oceans. The 4-H Marine Ambassador’s Mission is to raise awareness about the health of
the ocean and to show how changes are impacting various ecosystems and human life.
The Ocean Watch 4-H Marine Ambassador Camp will provide activities, experiments, projects,
and field experiences for students entering 10 th , 11 th , 12 th grade in the fall of 2013. Oregon resident
students currently in grade 9, 10, or 11 who have an interest in science, technology and
mathematics are eligible. Applications from historically underserved and underrepresented
students with limited opportunities are encouraged. There will be a focus on introduction to college
life, science and technology and public education that will provide each camper with the
knowledge and skills they need to become 4-H Marine Ambassadors.
4-H Marine Ambassador Application Process:
• Parent/Guardian and student complete the attached student application form.
• Camper Applicant writes a 350- 400 word essay (directions are on the application).
• Pay a $35.00 application fee by check, made out to the “Oregon 4-H Foundation”.
The fee will be returned if the applicant is not selected. No other fees apply.
All other camp fees are covered by a scholarship to the youth selected.
Please send all three documents in one envelope. The documents are to be mailed to Science Camp
Coordinator, 4-H Program, 106 Ballard Hall, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 97331 by
the deadline date, May 24, 2013. If all requested documents are not received by the deadline date, the
application will not be considered. Selections for the summer camp will be made in early June. You
will receive notification on the status of the application no later than June 7, 2013. Providing an email

(computer word processed) essays should be in 12 point type, using Arial, or Times New Roman, with 1 inch
margins.

campers will live on the OSU university campus and at a school in Newport, travel in vans and participate in
activities aboard the sail boat Ocean Watch. I understand that campers must come to camp with their own personal
