<strong>Camp</strong> Information:<br />

The six day <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>Watch</strong> 4-H <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Ambassadors</strong> <strong>Camp</strong> will take place on the Oregon State<br />

University (OSU) campus for two nights and in Newport at the Hatfield <strong>Marine</strong> Science Center<br />

(HMSC) for three nights. Transportation is provided between OSU and Hatfield. On the OSU<br />

campus youth will learn to be 4-H <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Ambassadors</strong>, tour labs, participate in science classes and<br />

work with a team to construct Remote Operated Vehicles. In Newport campers will be introduced<br />

to the 64-foot sailing research vessel <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>Watch</strong>. You can see more information about <strong>Ocean</strong><br />

We will sail on <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>Watch</strong> to access marine animal and plant survey sites, and collect water<br />

samples. She will also be the center piece of our public information day on the 4 th of July, where<br />

<strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>Watch</strong> 4-H <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Ambassadors</strong> will practice their newly acquired skills to teach the public<br />

about our oceans. The 4-H <strong>Marine</strong> Ambassador’s Mission is to raise awareness about the health of<br />

the ocean and to show how changes are impacting various ecosystems and human life.<br />

The <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>Watch</strong> 4-H <strong>Marine</strong> Ambassador <strong>Camp</strong> will provide activities, experiments, projects,<br />

and field experiences for students entering 10 th , 11 th , 12 th grade in the fall of 2013. Oregon resident<br />

students currently in grade 9, 10, or 11 who have an interest in science, technology and<br />

mathematics are eligible. Applications from historically underserved and underrepresented<br />

students with limited opportunities are encouraged. There will be a focus on introduction to college<br />

life, science and technology and public education that will provide each camper with the<br />

knowledge and skills they need to become 4-H <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Ambassadors</strong>.<br />

4-H <strong>Marine</strong> Ambassador Application Process:<br />

• Parent/Guardian and student complete the attached student application form.<br />

• <strong>Camp</strong>er Applicant writes a 350- 400 word essay (directions are on the application).<br />

• Pay a $35.00 application fee by check, made out to the “Oregon 4-H Foundation”.<br />

The fee will be returned if the applicant is not selected. No other fees apply.<br />

All other camp fees are covered by a scholarship to the youth selected.<br />

Please send all three documents in one envelope. The documents are to be mailed to Science <strong>Camp</strong><br />

Coordinator, 4-H Program, 106 Ballard Hall, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 97331 by<br />

the deadline date, May 24, 2013. If all requested documents are not received by the deadline date, the<br />

application will not be considered. Selections for the summer camp will be made in early June. You<br />

will receive notification on the status of the application no later than June 7, 2013. Providing an email<br />
