AADR President Martha Somerman on behalf of former US Surgeon
General David Satcher, who was unable to be present in San Diego.
Each year, the AADR bestows Honorary Membership upon an individual
for significant contributions to dental research. This year former US
Surgeon General David Satcher was selected, for his vigorous work to
include oral and dental health in the concept of general health. The
culmination of his work in this area, the publication of the first-ever
Surgeon General’s Report on Oral Health in America, brought together
the outcomes of many years of oral and dental research. Dushanka
Kleinman (NIDCR) accepted the award on Dr. Satcher’s behalf.
AADR President-elect Bertolami gave his inaugural address, “Disquieting
Change–Extraordinary Challenge”.
Editor Herzberg presented the 2002 William J. Gies Award for the best
paper published in the Journal of Dental Research to D.B. Ravassipour,
Wright (University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, University of
Pennsylvania, and Wake Forest University) for “Unique Enamel
Phenotype Associated with Amelogenen Gene (AMELX) Codon 41 Point
Mutation” (J Dent Res 79:1476-1481, 2000). Nominations for this award
may be made by any person, and the paper to be chosen must describe
work which has very significantly advanced knowledge in some aspect of
dental research. Dr. Wright accepted on behalf of his co-authors.
Michael Barnett accepts the Jack Hein Public Service Award from
AADR President Somerman.
The recipient of the 2002 Jack Hein Public
Service Award (AADR) was Michael
Barnett, of Morristown, NJ. This award
honors an AADR member who has given
exemplary service in the area of public
affairs by consistently promoting the
interests and activities of oral health
research to a wide constituency. Dr. Barnett
was recognized for his work with the
AADR’s National Affairs Committee and
Institutional Section. The award is supported
by the AADR. Previous recipients of the
Award are Jack W. Hein (1996), Gertrude
Quigley (1997), Christopher Squier (1998),
Jay Gershen (1999), Anthony Picozzi
(2000), and John Crawford (2001).
• Randal Rowland (University of California, San Francisco) announced the winners
of the 2002 AADR/Warner Lambert Hatton Awards Competition. These nine finalists
represented the AADR in the IADR/Unilever Hatton Awards Competition: (Junior)
Violetta Martinez (University of Texas, San Antonio), 1 st place, and Douglas Whitfield
(University of Washington, Seattle), 2 nd place; (Senior) Eben Alsberg (University of
Michigan, Ann Arbor), 1 st place, and Daniel Nguyen (University of Southern California),
2 nd place; (Post-doctoral) Hui Wu (University of Vermont), 1 st place, and Juan Dong
(University of Texas, San Antonio), 2 nd place.
• Daniel Ramos (University of California, San Francisco), Chair of the AADR
Student Research Fellowships Committee, announced the names of the 23 winners (see
separate listing elsewhere in this newsletter).
• IADR President Embery announced that Janet Kimball (University of
Washington, Seattle) was the lucky winner of the free meeting registration, randomly
selected from among those who registered online through the IADR’s Web site.
• Following the formal proceedings, participants were treated to a video giving
them a glimpse of what the 2003 IADR General Session in Göteborg, Sweden, had in
store for them, after which everyone was invited to the Welcome Reception, graciously
sponsored by Braun and Oral-B. The reception was held in the exhibit area.
Also during Meeting Week, the AADR Student Outreach Program, sponsored by the
Procter & Gamble Company, was held and was rated a tremendous success. Twenty
students from Rancho Bernardo High School attended the event, coordinated by Local
Organizing Committee Chair Jorgen Slots (University of Southern California). The
students were intrigued by “How Caries is Formed and Prevented”, presented by Lisa
Prater, Principal Researcher, Procter & Gamble. Some of the students even aspire to
careers in the dental field! The students were actively involved in the presentation and
asked intelligent questions. A tour of the exhibit hall was the final highlight of the day.
The outreach program is an annual educational event that promotes student awareness
and career development in the dental field.
Another innovation was President Embery’s Young Members’ Forum, designed to give
IADR’s young members a forum for access to senior members of the Association and an
opportunity to express their views. The Forum highlighted the following issues:
● How can IADR be improved for young members
● What innovations would young members like to see in IADR
● What difficulties are young members encountering in their own countries that
hinder their research progress scientifically
● Do the young members have funding problems How can IADR help
● Would young members like to see more interaction with their counterparts
across the IADR Divisions
● Do the young members understand how IADR works
Those in attendance discussed discrepancies between Divisional requirements for Hatton
competitors and the requirements at the international competition, as well as financial
difficulties in general facing young investigators in traveling to meetings. Approximately
14 young members from nine countries participated in the Forum, and this will likely
become a regular feature of IADR General Sessions.
• In addition to the companies mentioned above, the IADR thanks the following for
their support of IADR programs and activities:
• ● 3M ESPE, in support of the Hospitality Center
• ● Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals, in support of the IADR Council Dinner,
Registration computers, and the New Member Orientation Breakfast.
• ● Eastman Kodak, in support of the poster boards
• ● GC Corporation, in support of the “Japan Night” reception
• ● Procter & Gamble Company, in support of the IADR/AADR Presidents’
Reception and the Student Outreach Program
A Message from the President
It is a great honor for me to be President of IADR for
2002-2003. To follow in the footsteps of my esteemed
predecessors will be a difficult task. I wish to pay
particular tribute to my immediate predecessor, Graham
Embery, who provided excellent leadership over the past
year. Thank you, Graham, for your service and friendship.
The IADR meeting in San Diego was the largest ever held,
with an attendance of 6,505. The three plenary speakers-
David Sackett, David Relman, and Irwin Kuntz-provided
really excellent presentations, and the breadth and quality
of the 21 symposia (another record) were excellent. The
Group Program Chairs, at their end-of-meeting review,
John J. Clarkson
Trinity College, Dublin,
Ireland
were very positive in their comments on the facilities, the
abstract submission and review process, and the overall
impact of the meeting. I know that there were some
concerns about the availability of the printed Program
prior to the meeting, and this issue will be addressed by the
Board.
The IADR Council meeting allowed for excellent discussion on a broad range of subjects,
including increased representation on the IADR Board, representation of Groups on
Council, and plans to provide financial support from IADR for individuals who have
special difficulties in paying dues. Stephen Challacombe, IADR President-elect, also
provided the Council with an update on the key issues to be addressed in the review of
the current IADR Strategic Plan. The IADR Board will be seeking the views of Divisions
and Groups on the Plan and hopes to complete its deliberations at its Board meeting in
June. The input of members through Divisions and Groups on the future of IADR is
important, so please contribute to the strategic development of your Association. The
completion of the Strategic Plan and the initiation of actions to ensure the implementation
of its proposals will be an important goal for my year of office.
Over the past few months, I have contacted the Presidents of each of the Divisions of
IADR to obtain information on the various programs used by Divisions to promote dental
research. Some of the larger Divisions, such as the American Division, have very strong
active programs, and others have good outreach programs to provide fellowships for
travel and to young researchers. However, the majority of Divisions do not have a very
active involvement in promoting research through political and policy input at local and
regional levels. Resources are of course required to develop these efforts, and the
formation of Federations of Divisions, with perhaps some pooling of resources, may help
in this respect. In the competitive world of biomedical research, it is important that IADR
become more pro-active in promoting dental research.
For most members of IADR throughout the world, the role and activities of their local
Division or Section are of the most tangible benefit to them. The growth of
Divisions/Sections, their local scientific meetings, the encouragement given to new
members and student members-all are key to the future of IADR. I want to express the
appreciation of the Board of IADR to the officers of local Divisions and Sections for all
the voluntary work they carry out to develop IADR throughout the world. Please continue
the good work.
I have received numerous invitations to visit Divisions and Sections over my term of
office. I am really honored by these invitations; however, my availability is obviously
restricted due to commitments in my own position in Dublin. I do plan to visit the joint
meeting of the South African and East & Southern African Divisions in Durban in
August, the Southeast Asian Division meeting in Hong Kong in September, and the 1st
Pan European Federation meeting in Cardiff-also in September. All of these Divisions
have formed or are involved in forming Federations, and I hope that my visit can assist in
this process.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank the staff in the Central Office of IADR for their
continuing support and commitment to the Association, and I look forward to working
with them this year.
Eli Schwarz, who has been Executive Director since 1998, finishes his contract this year
and has decided not to renew it. Eli has been an excellent Executive Director and has
moved the Association forward in many key areas. I want to thank him for his service
and wish him every success in his future career. The IADR and AADR Board of
Directors have set up a Search Committee to identify a new Executive Director. Your
assistance and input into this process will be very welcome.
Please feel free to contact me if there are any issues of major concern that you may have
in the coming year. I look forward to working with you to ensure another successful year
for IADR.
Executive Director Announces Resignation; Editor to Extend Term
At the recent IADR General Session in San Diego, Executive
Director Eli Schwarz announced his decision not to accept a
second term. His current five-year term expires at the end of
2002. Both Boards of Directors received the decision with
regret. A Search Committee, chaired by Past President John
Greenspan (University of California-San Francisco), has
been formed, and an international search is under way.
Individuals wishing to be considered for this post should
contact either the Chair (greenspanj@dentistry.ucsf.edu) or
the Central Office (evonne@iadr.org) for details.
In a related move, Mark Herzberg, Editor of the Journal of Dental Research, now
nearing the end of his second five-year term, has offered to extend his services for an
additional year (i.e., through March, 2004), so that the organization would not be seeking
to fill two major roles simultaneously. Both Boards will act on this proposal at their May
and June meetings.
IADR Council Highlights (San Diego)
• Election results – Council was informed that Paul Robertson from the University
of Washington had been elected as the IADR Vice-president.
• ED Eli Schwarz announced he will leave IADR at end of his current contract.
(See elsewhere in this newsletter for information on the Search process for a new
ED.)
• Council approved the 2000 audit and the budgets for 2002-2003. This action
included approval of a $5 dues increase in 2003 along with approval of a program
to use IADR reserves to help subsidize member dues in regions of the world
wherein absorbing dues increases is a considerable burden. Also included in the
approved budgets were the 2003 meeting registration fee ($275) and a $1 increase
in the transaction fee for Scientific Groups.
• Nominations for the IADR Vice-presidential election later this year are: D.
Greenspan, T. Kuroda, and M. Sanz.
• Council approved an increase in the number of Board Members-at-Large from 3
to 5. The intent of this change is to allow for consistent representation from the
major geographic areas of the world.
• Council directed the Board to consider allowing each Scientific Group to have a
voting representative on Council. Groups were asked to discuss at their business
sessions and provide feedback.
• Council approved a switch of the sites for the 2006 and 2008 meetings. The 2006
meeting will now be held in Brisbane, Australia. The meeting originally
scheduled to be in Jerusalem in 2006 has been moved to 2008. The continuing
conflict in the Middle East precludes planning a meeting in this area of the world
in the near term. The Board will continue to monitor the situation closely.
• Council approved New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, as the site for the annual
meeting in 2007.
• Councilors agreed to review the draft IADR Strategic Plan and to provide
feedback to Central Office in time for consideration at the June meeting of the
Board.
Göteborg welcomes the IADR General Session in 2003
As Local Organizing Committee Chairman for the 81 st General Session of the IADR in
Göteborg next year, it is my great pleasure to welcome all IADR members to our lovely
city. The dates are set for June 25-28, 2003. The abstract deadline is January 17, 2003.
The preparations are well under way. Our dedicated team of co-workers is determined to
undertake every effort possible to set up a great meeting. We will plan a program that
builds on the strong tradition of dental research that has distinguished Sweden and the
other Scandinavian countries. We will also showcase the ample opportunities our city
offers for getting together for evening talks and social gatherings. While Göteborg has the
many opportunities of a big city, it also has the charm of a small town. Located on the
west coast of Sweden, it features a concentrated city area where hotels, shopping,
restaurants, and “street cafeterias” are located, just around the corner from the Congress
Centre. Remember, too, that June is the best time to visit Scandinavia! The General
Session is held just before the big tourist season. Yet, at that time, the weather is pleasant,
and the days are long and bright. You are going to be surprised at how light it is, even at
11 o’clock at night.
Let me highlight a few other attractive features of the meeting site. Although
located in northern Europe, Göteborg is easily accessed by air and for Europeans
even by car and rail. There are connecting flights from any of the major hubs in
Europe. Most delegates probably elect to come through Amsterdam, Copenhagen,
Frankfurt, London, Paris, or Stockholm.
SAS and Star Alliance is the official carrier (Star Alliance Conventions Plus, A truly
global network). When you book with Star Alliance, there is a 10% discount on published
fares.
If you fly roundtrip with SAS, make sure that you check out the possibilities for SAS Air
Passes. If you are from outside Europe, there are especially great buys, which will allow
you to visit any of the other European/Scandinavian countries at a low cost.
The top modern Congress Centre, Svenska Mässan, is located in the middle of the city.
From the main airport, Landvetter, it takes no more than 20 minutes to get there by
shuttle. The first stop is just outside the Congress Centre and nearby hotels. Shuttle cost
is ca. $5 US.
The Headquarters Hotel is going to be Hotel Gothia, which is directly connected to the
Congress Centre. Other hotels will be described in the Registration Brochure. Note that
included in the hotel costs are breakfast and tax. Prices are going to be reasonable, and
again you are going to be surprised. Rumors to the contrary, Sweden and in particular
Göteborg are very affordable. For those who elect to stay at a really low cost, there are
numerous good standard youth hostels, apartments, and cottage villages ($15-25
US/person/day), also close to the Congress Centre.
I look forward to seeing you all in Göteborg next summer. For more detailed information,
visit www.dentalresearch.org and look for Göteborg under “Meetings”. We will keep the
site updated on programs, social activities, satellite conferences, etc. You will also find
many valuable links that allow you to plan your Scandinavian trip the summer after next.
Division News
The Brazilian Division is pleased to report that it has overcome many difficulties and has
seen that it can do more for dental research, especially research that seeks alternatives in
real possibilities that directly benefit the community. Its 3500 members reflect 19 years
of work under a variety of leaders, each of whom has left his/her individual mark.
The Division is especially gratified at the great many young people producing quality
research.
All are welcome at the Division’s Annual Meeting, August 31 to September 4, to see
first-hand the exciting research happening in Brazil.
The Division is enthusiastic about the prospect of a Pan American Federation to enable
researchers throughout the Americas to conduct joint activities and research projects,
thereby enhancing professional relationships and intellectual production.
Victoria succeeds Lize-Mari Landis, who left to join her husband in his contracting
business.
Production Manager Jessica Megee married Anthony Fritz on April 6, with Director of
Publications Linda Hemphill playing the organ for the ceremony. Jess and Anthony will
be relocating to Maine.
Network Manager Jeff Zink and his wife Elena welcomed Ryan to their family in late
March. All are doing well.
Profile: Sophia Chou, Junior, Brookline (MA) High School
“Effect of Channeled Scaffolds on
Human Bone Tissue Engineering.”
This was the title of Abstract
#2145, presented as a poster at the
recent IADR General Session in
San Diego. Since there were 4,154
other abstracts also presented in
San Diego, this is not particularly
noteworthy. Except that the
presenter, Sophia Chou, is a junior
in high school, making her the
youngest presenter in the 80-year
history of the IADR…not exactly
your local “Science Fair”!
How does a 16-year-old girl develop an interest in tissue engineering Having a parent
“in the field” certainly helps. Lee Chou is Professor and Director of the Division of Oral
Medicine at Boston University (Goldman School of Dental Medicine), and Sophia recalls
spending countless hours as a youngster in her father’s lab, reading, observing, and
questioning. Encouraged by her dad, she undertook some experiments, which gradually
grew more complex. After seeing reports of patients suffering severe bone loss due to the
ravages of cancer, she decided to investigate the fabrication of bone. She worked fulltime
in the lab during her summer break to gather and analyze the data, then write the
abstract.
Sophia’s research activity has been strongly supported by the School and by the Dean as
a good example of the University’s connection to the community. Her high school is also
pleased that she has had this opportunity to sample research at the college level.
Born in Shanghai in August of 1985, Sophia has traveled the world as her father’s career
has progressed. At Brookline High School (which she says is a “regular” school, not a
“science and technology” school), she studies Honors Chemistry, Honors Math, Honors
American History, English, and Chinese, with cooking and playing the piano as hobbies.
Her friends take her scientific bent in stride. She plans to attend Boston University, then
earn her dental degree and open a clinic.
We hope she continues in research as well!
People ‘n’ Places
AADR Vice-president Dominick DePaola (Forsyth Institute, Boston) has been elected to
the Board of Directors of Research!America, a non-profit advocacy organization (of
which AADR is a member) supporting increased Federal funding for research at the NIH.
He joins fellow IADR member Jay Gershen (University of Colorado) on the Board. R!A
is nearing the end of a five-year campaign to double the NIH budget (see ad).
IADR member Memory Elvin-Lewis (Washington University, St. Louis, MO) has
recently been honored with the Martin de la Cruz Award (2001) in Mexico. Remarkably,
her husband, Prof. Walter Lewis, received the same award in 2000. Dr. Elvin-Lewis was
recognized for her lifetime’s work in ethnodentistry and ethnobotanical research, fields
largely neglected in many scientific discussions on pharmaceuticals, and their
development, despite the fact that over 30% of medicinals produced by the worldwide
pharmaceutical industry are botanically based. Of particular interest to oral health
researchers would be the fact that she was first attracted to study the ethnobotanical
treasures of the Amazon, when she observed the tooth-blackening practices of Jivaro
Indians of the Peruvian Amazon. The natives would blacken their teeth with a plantbased
substance that inhibited dental plaque growth, with apparent inhibition of caries
and periodontal diseases.
IADR member Al Guckes (Department of Prosthodontics, UNC-Chapel Hill) received the
University of North Carolina School of Dentistry's highest teaching award, the Richard F.
Hunt Excellence in Pre Doctoral Teaching Award, at the annual Spurgeon Banquet at the
George Watts Hill Alumni Center, April 4, 2002. Recipients of the Hunt award are
nominated and selected by students. Nominees are identified based on five criteria: fostering
intellect, demonstrating competence and perspective in all aspects of dentistry, respecting
patients and students, preparing superbly for classes, and offering appropriate and timely
feedback. The award is sponsored by the Loblolly Dental Study Club through an endowed
fund the club established with the Dental Foundation of North Carolina Inc. The award is
given in memory of Dr. Richard F. Hunt, a member of the Class of 1955 who died in South
America in a plane crash in 1968. In presenting the award, Dean John Stamm read excerpts
from the student nominations "Dr. Guckes is 'patient, kind and always willing to help a
student in need. He treats all students equally, as colleagues, with respect and understanding.
He is astoundingly good at what he does and is an excellent, caring educator who is always
working to improve teaching materials. You can tell that he loves his job, teaching
students.'"
IADR Member David C. Johnsen (Dean, University of Iowa College of Dentistry)
became the 79th President of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) at its
March meeting in San Diego.
IADR member Denis F. Kinane has just been appointed the Delta Dental Endowed
Professor of Oral Health and Systemic Disease at the University of Louisville (KY)
School of Dentistry, effective immediately. He will concurrently serve as Associate
Dean for Research and Enterprise. He comes to Louisville from Scotland, where he held
a variety of posts in Edinburgh, Dundee, and Glasgow.
IADR member Poul Erik Petersen (University of Copenhagen, Denmark) has been
named to run the Oral Health Program in the Department of Noncommunicable Disease
Prevention and Health Promotion at the WHO's world headquarters in Geneva,
Switzerland.
IADR Vice-president and AADR Past President Paul Robertson (University of
Washington, Seattle) has been appointed the Washington Dental Service Foundation
Distinguished Professor in Dentistry, a position established in 1985 to improve the
quality of dental health, education, and scientific knowledge for the benefit of the public
and dental community. The appointment will conclude in 2004 with a symposium
featuring a panel of internationally recognized speakers who will address current issues
affecting the dental health care profession.
Elias Zerhouni, an administrator at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in
Baltimore, has been nominated as the new Director of the National Institutes of Health,
succeeding Harold Varmus, who left the post nearly two years ago.
WHO and Publishers Launch "Access to Research" through Internet for
Developing Countries
Dentists in developing countries can now gain free access through the
Internet to one of the world's largest collections of biomedical literature.
The Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative (HINARI) is a new
initiative to provide free or nearly free access to the major journals in
biomedical and related social sciences, to public institutions in developing
countries. Starting in January, 2002, there are over 1,000 journals from
the world's six largest publishers at
http://www.healthinternetwork.org/scipub.php
Some 1500 journals from six major publishers (Blackwell, Elsevier
Science, Harcourt Group, Wolters Kluwer, Springer Verlag, and John
Wiley) will be available for at least three years. Additional publishers will
join in a second phase of the project in mid-2002.
Public institutions in two groups of countries can sign up for the Health
InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative. The country lists are based on
GNP per capita (World Bank figures, 1998). Institutions in countries with
GNP per capita below $1000 are eligible for free access to the literature.
Institutions in countries with GNP per capita between $1000 and $3000
will be eligible for access at reduced prices.
Within these countries, HINARI will benefit bona fide academic, research,
and government institutions. Eligible institutions whose staff and students
will have access to the journals are: schools of medicine, nursing, public
health, and pharmacy; universities; health and medical research institutes;
government offices working in the health sector; and medical libraries.
These publishers cover large segments of the dental scientific literature
and include the following journal titles: Am J Orthod Dentofac Orthop,
Arch Oral Biol, Biomaterials, Br J Oral Maxillofac Surg, Calcif Tissue
Int, Clin Orthod Res, Clin Oral Implants Res, Clin Oral Invest,
Most of these titles are now accessible through the HINARI, and more are
likely to follow.
Promoting Research in Developing Regions
A Request for Proposals from IADR Divisions and Sections
Rationale/Program Description
A priority of the IADR Strategic Plan is to promote oral health research worldwide, with
specific emphasis on assisting regions with less-developed research programs. During its
1995 meeting in Singapore, the IADR Board of Directors and Council elected to pursue
initiatives using 10% of any surplus funds from the Singapore and future IADR General
Sessions. During 1998, then-IADR President Mamoru Sakuda chaired a task force aimed
at improving the effectiveness of this initiative. In January, 1999, after reviewing the
report of the Sakuda Task Force, the IADR Board suggested that this amount be
increased, and at its 1999 meeting in Vancouver, the IADR Council voted to dedicate an
additional $40,000 annually to this program for each of the next three years. The
adequacy of proposal submissions and funding will be evaluated each year to determine
if further changes are needed. Council also established a new Regional Development
Committee (RDC) to provide more aggressive promotion and guidance for this initiative.
The RDC met in September, 1999, and developed recommendations for enhancing the
program (IADR Reports, Volume 21, Number 3, September/October 1999). Following
grant awards, selected RDC members will monitor and serve as liaison for grants.
The purpose of this Request for Proposal (RFP) is to identify projects, submitted by
IADR Divisions/Sections, that would help initiate research and development or otherwise
strengthen the oral health research infrastructure in developing regions. In response to
appropriate proposals, grants will be awarded to Divisions/Sections subject to the
availability of funds and approval by the IADR Board of Directors. The size of
individual grants will vary, depending on the number and quality of proposals submitted
and the amount of funding available. Although it is desirable to encourage the
development of a research infrastructure in as many developing regions as possible,
consideration will be given to supporting ongoing initiatives that have demonstrated an
ability to promote research development. Divisions/Sections currently having welldeveloped
oral health research efforts may submit proposals whose objectives are to
assist adjacent regions/Divisions/Sections that do not have such capacity. Where
appropriate, regional coalitions of Divisions are encouraged to join together to submit
proposals and implement programs. Wherever possible, the use of matching funds to
enhance the effort is encouraged. Examples of projects eligible for support include:
training workshops and grants, improving access to scientific information, provision of
scientific journals, fellowship and lecture programs, communications infrastructures,
training in research methods, and surveys of oral health that would identify further
research needs and provide experience in conducting research for participants, as well as
other programs which would advance oral/dental health research, and improve
communications and collaborations in the oral health scientific community in the region
and internationally. Proposals are reviewed twice annually. Submission dates are
October 1, 2002, and March 1, 2003–e.g., a proposal received in the Central Office
before October 1, 2002, will be acted upon by the IADR Board no later than January,
2003, whereas a proposal received after October 1 will be considered with proposals
receiving final action by summer, 2003.
Focus of Proposals
Although a range of projects is eligible for support, the IADR has decided to emphasize
certain areas. The highest priority will be placed on those targeting support for:
• young scientists’ development by supporting attendance at appropriate
local, regional, or international meetings to present the results of their
research;
• mentoring of developing scientists, e.g., travel for established scientists to
work on site with students/developing researchers for various periods of
time (short “visiting lecture” programs will not be considered for funding);
and
• initiation/enhancement of newsletters or other communication systems,
e.g., use of the World Wide Web (www), that describe and promote local
oral health research activities.
Proposals should not exceed five (5) typewritten pages (approximately 1,000 words) and
should be submitted in the following format:
Background
Grant applications should include a brief historical background of the Division/Section
making the application and any experience it has had in conducting activities promoting
an oral health research infrastructure or activities. The region/institution to be targeted
may be within the Division/Section or in an adjacent region, and it should be described.
Objectives
List the specific objectives to be achieved.
Program Description/Evaluation
Applications should include a full description of the proposed program(s), project(s),
initiative(s), or infrastructure development and how the targeted area would be affected.
The description should include a methodology, a time line, and a plan to evaluate the
effectiveness of the program.
Financial Request/Matching Support
A grant program budget should be provided. Please indicate the amount in US dollars for
each aspect of the program and the time line required to implement the program outlined
above. Indicate if university, institution, association, or corporate support will be added
to this grant, the length of this financial commitment, the US$ amount, and the number of
personnel who will supplement the grant program. Describe the institutional support,
name the responsible institutional officials, and include a signed letter of support from the
institution.
Research Publication
Grant applicants should indicate if the results of this grant will be submitted for
publication in a professional journal or presentation at a scientific meeting. If so, the
name of the journal or meeting should be included. Approval of the grant is not
contingent upon publication or presentation.
Reporting
No later than (6) months after the completion date of the project, as described in Part III
above, the Division/Section shall provide a written report to the IADR Central Office
describing the results of the initiative. The description should follow the evaluation plan
outlined in Part III. A summary report should be submitted for publication in IADR
Reports.
Application
Each Division/Section may present only one proposal per grant cycle. To apply for a
grant, a Division or Section should submit a signed original and two copies of the grant
proposal in English to the IADR Central Office in Alexandria, Virginia, USA, no later
than October 1 or March 1. Proposals should be typewritten in the format outlined
above. Grant applications that lack the required information will be returned to the
originators with an explanation of the proposal’s shortcomings. All grant applications
will be evaluated and approved or rejected by the IADR Board of Directors. Applicants
will be notified of the status of their submissions prior to the formal announcement of
funded proposals. The proposals will be evaluated according to the establishment of
clear and measurable outcome variables. For example, a proposal to launch or enhance a
newsletter should include a description of the number and size of issues to be produced
within a specified period as well as a specific plan for continuation of the medium
subsequent to the grant support period. Support for scientists beginning research careers
should specify the number who are currently able to travel to meetings, the level of
support for each scientist’s travel, and the additional number projected to attend
national/international meetings as a result of the grant.
ISBOR Update
Bad breath, similar to many other oral conditions, involves interplay between the oral
cavity and other parts of the anatomy. Whereas some 85-90% of cases of oral malodor
originate in the mouth itself (particularly the tongue dorsum and interdental plaque), the
nose, tonsils, and systemic conditions also play important roles. Furthermore, almost 1%
of the population suffers from halitophobia, an exaggerated fear of having bad breath that
controls their lives. The multidisciplinary nature of this condition led us, in 1996, to
establish the International Society for Breath Odor Research (ISBOR) to promote the
dissemination of research in this area. Many of the members of ISBOR are also active
IADR members, and the IADR has kindly allowed us the opportunity to hold our annual
business meetings during the IADR General Session.
Our next conference, The Sixth International Conference on Breath Odor, will be held on
Sept. 16-18th, 2003, at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, in London. The
meeting is being jointly organized by ISBOR and by the Eastman Dental Institute
(University College London). Any IADR members interested in attending and/or
presenting are welcome to contact Mel Rosenberg (melros@post.tau.ac.il) or Dean
Pateman (D.Pateman@eastman.ucl.ac.uk) for further details.
In memoriam: Jack Hein, 1920-2002
The Central Office has just learned of the death of Jack Hein, former Director of The
Forsyth Institute (then the Forsyth Dental Center).
Jack served both the IADR and AADR in numerous capacities over the years, chiefly as
IADR Treasurer (1979-82), AADR Treasurer (1985-88), and long-time chair of the
AADR’s National Affairs Committee (NAC). Together with his Forsyth colleague,
Gertrude Quigley, he established the AADR Cohorts, an advocacy group of AADR
members (today numbering over 500) who could be alerted to write letters to Congress in
support of specific health-funding issues. It was in recognition of his NAC activities in
promoting the cause of oral health research to Congress and other constituencies that the
Jack Hein Public Service Award was established, and he was the first recipient (1996).
Subsequent recipients were Gertrude Quigley (1997), Christopher Squier (1998), Jay
Gershen (1999), Anthony Picozzi (2000), John Crawford (2001), and Michael Barnett
(2002).
Prior to the beginning of his service at Forsyth Dental Center in 1962, Jack held the posts
of Head, Division of Dental Research (1948-52), and Chairman of the Department of
Dentistry and Dental Research (1952-55) at the University of Rochester, then was Dental
Director at the Colgate-Palmolive Co. (1955-59), before returning to academia as Dean of
the Tufts School of Dental Medicine (1959-62). He was Director at Forsyth for over 30
years.
His wisdom and counsel will be missed.
