herbal medicines with reference to c<strong>on</strong>taminants and residues (7).<br />
Chemical assays<br />
To be established according to nati<strong>on</strong>al requirements. Since the major<br />
c<strong>on</strong>stituents are berberine and related alkaloids, the high-performance<br />
liquid chromatography method of analysis established for berberine in<br />
Rhizoma Hydrastis (10) may be employed for standardizati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
Major chemical c<strong>on</strong>stituents<br />
The major c<strong>on</strong>stituents are isoquinoline alkaloids, principally berberine,<br />
occurring at a c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> up to 4.5%. Other major alkaloids include<br />
oxyacanthine (0.04%), berbamine (0.6–1.2%), columbamine (0.3%), jatrorrhizine<br />
(0.4%) and magnoflorine (2.1%) (11–13). St<strong>ru</strong>ctures of berbamine,<br />
berberine, columbamine, jatrorrhizine and magnoflorine are presented<br />
