Descripti<strong>on</strong><br />

An erect, deciduous, heavily branched thorny sh<strong>ru</strong>b, up to 2 metres high.<br />

The thorny branches are angular, deeply grooved, initially brownishyellow,<br />

later becoming grey-white. The thorns are 1–2 cm l<strong>on</strong>g and prot<strong>ru</strong>de<br />

horiz<strong>on</strong>tally. The leaves are compound, obovate to elliptoid 2–4 cm<br />

l<strong>on</strong>g, and bear leaflets with dentate margins and spine. The flowers are<br />

5–7 cm l<strong>on</strong>g in yellow, dense, hanging clusters. Sepals (6) are yellow and<br />

petals (6) are orange at the base. Ovary is superior with a flat stigma. The<br />

edible f<strong>ru</strong>it is a bright, scarlet, obl<strong>on</strong>g-cylindrical berry, 10–13 mm l<strong>on</strong>g<br />

and 6 mm thick, c<strong>on</strong>taining 2 seeds. The exocarp is membranous-coriaceous<br />

(5, 6).<br />
