Definiti<strong>on</strong><br />

F<strong>ru</strong>ctus Myrtilli c<strong>on</strong>sists of the dried ripe f<strong>ru</strong>its of Vaccinium myrtillus L.<br />

(Ericaceae) (1).<br />

Syn<strong>on</strong>yms<br />

Vaccinium angelosums Dulac, V. m<strong>on</strong>tanum Salisb., Myrtilis niger Gilib. (2).<br />

Geographical distributi<strong>on</strong><br />

Found in Europe and in the North American Rocky Mountains (2, 5).<br />

Descripti<strong>on</strong><br />

Trailing sh<strong>ru</strong>b forming large col<strong>on</strong>ies from creeping rhizomes, 10–60 cm<br />

in height; twigs green, glabrous, 3-angled. Leaves: deciduous, alternate,<br />

short petiolate; blade broadly elliptic to ovate, 6–18 mm wide, 10–30 mm<br />

l<strong>on</strong>g, apex acute to obtuse, base rounded; margin ser<strong>ru</strong>late; bright green,<br />

lower surface sparsely glandular with prominent venati<strong>on</strong>. Inflorescence:<br />

flowers solitary or paired in leaf axils, bracts 2. Flowers: perfect, radially<br />

symmetrical, 5-lobed; calyx lobes very short to almost absent; corolla pale<br />

green or white to pink, broadly urceolate to globose, 4–7 mm wide, 3–5 mm<br />

l<strong>on</strong>g, lobes very short and revolute; stamens 10, filaments glabrous, anthers<br />

awned, dehiscent by terminal pores; ovary inferior, style usually included.<br />

F<strong>ru</strong>it: berry, oblate-globose, 5–9 mm diameter, blue to black, rarely<br />

glaucous, many-seeded. Chromosome number: 2x = 2n = 24 (2).<br />
