F<strong>ru</strong>ctus Macrocarp<strong>on</strong>ii c<strong>on</strong>sists of the fresh or dried ripe f<strong>ru</strong>it of Vaccinium<br />

macrocarp<strong>on</strong> Ait. (Ericaceae) (1).<br />

Note: Cranberry liquid preparati<strong>on</strong> is official in the United States Pharmacopeia<br />

(2).<br />

Syn<strong>on</strong>yms<br />

Oxycoccus macrocarpus (Alt.) Pursh., O. painstris var. macrocarpus (1).<br />

Selected vernacular names<br />

Af<strong>on</strong>ya, American cranberry, bear berry, black cranberry, cranberry,<br />

Kr<strong>on</strong>sbeere, large cranberry, low cranberry, marsh apple, Moosbeere,<br />

Preisselbeere, suureviljaline jõhvikas, trailing swamp cranberry (1, 3, 4).<br />

Geographical distributi<strong>on</strong><br />

Native to eastern North America (1).<br />

Descripti<strong>on</strong><br />

Trailing evergreen sh<strong>ru</strong>b up to 15 cm in height; rhizomatous. Stem: slender,<br />

glabrous to hairy, rooting at nodes. Leaf: simple, alternate, sub-sessile; blade<br />

narrowly elliptic, rarely obl<strong>on</strong>g, (5–) 7–10 (–18) mm l<strong>on</strong>g, (2–) 3–4 (–5) mm<br />

wide, apex rounded; leathery, upper surface green, lower surface glaucous;<br />

margin entire, rarely revolute. Inflorescence: flowers solitary in leaf axils of<br />

new shoots; bracts 2, green, 1–2 mm wide; pedicels 2–3 cm, recurved, jointed<br />

to the flower. Flower: perfect, radially symmetrical with a nectariferous<br />

disc surrounding the style; calyx 4-lobed; corolla white to pink, cup-shaped,<br />

4-lobed with lobes much l<strong>on</strong>ger than cup and str<strong>on</strong>gly reflexed at anthesis;<br />

stamens 8, filaments with stiff hairs al<strong>on</strong>g margins, anthers dehiscent by<br />

apical pores; ovary inferior, style 1, stigma capitate. F<strong>ru</strong>it: berry, globose,<br />

9–20 mm in diameter, glabrous, red to crims<strong>on</strong>, dark burgundy or almost<br />

black, many-seeded. Chromosome number: n = 12 (1).<br />
