Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />
Purpose and c<strong>on</strong>tent of <str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Although the <str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g> include <strong>on</strong>e secti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> “<strong>medicinal</strong> uses” with<br />
three categories of informati<strong>on</strong>, the purpose of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g> was<br />
clearly explained in the introducti<strong>on</strong> to volume 1, and it is unnecessary to<br />
repeat it here. But it should be noted that the word “m<strong>on</strong>ograph” is used<br />
as a technical term <strong>on</strong>ly. It does not have the same meaning as “m<strong>on</strong>ograph”<br />
in any type of pharmacopoeia. In additi<strong>on</strong>, it is reiterated here that<br />
this publicati<strong>on</strong> is not intended to replace any official compendia such as<br />
pharmacopoeias, formularies or legislative documents.<br />
It should also be emphasized that the descripti<strong>on</strong>s included in the secti<strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>on</strong> <strong>medicinal</strong> uses should not be taken as implying <str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s official<br />
endorsement or approval. They merely represent the systematic collecti<strong>on</strong><br />
of scientific informati<strong>on</strong> available at the time of preparati<strong>on</strong>, for the<br />
purpose of informati<strong>on</strong> exchange.<br />
Finally, the Fourth <str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g> C<strong>on</strong>sultati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>selected</strong> <strong>medicinal</strong> <strong>plants</strong><br />
recommended <str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g> to update existing <str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g> in view of the availability<br />
of new data and of the format change that has been employed for<br />
volumes 3 and 4, and that this process should be given priority over the<br />
development of new <str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g>, if resources are limited. This volume<br />
might therefore be the last volume of <str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> comm<strong>on</strong>ly<br />
used <strong>medicinal</strong> <strong>plants</strong>. We should like to express our appreciati<strong>on</strong> to all<br />
the experts, nati<strong>on</strong>al health authorities, <str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g> collaborating centres and<br />
NGOs for their efforts, technical c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s and support in the preparati<strong>on</strong><br />
of the four volumes of <str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>selected</strong> <strong>medicinal</strong><br />
<strong>plants</strong>.<br />
In the future, <str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g> will c<strong>on</strong>sider updates of existing volumes of<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g> and will focus <strong>on</strong> providing technical assistance for nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
capacity building through development of sets of regi<strong>on</strong>al and/or subregi<strong>on</strong>al<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g> by transferring the know-how and by mobilizing<br />
the established global network.<br />
