herbal medicines with reference to c<strong>on</strong>taminants and residues (14).<br />
Chemical assays<br />
C<strong>on</strong>tains not less than 0.4% of total alkaloids.<br />
Major chemical c<strong>on</strong>stituents<br />
The major biologically active c<strong>on</strong>stituents are alkaloids and tannins.<br />
Isopelletierine, methylpelletierine, methylisopelletierine, pseudopelletierine,<br />
norpseudopelletierine and related alkaloids totalling 0.5–0.9%.<br />
The tannins present at up to 22% in the bark include punicalin, its 2-Ogalloyl<br />
derivative and punicalagin (12, 17, 18). The st<strong>ru</strong>ctures of pelletierine,<br />
N-methylisopelletierine, pseudopelletierine, and the tannins punicalin<br />
