Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

Europe (CCEE) and their neighbouring countries, in close collaborati<strong>on</strong><br />

with the <str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g> Regi<strong>on</strong>al Office for Europe. The 13 new <str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong><br />

comm<strong>on</strong>ly used <strong>medicinal</strong> <strong>plants</strong> in NIS have been drafted based <strong>on</strong> the<br />

format of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g> by the experts in NIS and CCEE countries<br />

with the support of experts, nati<strong>on</strong>al health authorities and NGOs<br />

within and also outside the NIS and CCEE countries. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>medicinal</strong> <strong>plants</strong> comm<strong>on</strong>ly used in NIS have been completed<br />

and will be published so<strong>on</strong>. Based <strong>on</strong> the NIS countries model, in the future,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g> would like to cooperate with more countries or regi<strong>on</strong>s to<br />

develop their <str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> comm<strong>on</strong>ly used <strong>medicinal</strong> <strong>plants</strong>.<br />

Preparati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g> for volume 4<br />

Selecti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>medicinal</strong> <strong>plants</strong><br />

The selecti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>medicinal</strong> <strong>plants</strong> for inclusi<strong>on</strong> in the <str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

is based <strong>on</strong> worldwide use. The <strong>medicinal</strong> <strong>plants</strong> <strong>selected</strong> must meet two<br />

major criteria: (1) they must be in comm<strong>on</strong> use in at least two <str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g> Regi<strong>on</strong>s;<br />

and (2) there must be sufficient scientific data available to satisfy<br />

the requirements of the various secti<strong>on</strong>s in the m<strong>on</strong>ograph format.<br />

The recommended selecti<strong>on</strong> criteria discussed at the Third <str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

C<strong>on</strong>sultati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> Selected Medicinal Plants (Ottawa, Canada, July 2001)<br />

were applied to the preparati<strong>on</strong> of volume 4 of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

Preparati<strong>on</strong><br />

During the preparati<strong>on</strong> of volume 4, more than 200 experts were involved<br />

in additi<strong>on</strong> to members of <str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s Expert Advisory Panel <strong>on</strong> Traditi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

Medicine, a significant expansi<strong>on</strong> compared to the numbers involved in<br />

the previous three volumes. Nati<strong>on</strong>al d<strong>ru</strong>g regulatory authorities in<br />

81 countries participated in the process, again a greater number than for<br />

the previous volumes. This global network of active players facilitated<br />

wider access to the available scientific references and informati<strong>on</strong>, in terms<br />

of both quality and quantity. This c<strong>on</strong>siderable level of support c<strong>on</strong>tributed<br />

greatly to the efficiency of the preparati<strong>on</strong> process.<br />

The Fourth <str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g> C<strong>on</strong>sultati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> Selected Medicinal Plants was held<br />

in Salerno-Paestum, Italy, in October 2005 to review and finalize the draft<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Thirty-four experts and d<strong>ru</strong>g regulatory authorities from<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>WHO</str<strong>on</strong>g> Member States participated (Annex 1). Following extensive discussi<strong>on</strong>,<br />

28 of the 32 draft <str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g> were adopted for inclusi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Changes in format in volume 4<br />

A descripti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>selected</strong> secti<strong>on</strong>s of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>m<strong>on</strong>ographs</str<strong>on</strong>g> is given in the<br />

General technical notices, which reflect the above-menti<strong>on</strong>ed format<br />
