The Committee expressed some concern over the proposed co-op schedule, specifically the onesemester
“break” for those students who do not secure an eight-month co-op position or two fourmonth
positions. Student satisfaction and graduation rates could be negatively affected by the twosemester
break between Level 7 and Level 8.
Recommendations:
Consider offering alternative completion options for students: 1) offering Level 8 in summer
for students who have not secured an eight-month co-op position or a second co-op position,
2) facilitating part-time completion through online, night or weekend courses for students
who have secured a full-time employment after Level 7. (Ross noted that the feasibility of a
part-time option would be largely determined by enrolment.)
Investigate co-op requirements: could the co-op position be part-time with students meeting
minimum hours over eight months (Doug noted that the College expects to adhere to
existing co-op requirements, which do not allow for a lot of flexibility.)
Professional Affiliations
As proposed, the program has affiliations with Google and the Canadian Institute of Marketing. The
Google affiliation prepares students to pursue both the Google Adwords and Analytics designations.
The Committee supported both affiliations and a curriculum that prepares students to pursue relevant
designations.
Recommendations:
Investigate Salesforce.com for available certifications.
13. Summarize Direction for Fanshawe – motion to proceed
MTCU on the basis that this proposal meets or exceeds the requirements of the marketing profession
and current digital marketing practices.
Moved: Robert Brookes
Seconded: Susan Smedley
14. Next Steps
Ross outlined the next steps in Fanshawe’s program development process (e.g., curriculum
development, transfer protocol), which culminates with the submission of a proposal to the
Postsecondary Education Quality Assessment Board (PEQAB) and to Fanshawe’s Board of
Governors in June for a September 2013 launch. As the process continues, Fanshawe will send
updates to the Program Advisory Committee and provide opportunity for feedback. Ongoing
opportunities for involvement will be communicated should the programs be approved.
15. Wrap up and Closing Remarks
Mary thanked all participants for their input and invited all to continue their involvement in the
Program Advisory Committee and the program, particularly as co-op employers.
