C. Progress Towards Achieving Board Ends and College Strategic Directions<br />

C.1 Vision and Mission (Policy A-05) (cont’d)<br />

Significant efforts will be directed to finalize planning for the information and<br />

communications technology infrastructures to support Phase 1 <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Applied and<br />

Performance Arts (SAPA) in downtown London. As a building hosting a number <strong>of</strong><br />

electronic media intensive programs and as our downtown flagship facility, it is important<br />

that we leverage technology in a manner that will position the College going forward in this<br />

location. Conversations are underway with the City <strong>of</strong> London, London Hydro, LARG*Net<br />

and others to find the most cost and operationally effective way to provide essential<br />

connectivity and related services to our SAPA campus.<br />

Several faculty members in the School <strong>of</strong> Language and Liberal Studies (SLLS) will support<br />

online course delivery by assisting other faculty in converting courses from face-to-face to<br />

hybrid or online delivery. This effort will result in engaging, productive and pedagogically<br />

sound courses that appeal to a wider variety <strong>of</strong> learners.<br />

The Geographic and Information Systems (GIS) and Urban Planning program in the School<br />

<strong>of</strong> Design has introduced iPads as a technology tool in the field. The experience will begin<br />

to put graduates from the program at the leading edge <strong>of</strong> GIS technology use and give them<br />

a competitive advantage with employers. The iPads will enable the students to do GIS<br />

(Geographic Information System) work at their planning site instead <strong>of</strong> the previous process<br />

<strong>of</strong> collecting data and doing the work back on campus.<br />

New technology will be implemented which will provide enhanced options for first point <strong>of</strong><br />

contact telephone service for the College and also support improved capacity to monitor and<br />

analyze service levels.<br />

Retail Services will continue to increase brand awareness and keep students in the know<br />

through creative messaging by employing social media such as Facebook, Twitter and<br />

online ordering enhancements. These new improvements will increase student engagement<br />

through permission-based promotions and social media directed marketing. Retail Services<br />

will also collaborate with academic schools to provide e-learning resources where needed to<br />

support online program and course delivery.<br />

The Office <strong>of</strong> the Registrar and Fanshawe International Centre will expand the<br />

implementation <strong>of</strong> Image Now electronic document management s<strong>of</strong>tware and process<br />

review to improve efficiency <strong>of</strong> processing non-academic documents such as home stay<br />

requests, building on successful implementation <strong>of</strong> the online application. This initiative<br />

supports the strategic growth <strong>of</strong> our international student enrolments and retention <strong>of</strong><br />

students.<br />

Effective Student Supports<br />

The 2012/13 academic year will see the launch <strong>of</strong> the English Language Institute (ELI) that<br />

will be housed in the School <strong>of</strong> Language and Liberal Studies (SLLS). The ELI will be both<br />

a physical and virtual point <strong>of</strong> contact for, and liaison amongst, International students,<br />

English as Second Language students, the International Centre and service and academic<br />

areas involved in supporting students new to post-secondary studies at Fanshawe College<br />

seeking English language training. It will also help the College work with other postsecondary<br />

institutions that may be interested in using the ELI for their students.<br />
