Section 3. Attitudes about a College vs. University Degree<br />

While a relatively significant proportion <strong>of</strong> students (approximately one quarter to one‐third) sit on the<br />

fence in terms <strong>of</strong> their attitudes about the benefits <strong>of</strong> a college degree versus a university degree, there<br />

is clearly a group <strong>of</strong> Prospects who see the advantages <strong>of</strong> obtaining a college degree (approximately half<br />

<strong>of</strong> Prospects overall). Sixty‐one percent “agree” that they prefer the more applied learning approach <strong>of</strong><br />

a college degree program in comparison to a university; fifty‐six percent prefer the flexible options <strong>of</strong> a<br />

2‐, 3‐ or 4‐year completion; fifty percent agree that a college degree <strong>of</strong>fers a better skill set for the job<br />

market and that they would choose to go to college because university tuitions are too expensive; and,<br />

46% agree that they would receive a better value for the education dollar at a college. Forty‐five percent<br />

agree that a college degree would be valued as highly by employers as a degree from a university (18%<br />

percent disagree).<br />

There is a higher level <strong>of</strong> agreement on the merits <strong>of</strong> a university degree versus a college degree in<br />

terms <strong>of</strong> its ability to lead to a higher paying salary (51%), and opinions are polarized about the<br />

statement that a university provides a better overall education than a college (33% agree vs. 38%<br />

disagree).<br />
