Proportions <strong>of</strong> Applications by Type <strong>of</strong> Program and Credential<br />

The chart below indicates the proportion <strong>of</strong> business applications to each <strong>of</strong> the key business area<br />

specializations: Accounting, International Business Management, General Business<br />

Administration/Management, Financial Services/Planning, <strong>Marketing</strong> and Human Resources<br />

Management; all other programs have been grouped into an “Other” category.<br />

Applications to Accounting programs have remained relatively steady at 15% to 16% <strong>of</strong> all business<br />

applications, as have applications to <strong>Marketing</strong> (10% to 11%), International Business Management (3%<br />

to 4%) and Finance/Financial Planning (3%) programs. There has been a significant decline in General<br />

Business/Administration/Management program applications (24% to 19%) and an increase to Human<br />

Resources Management programs (7% to 9%) and “Other” program areas (38% to 41%).<br />

Chart 5. Application Trends by Type <strong>of</strong> Business Program<br />

There has been a small increase in the proportion <strong>of</strong> those applying to a 1‐year business certificate from<br />

2006 to 2011 (4% to 5%). A more significant upward trend is noted in applications to 2‐year diplomas<br />

(48% to 51%), to business degrees (3% to 7%), and to post‐graduate certificates (8% to 11%). A notable<br />

decline is seen in applications to 3‐year diploma programs (37% to 28%).<br />

The charts on the following pages which highlight application trends by type <strong>of</strong> program illustrate there<br />

has been a decrease over the past five years in applications to 3‐year diplomas specifically in the areas<br />

<strong>of</strong> General Business Administration/Management, <strong>Marketing</strong>, International Business and<br />

Finance/Financial Services and Planning. Applications to 3‐year diplomas in Accounting and HR<br />

Management have trended up or remained steady.<br />

Applications to degree programs and post‐graduate certificates in all various study areas have either<br />

remained steady or have trended up over the last few years.<br />
