8. Regulation & Accreditation<br />

The Canadian Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Marketing</strong> (CIM) is the predominant institute regulating marketing<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional development in Canada. The <strong>Bachelor</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Commerce</strong> (<strong>Digital</strong> <strong>Marketing</strong>) program will be<br />

accredited by the CIM, and graduates will receive a free membership at the Graduate Member level.<br />

The CIM accredits university and college programs that provide approved levels <strong>of</strong> marketing content in<br />

their curriculum. A letter <strong>of</strong> endorsement from the Canadian Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Marketing</strong> is included in this<br />

section.<br />

The Canadian Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Marketing</strong> recognizes eight classes <strong>of</strong> membership. These are:<br />

1. Fellow<br />

2. Honourary<br />

3. Registered Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Marketer<br />

4. Pr<strong>of</strong>essional member<br />

5. Associate member<br />

6. Graduate member<br />

7. Student member<br />

8. Affiliate member<br />

In addition, and especially relevant for a career in digital marketing, students who wish to demonstrate<br />

search engine marketing skills to employers can study and certify to become Individually Qualified in<br />

Google AdWords.<br />

8.1 The Canadian Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Marketing</strong> ‐ GCInst.M Designation<br />

The Graduate level membership carries the designation “GCInst.M.” The institute accredits college and<br />

university programs in Management Studies, Business Administration, or other programs with a<br />

marketing specialization. Fanshawe’s Business Administration – <strong>Marketing</strong> advanced diploma program is<br />

accredited, and the proposed <strong>Bachelor</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Commerce</strong> (<strong>Digital</strong> <strong>Marketing</strong>) program will also be accredited<br />

as indicated in the letter from the CIM.<br />

Graduate Members are eligible to advance to “Associate Member” after having qualified with three<br />

years <strong>of</strong> experience in a marketing position, the last year at some level <strong>of</strong> management. With five years<br />

<strong>of</strong> qualifying marketing experience, and two years at management level, an Associate Member advances<br />

to “Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Member.” To move to higher levels, a Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Member must pass an exam to<br />

demonstrate understanding <strong>of</strong> marketing standards and principles.<br />

8.2 The Google Certification Program<br />

Students who wish to demonstrate search engine marketing skills to employers can study and certify to<br />

become Individually Qualified in Google AdWords. To gain qualification, exam takers must pass the<br />

Advertising Fundamentals exam (with a score <strong>of</strong> 85% or higher), plus one advanced‐level exam from the<br />

list below.<br />
