6.2.3 Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development for Faculty<br />

Fanshawe is committed to pr<strong>of</strong>essional development for faculty members, and targets 3% <strong>of</strong> its fulltime<br />

faculty complement to be absent on paid pr<strong>of</strong>essional development leave at any one time.<br />

Most pr<strong>of</strong>essional development leaves for faculty members involve year‐long sabbatical leave to<br />

pursue further education, conduct research, or work in industry, but may also involve participation<br />

in faculty exchanges, seminars, conferences, or other short‐term leave arrangements.<br />

6.3 Support Services for Students<br />

Fanshawe College <strong>of</strong>fers a full range <strong>of</strong> services to help students succeed. Assistance is available<br />

through Counseling and Accessibility Services for finding a job, academic counseling (career counseling<br />

or personal counseling). Counseling and Accessibility Services also supports mature students and First<br />

Nations students. Student Success Advisors provide academic (including learning styles assessment,<br />

study skills, procrastination and test anxiety issues), personal and career counseling to students.<br />

The Board <strong>of</strong> Governors has established the following indicators <strong>of</strong> student success (Strategic Plan<br />

Implementation, Appendix B, p. 8):<br />

To achieve these goals, the College provides a range <strong>of</strong> support services to students, including those<br />

listed below.<br />

Student Success Advisors assist students in reaching their academic and personal goals. They work as<br />

part <strong>of</strong> a team <strong>of</strong> faculty and staff that is very committed to the success <strong>of</strong> each and every Fanshawe<br />

student. The Lawrence Kinlin School <strong>of</strong> Business is home to two Student Success Advisors (SSAs),<br />

including one dedicated to international students. In the First Nations Centre there is an Aboriginal SSA<br />

who is able to provide culturally sensitive support to students.<br />

Career Counseling provides assistance in identifying career goals to all students registered in a full‐time,<br />

post‐secondary program and for three months following graduation. Career counseling assists<br />

individuals in looking at factors that may be influencing their career development including: lifestyle,<br />

personality, interests and values as well as aptitudes, work experience, education, and labour market<br />

trends.<br />

Personal Counseling includes food issues, domestic violence, adjustment concerns, stress management,<br />

self‐confidence and self‐esteem, community referrals, family adjustment concerns, and community<br />

resources available to the adult learner.<br />
