Deacon Anthony was ordained a Deacon by Archbishop Francis M. Zayek on July 11, 1982. The celebration began with a Pontifical Liturgy of Thanksgiving in Our Lady of Lebanon Church. The Most Rev. Gregory J. Mansour, Bishop of the Eparchy of Saint Maron of Brooklyn, was the main celebrant and homilist. The Most Reverend Thomas J. Welsh, retired Bishop of the Diocese of Allentown, Penn.; Rev. Kamil Al- Chouefati, Administrator of Our Lady of Lebanon Church; Rev. Msgr. Sami Hayek, Retired Pastor; Msgr. Maroun Asmar, Pastor of St. Sharbel Church, in Somerset, N.J., and Rev. Jean Younes, Assistant Rector of Our Lady of Lebanon Cathedral in Brooklyn, N.Y., concelebrated. Msgr. Alfred A. Schlert, Vicar General of the Diocese of Allentown; Msgr. John Grabish; Rev. Richard Delzingaro C.R.S.P.; all priests of the Diocese of Allentown also concelebrated. Deacon Anthony served as Master of Ceremonies for the Liturgy. Our Lady of Lebanon choir, accompanied by a brass quartet of students from Notre Dame High School, provided the music for the Liturgy. The Sisters of St. Paul, Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters and Sisters of St. Joseph were in attendance. Seminarians, Tony Massad, Roger AbouJaoude and Vincent Farhat assisted at the altar. Due to travel commitments, Msgr. Sami spoke in the Church rather than in the Hall. He spoke of the work he and Deacon Anthony did together and of Deacon Anthony’s dedication along with his wife, Chafica, and their children, Anthony, Jr. and Frances. He also spoke of Ann Wilhelm, who offered one of her kidneys to help Chafica live a new life in a kidney transplant on September 25, 2003. He thanked the priests of the Diocese of Allentown and in particular, Bishop Welsh who celebrated the Latin Rite liturgy in Msgr. Sam’s absence. He also expressed his gratitude to Bishop Edward P. Cullen, Bishop of Allentown. The Latin Rite priests in attendance chanted the hymn SALVE REGINA, as a thanksgiving after communion. Following the Liturgy, close to five hundred guests attended the Silver Jubilee Banquet in the Church Hall. Rev. Jean Younes, representing Msgr. Ignace Sadek, Rector of Our Lady of Lebanon Cathedral, who was unable to attend, gave the invocation. Antionette Elias led the singing of the American National Anthem and Msgr. Maroun Asmar led the Lebanese National Anthem. A video presentation, prepared by Deacon Anthony’s daughter, Frances and niece, Stacey Olson, was shown prior to the dinner.
