From the Headmaster
Bushfire and Flood Appeal – What a
wonderful response from the boys and
families of TSS to these events. At this
stage I understand over $10 000 has been
raised from a number of Prep and Secondary
fundraising activities, not to mention the
staggering number of bags containing
toys, clothes, linen and household items
collected at Prep. We suggested the boys
bring in $4 or $5 as there were flood victims
and fire victims, but clearly our families
have been more than generous with their
response.
The staff, Chaplains and I are hugely
impressed and quite ‘blown away’ with the
School community response. Certainly it
shows compassion and community service
in action. Well done.
Debating – Well done to the Senior A and
all our Debaters on a very successful start to
the season last Friday night.
Friends of Prep – Dr Wood and I spoke
at last week’s FOP meeting and I thank
the parents for the opportunity to talk
about some of our plans and programs.
I mentioned that parents new to TSS who
did not attend a Headmaster’s Information
session last year are most welcome to come
This year we celebrate our
150th birthday!
The State of Queensland and the Diocese
commemorate our rich heritage as we
celebrate, anticipate and dedicate.
On June 14, 1859 Dr Edward Wyndham
Tufnell was consecrated first Bishop of
Brisbane, and arrived here in September,
1860, to exercise Episcopal control in the
newly formed Colony of Queensland.
In the mid 1800s mainland Australia was
divided into four Dioceses; Adelaide,
Melbourne, Newcastle and Sydney. Bishop
William Tyrrell controlled what is now
South East Queensland which was part of
the Newcastle Diocese, four times the size
of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland
together. Bishop Tyrrell recognised in 1848
that the region needed its own clergy and
so began what is now the Brisbane Diocese,
formally recognised in 1859.
Anglican schools are celebrating with the
Anglican Schools Talents Quest. Each
Anglican school in the Diocese has been
given $300 and echoing the Parable of the
Talents, our students are encouraged to raise
funds through creative ways for Spiritus
agencies. We are supporting Nalingu – a
day centre for indigenous Australians in
northern Brisbane which assists in keeping
the elderly comfortable in their own
homes for as long as possible. The boys are
organising this but a sneak preview – we
plan to hold a busking week around School
to sell wristbands and end with a Battle of
the Bands. We hope that each House will
put up a band and the staff combo is in
secret training – now what about a parents’
band
The money we raise will be given to Spiritus
at a Celebration Service in the Cathedral on
Friday, May 22 where the students present
their gifts and share their experiences.
Well done to all boarders for participating in
the House Swimming Carnival with such
enthusiasm. Congratulations to Biddle for
winning the Senior Division and an overall
third in the Championship.
Thanks to all boys who joined the activities
with Somerville House students on Sunday
on Main Beach, the barbecue lunch at TSS
or pool activities. Particular thanks to Head
Boarder of Somerville, Chloe, who initiated
the idea.
Many thanks to the boarding parents who
joined their sons on the Years 11 and 12
information evenings last week. I know it
is very difficult for many parents to attend
due to distance but Mr Turley certainly
appreciated their attendance.
Year 8 boys were at orientation camp at
Hidden Creek this week. Special thanks
to all PC teachers as well as Mr Humbly,
Mr Johnson and Captain MacLachlan for
making this possible.
Unfortunately the heavy torrential rain
lead to all cricket games being cancelled. I
do hope for the sake of the cricketers the
weather will be fine next Saturday. The
rowers and swimmers continue to prepare
for their upcoming carnivals.
VET in Schools: The VET
Office
Thanks to all boys and parents who attended
the Information Evenings for Years 11 and
12, which were organised by the Dean
of Studies, Mr Turley. Queensland has a
complicated system for the derivation of OP
and Rank scores, but hopefully many of you
are now better informed and understand
this important process a little better. Thanks
also to the parents/employers who have
Page 3

expressed a willingness to be involved in
our work placement programs. It is essential
to the success of the programs to build an
effective network of such employers within
our TSS community. I currently have
boys wanting to be placed in the following
industries and would welcome any contact
from potential employers: business,
carpentry, computer technician, electro
technology and plumbing.
If you think you may be able to help then
please call or email (details below).
Also, this week’s vacancies for Traineeships
are: Cert III in Companion Animals
(animal welfare Coombabah), Cert II
Retail (surfwear and general clothing
in Southport), Cert III Warehousing
(Southport), Cert III Business Admin
(Griffith Uni GC), Cert III Business
Admin (RTO in Robina), Cert III Dental
Assistant (Year 11 in Palm Beach), Cert II
Hospitality (Hogs Breath in three locations).
Please ask your son(s) to drop by the VET
Office for details if interested.
Structured Workplace Learning:
This year, Year 10 to 12 students will be
required to participate in SWL as part of
their Business, Industrial Skills, Visual Arts
and Languages courses. I need businesses
ranging from engineering, construction,
design, advertising, multimedia, tourism
enterprises, travel… or just about any
kind of business which might be able to
introduce students to an effective work
environment, where they can put into
practice the theory being studied. Please call
if you can help… thank you.
TSS Speech Variety Club
A warm invitation is extended to all boys
from Years 7 to 12 to join this exciting,
challenging, invigorating and enriching
cocurricular activity for 2009. Boys will gain
experiences.
Speech Variety is partly based on the
traditional Toastmasters format. Boys
develop skills in Impromptu Speech,
Prepared Speech and Evaluation. This year
skills will extend to support Speech in other
School-related activities such as, a vote of
thanks or introducing a speaker. At the end
of the season in Term Four there will be
an Impromptu Speech Competition and a
Main Speech Competition.
Meetings are held fortnightly on Wednesday
evenings in Terms One, Two, Three and
Music Notes
The Music Department is busily preparing
itself for a very full year of concerts and
musical events and we do hope you are able
to attend them and support our fine young
musicians
No doubt you would have heard of this
year’s musical ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. This
action-packed and funny musical is a great
parody of the horror and science fiction
movies of the 1950s. Complete with its own
1.9 metre puppet of the human devouring
Year 8 Hidden Creek Camp
As students return from this camp this
week, it is hoped they enjoyed themselves,
met many other boys and learnt much
abut themselves, their peers and the Senior
School. Student reflections of the camp will
hopefully be in next week’s newsletter.
Year10 Hidden Creek Camp
A meeting about this camp was held last
Friday and all students should now have
received information about this camp on
March 21-28. Please contact Mr Humbley
or Mr Johnson at the School if you haven’t
received this information.
Outdoor Education Supporters’ Group
Cocktail Function
This supporters’ group function last Friday
was a relaxing social occasion and certainly
acknowledged past students (“Old Boys”)
and parents who have contributed much
to the development of the School’s two
outdoor education centres during the past
30 years. It was especially pleasing to see
Mr Bill Heck, past P&F president, present as
he was instrumental in the acquisition and
development of our ‘Straddie’ centre, which
was the beginning of the ‘formal’ structure
of outdoor education at TSS.
It also was pleasing to celebrate with
many of the people who built upon Bill’s
vision by contributing much to our other
centre, Hidden Creek. I also enjoyed
the opportunity to discuss the outdoor
education program directly with parents
of new Year 8 students. It is hoped these
parents and many others will take the
opportunity to visit Hidden Creek on its
Open Day next week.
Hidden Creek Open Day
The Open Day for our Hidden Creek
outdoor education centre is on Sunday,
March 1. This is an excellent opportunity
for new Year 8 parents to visit the centre
and see/participate in activities their sons
will have used on their camp this week.
Similarly, Year 4 parents may like to see the
venue for their son’s camp later in Term
One or Two. There is likely to be a school
bus available for transport if enough people
wish to travel this way. Further details
about the Open Day are available from Mr
Humbley or Mr Johnson.
From the Master of Prep
The generosity of our Prep community
Once again, our community has flown its
true colours. When times are tough, the
Prep community can always be counted
upon. On this occasion, with people to
the north of us suffering badly from the
destruction of flood and folk down south
coming to terms with the unimaginable
devastation of bushfire, tangible support
was required, and it was delivered, and
delivered, and delivered!
As well as more than $4,500 in cash
donations, the Prep Office (and overflow
spaces) were piled high with everything
from bikes to blankets, scooters to socks,
pillows to playthings. On behalf of all the
families who are gritting their teeth, girding
their loins and getting on with things up
north and down south, I say thank you to
each and every one of you, from the fouryear-old
who gave up his pocket money
to the fifty-four-year-old who contributed
part of the family fortune. Thank you for
showing that regardless of our apparent
emerging preference for impersonal
electronic communication, that spirit
of community, real support and distant
symbolic links, and true Aussie mateship,
are still very much alive and kicking!
TSS Prep – Run Around Australia
launch
13,500KM in year! I would like to see that!
TSS Prep students will work together to
try and meet the challenge of running
Page 9

13,500km collectively (approximate distance
around Australia) by the end of the year. I
believe the fitness levels and awareness of
the need for active lifestyles of TSS Prep
students will be given an enormous boost
by this challenge. Students will have the
opportunity to add to their ‘personal total’
and ‘school total’ during nominated PE,
Sport Skills lessons and lunch breaks. The
course is run over 1km on our Prep Ovals.
Class teachers also will be encouraged to
take their class out and run the nominated
course and have their results counted during
normal school hours. Their ‘results’ will be
recorded and then weekly updates will be
published via the School’s newsletter and at
weekly assemblies. The official launch of the
program will be next Tuesday, February 24,
3pm at our Prep Ovals.
TSS Junior Rugby (U6-U10)
TSS Prep has been a committed ‘club’
in the Gold Coast Junior Rugby (GCJR)
competition for many successful years, and
in 2009 we are looking forward to another
super year. We are proud of our Rugby
pathways into CIC and Senior School GPS
Rugby. GCJR competition is a fantastic
way for our younger boys to kick start their
Rugby career. Teams are organised into year
groups e.g. Prep – U6, Year 1 – U7, Year 2 –
Choirs 2009: I have had many enquiries
regarding membership of the choirs this
year. With the overwhelming number of
boys that are interested in singing in the
choirs I have had to limit the numbers. It is
important that it is a manageable ensemble
and to this end I have had to limit the
younger choir to 50 members and the older
choir to 60 members. Other boys have been
placed on a waiting list. The music staff will
address the structure to see where we can
make changes in order to cater for more
boys.
Drama lessons, his lesson time is published
on the timetable which is located in the
Music Department. Please ensure you know
your son’s lesson day and time and that he
has all equipment for the lesson at School
on the day.
From Friends of Prep
Many thanks to the parents who
attended the AGM and to those who
have volunteered to be Class Reps and/
or join the 2009 FOP Committee. The
commitment will not be onerous and will
see many new friends made along the way
across the Year levels. To parents new at
TSS Prep, FOP meetings are both toddler
and pram friendly so please feel welcome to
come along to FOP meetings with smaller
visitors in tow.
Liz Green and Monique Lloyd have kindly
volunteered to co-ordinate the Prep Pavilion
for the 2009 Cricket and Rugby seasons.
Anyone willing to do a duty in the canteen
during Saturday morning home games
please make contact with these ladies.
Pre-loved clothing will be co-ordinated
in 2009 by Francine Setchell and Patricia
Green. Thanks to these ladies for
volunteering their services again this year.
Volunteers are always needed to sort and
label second hand clothing. The proceeds of
second hand clothing sales come directly to
Prep so please do assist these co-ordinators
and their wonderful team of helpers.
1B, 1C, 5M, 5S, 6J, 6R and 7H.
Thanks to Karen Flynn for organising the
pizza lunch for the swim carnival and then
re-organising the lunch at short notice with
the onset of the rain. Additional thanks to
the mums who helped ferry pizzas to classes
in the rain, and then came back again on
Wednesday to help with more refreshments
at the Prep House Swim Carnival.
Raffle tickets will go home to Prep families
in Week Four via the Record Book. The
raffle is to be Term One’s major fundraiser.
support the raffle generously as all funds
raised go directly toward benefiting the boys
at Prep in 2009.
FOP is looking for prizes for the Trivia
Night to be held in Term Two. Anyone
who can help with the donation of prizes
GPS Sailing Round One
Held on Sunday, February 15, the First
VI and Second VI Team Racing Squads
travelled to Royal Queensland Yacht
Squadron for the first round of seeding
to determine the rankings for the overall
Term One Schools Competition and the
2009 GPS Sailing Championships. Under
a complete transformation from the raining,
gale force conditions of 24 hours prior, the
event was held in light 5-12 knot breeze and
basking sunshine.
The Second VI competed first, with skippers
Daniel Baum, John Bucknall and Dennis
Naguib facing teams from Iona College,
Brisbane Grammar and Moreton Bay
Boys College. Under very light and shifty
conditions the team excelled, producing
clear winning margins of 6 to 15 against Iona
Team 2, 8 to 13 against Grammar Team 4
and 8 to 13 against Grammar Team 3. Time
constraints and a dying mid-morning breeze
meant the team was not able to sail their
final two scheduled heats against Iona Team
3 and Moreton Bay Boys College. However,
both these team had suffered defeats against
teams already beaten by TSS. Leading the
ladder with three out of three wins, the team
is promoted to Division Two for next week.
The First VI sailed with consistency and
focus, always pushing the limits causing
each skipper to earn an OCS (early starting)
penalty at some stage. Showing excellent
boatspeed, tactics, handling and teamwork,
the First VI were undefeated in all five heats.
Although TSS had conceded the first match,
they were successful and overcame BBC
in the rematch. As the only team with five
wins on the day, the First VI are promoted to
the premiere division for next week.
Round Two of the series next Sunday,
February 22 will prove a far greater test, as
the First VI face the other First teams from
Grammar, BBC, Churchie and Moreton
Bay College. All sailors in the First VI and
Second VI are to meet at the boatshed this
Sunday at 9am, the bus will return to TSS at
6:30pm
Uniforms and equipment for sailing
The grace period is now well and truly over.
All members of TSSSC must provide their
own Personal Flotation Device (PFD) and
have correct uniform or they will not be
permitted to join practical training sessions.
Page 12

The uniform comprises the long-sleeve
rash top, the TSSSC boardies and the navy
bucket hat. For students who cannot obtain
the boardies in their size, the standard
navy TSS PE shorts are the only acceptable
alternative. A decent PFD costs less than a
pair of footy boots and should last for years,
speak to Drew at the sailing office if you
need any advice. All sailors are reminded of
their training commitment to attend every
Tuesday and Thursday 3:30-5:30pm and
Saturday 9am-12 noon.
Senior GPS Swimming 2009
The GPS Swim Team had another
successful time trial at Chandler pool last
Friday evening. Unfortunately we did not
field our strongest squad, yet we were able
to be competitive in the 6 x 50m freestyle
relays that occurred mid way through the
night’s program.
The Year 8 swimmers cannot be beaten for
enthusiasm and commitment at present.
They are wonderful to have on the team,
competing in many events not once, but in
some cases several times, trying their hardest
to beat their times. On the evening almost
all the boys recorded a personal best time
and this effort has seen the Year 8s win this
week’s award. This will be presented after
they return from camp. Even though the
Year 8 boys are away on camp this week,
we would like to see as many of them as
possible come up to Chandler this Friday
night.
This Friday will be our last meet at
Chandler prior to the GPS Championship.
Any swimmer wishing to put themselves in
contention for the team needs to attend this
Friday’s meet.
GPS Swimming is March 6 and there are
limited spectator tickets for parents. These
will be available to those joining the parents
swimming bus hosted by Mrs Julie Watson
Haywood and Mr John Wallace and will
be advertised and available next week.
Immediately after the GPS carnival TSS
will hold the season presentation event at
Chandler Pool.
Training sessions are: Tuesday and Thursday
mornings 6-7.15am
Tuesday and Thursday afternoons 3.30-4pm
(sprinters club!)
Page 14
Wednesday afternoon 3.45-5pm full team
session
Weekly age group meetings are held each
Thursday immediately after assembly.
Next week will see the TSS pool very busy!
Monday 23 we will host the Inter Anglican
schools Swim meet, Wednesday 25 is the
District Swimming Trials and Friday 27 we
will host Junior GPS during the afternoon
followed by our last GPS lead up meet for
the senior school boys.
Round 3 GPS Cricket vs
Churchie
As we know cricket is at the mercy of the
weather and last weekend all GPS cricket
games were cancelled due to the inclement
weather. TSS Cricketers now eagerly look
forward to playing respected rival Nudgee
College this weekend. This weekend should
see the first game for the newly formed
Open 4ths and a top of the table clash of the
1st XI teams. Let’s play tough cricket!
Cricket Communication
Please note that any updated information
is available on the website and on boards
through out the School. Each team is locked
in for one net session per week and A teams
have one morning batting session each
week as well as Wicket Keepers on Monday
mornings and specialist Bowling technique
remediation on Tuesday mornings. If
wet weather occurs please meet at the
undercover nets. Training is always on!
Rowing News
The Churchie Regatta held at Lake Kawana
on Saturday was a successful one for TSS,
despite the unfavourable weather conditions,
with the following crews receiving places:
3rd Place: Year 10 1sts, Year 10 6ths, Year 9
11ths.
2nd Place: Year 9 8ths, Year 9 2nds.
1st Place: Year 9 10ths, Year 9 3rds, Year 9
1sts, Year 11 1sts.
It was unfortunate that First VIII missed
their first race due to a broken oar. However,
they placed 4th in the B Final with BGS,
Churchie and BSHS behind them.
While most crews were very competitive it
is important to understand that the Junior
Head of the River is still two weeks away
and we must continue to gain momentum
leading up to that regatta (which is hosted by
TSS on February 28).
Helpers are still required for the TSS
Regatta, please email Brad Rose to offer your
assistance at bradley_rose@bigpond.com.
Thanks must go to all coaches and helpers
for their assistance in a long day of racing.
Well done to all boys on the way they
conducted themselves both on and off the
water and the entire shed looked great in
their correct uniform.
Year 11 student Matthew Jones competing
in the Ocean Assault series during January,
achieved a first place in the beach sprint
and 5th in the flags for his age group. He
was the only Gold Coast competitor to be a
finalist in both events. He also was a finalist
in the Taplin which was cancelled due to the
dangerous surf.
Matthew also was selected in the South
Coast Regional Surf team which competed
on January 26, where he gained a second in
the Cameron relay, third in the sprint and a
third in the flags. Well done!
First Round GPS Debating
On Friday, February 13, TSS and Ipswich
Grammar braved the rain and flooding to
compete in the first round of GPS Debating
for 2009. With TSS able to field 12 teams
this year, and having had three weeks
to prepare, we were looking very strong
and prepared heading into the night of
competition.
On the night, TSS secured eight out of the 12
debates against strong opposition in Ipswich
Grammar. Successful teams were the Senior
As (winning by 2.5 points), 11.1, 11.2, 10.1,
9.1, 9.2, 9.3 and 8.1 teams. Congratulations
to these teams and their coaches.
Many thanks to all staff who adjudicated on
the night, and to coaches for their time spent
with the boys during the past three weeks.
Thanks also to the Debating Parent Support
Group for the fantastic spread of supper on
the evening. My personal thanks to Jack
Martin and Naim Mridha for their time to
help with set-up for the night.
Our next debate will be away at Gregory
Terrace on February 27. Details for this
debate will be found in the daily notices the
week prior to the debate.
