Chevron Australia—Gorgon Gas Project
SUMMARY
The Gorgon Gas Project is one of the world’s
largest natural gas projects and the largest single
resource natural gas project in Australia’s history.
LOCATION
The Greater Gorgon Area gas field is located
130KM off the North West coast of WA. Barrow
Island is located 70Kms off WA’s Pilbara Coast.
EMPLOYMENT
The Gorgon Gas Project is set to create more than
10,000 jobs during this construction phase, with
about 300 jobs during the operational phase.
PRODUCTION
The project includes construction of a 15 million
tonnes per annum of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas)
plant on Barrow Island. The gas plant will have the
capacity to provide 300 terajoules per day of gas to
WA.
Rio Tinto Minerals—Dampier Salt
SUMMARY
Dampier Salt was built in 1967 with the first shipment
to Japan in 1972.

PRODUCTION
The Dampier Salt site is located between Karratha
and Dampier and has a total operational area of
10,014 hectares.
Dampier Salt also has a site in Port Hedland and
Lake McLeod, between the three sites, Dampier
Salt has 400 employees.
Dampier Salt produces 4.2 million tonnes of salt
per annum.
The average ship loading rate is 2,500 - 3,000
tonnes/hour of
salt.

Woodside Energy Ltd—Pluto LNG Project
SUMMARY

PRODUCTION
The Pluto LNG plant is still in it’s construction phase
which officially began in November 2007.
The first LNG cargo is estimated for March 2012.
The Pluto LNG plant is being constructed on the
Burrup Peninsula which is approximately 28kms
from Karratha.
The project has generated more than 5,000
Australia jobs since construction began.
The Pluto LNG Project has a forecast production
capacity of 4.3 million tonnes per year with one
processing train.
North West Shelf Venture—Woodside Karratha Gas Plant
SUMMARY

The six companies that form the North West Shelf
Venture are BHP Billiton Petroleum, BP Developments
Aust, Chevron Australia, Japan Australia
LNG, Shell Developments and Woodside Energy Ltd
who is also the operator of the North West Shelf
Project’s facilities, including the Karratha Gas Plant.
Domestic gas is delivered from the KGP to Bunbury
via the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline.
The Woodside Karratha Gas Plant was built in 1984
and covers approximately 200 hectares of land on
the Burrup Peninsula.
There are approximately 430 people employed onshore
and about 450 mariners are employed on the
North West Shelf Venture’s LNG shipping fleet.
The Karratha Gas Plant produces 12,000 tonnes per
day of domestic gas, 52,000 tonnes per day of LNG,
4,200 tonnes per day of LPG and 165,000 barrels
per day of condensate.
The LNG capacity of the gas plant 16.3 million
tonnes per annum.

With a network of 13 mines, three shipping terminals and the largest privately
owned heavy freight railway in Australia spanning more than 1,400 kilometres, Rio
Tinto’s Pilbara iron ore operations have expanded to an annual capacity of 220
million tonnes, with advanced plans to further expand.
There are 6,556 Rio Tinto Iron Ore employees according to 2009 figures.
Rio Tinto Iron Ore are currently in the midst of an exciting phase of expansion and
growth. Investing over $8 billion in the next five years, with iron operations in the
Pilbara expanding to 333 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a) by 2015.
This is an increase of more than 50 per cent of current capacity, representing the
largest mining project in Australian history.

API - Proposed Anketell Point Port
SUMMARY

Proposed joint venture between Aquila & AMCI to
mine and export Iron Ore in the Pilbara.
Anketell Point is located between Wickham and
Cape Lambert on the Pilbara coast line.
Construction phase will provide 3,500 jobs, and

There is a State Government commitment of $300 million from the
Royalties for Regions project.
The town will be revitalised with investment in housing, community
facilities, hospitals, medical and health centres, education and
training facilities, waterfronts and town centres.
