Chevron Australia—Gorgon Gas Project<br />
SUMMARY<br />
The Gorgon Gas Project is one of the world’s<br />
largest natural gas projects and the largest single<br />
resource natural gas project in Australia’s history.<br />
LOCATION<br />
The Greater Gorgon Area gas field is located<br />
130KM off the North West coast of WA. Barrow<br />
Island is located 70Kms off WA’s Pilbara Coast.<br />
EMPLOYMENT<br />
The Gorgon Gas Project is set to create more than<br />
10,000 jobs during this construction phase, with<br />
about 300 jobs during the operational phase.<br />
PRODUCTION<br />
The project includes construction of a 15 million<br />
tonnes per annum of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas)<br />
plant on Barrow Island. The gas plant will have the<br />
capacity to provide 300 terajoules per day of gas to<br />
WA.<br />
Rio Tinto Minerals—Dampier Salt<br />
SUMMARY<br />
Dampier Salt was built in 1967 with the first shipment<br />
to Japan in 1972.<br />

The Dampier Salt site is located between <strong>Karratha</strong><br />
and Dampier and has a total operational area of<br />
10,014 hectares.<br />
Dampier Salt also has a site in Port Hedland and<br />

Salt has 400 employees.<br />
Dampier Salt produces 4.2 million tonnes of salt<br />
per annum.<br />
The average ship loading rate is 2,500 - 3,000<br />
tonnes/hour of<br />
salt.<br />

Woodside Energy Ltd—Pluto LNG Project<br />

The Pluto LNG plant is still in it’s construction phase<br />
which officially began in November 2007.<br />
The first LNG cargo is estimated for March 2012.<br />
The Pluto LNG plant is being constructed on the<br />
Burrup Peninsula which is approximately 28kms<br />
from <strong>Karratha</strong>.<br />
The project has generated more than 5,000<br />
Australia jobs since construction began.<br />
The Pluto LNG Project has a forecast production<br />
capacity of 4.3 million tonnes per year with one<br />
processing train.<br />
North West Shelf Venture—Woodside <strong>Karratha</strong> Gas Plant<br />

The six companies that form the North West Shelf<br />
Venture are BHP Billiton Petroleum, BP Developments<br />
Aust, Chevron Australia, Japan Australia<br />
LNG, Shell Developments and Woodside Energy Ltd<br />
who is also the operator of the North West Shelf<br />
Project’s facilities, including the <strong>Karratha</strong> Gas Plant.<br />
Domestic gas is delivered from the KGP to Bunbury<br />
via the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline.<br />
The Woodside <strong>Karratha</strong> Gas Plant was built in 1984<br />
and covers approximately 200 hectares of land on<br />
the Burrup Peninsula.<br />
There are approximately 430 people employed onshore<br />
and about 450 mariners are employed on the<br />
North West Shelf Venture’s LNG shipping fleet.<br />
The <strong>Karratha</strong> Gas Plant produces 12,000 tonnes per<br />
day of domestic gas, 52,000 tonnes per day of LNG,<br />
4,200 tonnes per day of LPG and 165,000 barrels<br />
per day of condensate.<br />
The LNG capacity of the gas plant 16.3 million<br />
tonnes per annum.<br />

With a network of 13 mines, three shipping terminals and the largest privately<br />
owned heavy freight railway in Australia spanning more than 1,400 kilometres, Rio<br />
Tinto’s Pilbara iron ore operations have expanded to an annual capacity of 220<br />
million tonnes, with advanced plans to further expand.<br />
There are 6,556 Rio Tinto Iron Ore employees according to 2009 figures.<br />
Rio Tinto Iron Ore are currently in the midst of an exciting phase of expansion and<br />
growth. Investing over $8 billion in the next five years, with iron operations in the<br />
Pilbara expanding to 333 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a) by 2015.<br />
This is an increase of more than 50 per cent of current capacity, representing the<br />
largest mining project in Australian history.<br />
Although the iron ore mines are further inland <strong>Karratha</strong> and surrounding towns<br />
house many Rio Tinto employees who work at the Dampier and Cape Lambert Ports<br />
and the train maintenance sites.<br />

API - Proposed Anketell Point Port<br />

Proposed joint venture between Aquila & AMCI to<br />
mine and export Iron Ore in the Pilbara.<br />
Anketell Point is located between Wickham and<br />
Cape Lambert on the Pilbara coast line.<br />
Construction phase will provide 3,500 jobs, and<br />
after completion the port and mine will have a<br />
workforce of 1,000.<br />
The project will produce 30 million tonnes of ore<br />
per annum and $2.4 billion per year.<br />
Each train will carry approximately 15,000 tonnes of<br />
iron ore from processing to port<br />
If the proposed project goes ahead, first iron on<br />
ship is scheduled for 2014<br />
Other mining companies such as MCC and FMG<br />
have an interest in the use of the proposed port at<br />
Anketell Point.<br />
<strong>Karratha</strong>—City Of the North<br />
As part of the state government’s Pilbara Cities plan, <strong>Karratha</strong> will<br />
be transformed from the current mining town of approximately<br />
18,000 people into a significant regional city with population of<br />
50,000.<br />
There is a State Government commitment of $300 million from the<br />
Royalties for Regions project.<br />
The town will be revitalised with investment in housing, community<br />
facilities, hospitals, medical and health centres, education and<br />
training facilities, waterfronts and town centres.<br />
