Just a few weeks ago, Ferraristi
from around the country gathered for an
annual ritual and enjoyed another great
Cavallino. The weather cooperated, the
venues were beautiful, the track events
were very well attended
and, as always, the
spectacle of some of the
most beautiful, historic
and desirable Ferraris in
the world on display at
The Breakers was a
sight to behold. Add in
the appeal of watching
Preston Henn push his
Enzo to the max out on
the track, seeing Shelton
racing team members
showcase their skills,
and experiencing the
excitement of the historic
race, and it’s clear that
Cavallino definitely offers
something for everyone.
Even with all
this, there was one
stand out special guest,
the all-new Maserati
Quattroporté. Parked
across from our tent at
Moroso, where dozens
of guests enjoyed a
seafood buffet lunch
Thursday and Friday,
we watched a lot of
enthusiasts gravitate
toward this stylish
new ride, captivated
by its elegant interior
and curious
about the interior

And again, at
the Concourse d’Elegance on
Saturday, the Quattroporté
attracted an awful lot of attention
and was a real hit with FCA members.

Before I can say anything else, I’d like to start by wishing you and
your families a very great 2004! We’ll sure be doing our part as a club to help
to make this an especially great year. Don’t fret, stick with us, you and your
Ferrari will have many more happy miles on the clock before this year’s out!
The Ferrari Club of America has always been based on fun and
friendships. It’s as simple as that. Cars too of course, but without the people
and the good times, our prized Ferraris are just another mode of transportation.
I for one, wouldn’t be doing what I do for the club without the support and
encouragement of the many friends I’ve made along the way.
So let’s take a look at what’s to come! Our highly anticipated return to
the 3.7 miles of pure bladder-pounding happiness known as “Sebring” is coming
up fast on April 1. This event is real straight forward, it’s all about track time! Why
change a great thing? We’ll start as usual, with the Thursday night cocktail reception
at our host hotel, Sebring’s own Chateau Elan. Friday morning will begin with
our famous Sebring driving school, then launch quickly into two full days of virtually
uninterrupted track time! We’ll continue to run in alternating touring and
sports sessions, which should be just enough time for each of us to catch our
breath and grab a Red Bull before heading back out again, and again! We’ll also
be setting up a catered breakfast and lunch at the track on both days for everyone’s
un-hurried convenience. New this year will be the addition of go-karts, free
for our enjoyment. We’ll have a designated fun course set up in the paddock for
any of us not out on the track. Saturday night we’ll get together in the Chateau’s
banquet room to brag about our skills, swap some gossip and tell a few jokes.
On Sunday morning there will be a low-pressure concours on the lawn behind
the hotel followed by an awards brunch before we point our cars towards home.
Everyone should plan on attending the concours. It’s not about shine, it’s about
fun–track dirt and all. If it’s a Ferrari, it belongs on the lawn not in your trailer!
By now, each of you should have already received a Sebring registration form
in the mail, but we’re including another one with this Redline issue.
Remember that you must send in your registration before you’ll be allowed to
book your room at the Chateau. It’s going to sell-out fast, so don’t wait!
For our next event, we’ll be heading to the beautiful central Florida
town of Celebration, Florida, on May 22-23. Our new Central Florida Chapter
representative, Jeff Ippoliti, has put together a really neat weekend for us.
This weekend’s event is called “Ferraris at Disney” for a very good reason, as
I’m sure most of you already know, Celebration is a quaint, Disney created
residential “home town” which is actually located on the southern end of the
Disney property just south of Orlando. This town is as beautiful as you can
imagine and on Saturday, we’ll be closing down their brick-paved, tree-lined
Main Street for a downtown concours their residents will never forget. On
Sunday, Jeff is planning a rally which will no doubt show us all a side of
Orlando few of us have ever seen.
We’ll kick off the summer by heading down to the Florida Keys where
we’ll invade Islamorada’s legendary Cheeca Lodge. This will be on the weekend
June 4-6, and more details will follow soon.
For the first time this year, we’re offering an encore Sebring track
weekend to take place on September 24-26. This weekend is again being
spearheaded by Jeff Ippoliti and is designed to be a hard-core track weekend
for those of us who just can’t get in enough time behind the wheel. This weekend
slots in nicely between Monterey in August and November’s Maranello
Madness, and what a better way to fill
that gap! Jeff is a recent transplant from
the FCA’s Empire State Region where
track events are held about as often as
they can be scheduled, so look for even
more to come as Jeff gets comfortable
in his new surroundings! As always, we
do take requests, so don’t be shy about
dropping me a note with a big idea for
your area. We’re all for it. As I’ve said,
it’s a real big state with plenty of new
places to discover.
As many of you have noticed,
we are also attempting to send out the
occasional e-mail of event updates to
our members. If you have yet to receive
an e-mail from the club, please be sure
to send us your updated e-mail address
so we can add you to our list. This is a
very valuable service to our membership,
and it’s one list worth being on. As
a reminder, your personal contact information
is never shared with anyone.
This latest issue of our Florida
Redline is packed yet again full of interesting
Ferrari items you’re sure to love.
Debbie’s essay on Ferrari friendships is
especially timely and right on target.
Keith’s piece will now focus on Florida,
and we’re all sure to learn a few new
things about what’s lurking around in
our state. Tim’s tech tips are always a
must-read, and Will’s insights into the
dealership world further helps to remind
us just how lucky we are to have such a
respected and stellar team writing on
our behalf. Please remember that the
Redline is your magazine too, and your
submissions and ideas are encouraged.
So take this issue over to your favorite

We once again
took over the ultra-hip
Sopra restaurant in the
heart of Delray Beach’s
Atlantic Avenue for our
annual Florida Region
Holiday Bash. The entire
restaurant was closed for
our little gang, but you’d
have thought the joint was
packed, as the level of
laughter and good feelings
was overwhelming.
This event is always
intended to be simply a
nice gathering of friends,
both old and new, during
the holidays. A little bit of
celebration and reflection
during an otherwise hectic
time of year.
This year, fortyfive
of us took the time to
come out and eat some
really terrific food, enjoy a
great glass of wine (or
so...), and say a toast to
an awesome 2003.
While many of us
might dream about the
future, a new Enzo, or
things like world peace,
I’m sure a few of us are
still dreaming about that
dessert platter. At that one
brief moment in time, the
choice between a set of
Enzo keys and a glass of
milk wasn’t quite so simple.
We can only say
that if you missed this

There are times when each of us enjoys a little light reading, or
even some serious reading, and although we hate to admit it, the only
thing that often matters is that it’s not Ferrari related! So why not curl up
with our local Gold Coast magazine? Peruse the real estate ads... see

Nope, it’s OK, you weren’t having a bad dream.
A full-color 6-page spread in Gold Coast’s December 2003 issue
was dedicated to some of the real characters of the South Florida car
scene, and appropriately titled: “Driving Me Wild.” Several of our old
friends were featured, including:

Right again. That’s Charlie Scardina’s Challenge Stradale featured
on pages 33 - 35 of Cavallino 136. The 360 just keeps getting better
and better, and it was awesome to begin with! This is one heck of a
beautiful car made even better with the addition of those bold Italian tricolor
stripes. While Rosso Scuderia, not surprisingly appears to be the
most popular body color, it’s looking like Charlie’s leather
seats might prove to be a fairly rare option

CENTRAL FLORIDA CHAPTER
The FCA Florida Region has recently formed a chapter in Central Florida. As the newly
appointed (drafted?) chapter president, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and
present some of the upcoming events we already have scheduled for 2004.
Originally from upstate New York, where we had the distinction of having more hours of precipitation
(snow and rain) than anywhere else in the country, I relocated to Celebration in 2003. A
Ferrari owner for 20 years, I currently own a 1994 512TR and a 1995 F355 race car, originally built for
the SpeedVision Cup Race Series. I believe that Ferrari’s were meant to be driven, and now that I live
in Florida I am looking forward to being able to drive my cars more than three weeks a year...
I have been actively involved in the FCA since the late 80’s and have been a member of the
National Board of Directors for the FCA for the past several years. As Regional Director for the Empire
State Region, our board grew an essentially bankrupt and inactive region into a financially stable club,
increasing membership and hosting over 30 annual events for our members. I am confident that we
can make our chapter here in Central Florida one of the most active and vibrant in the club. I welcome
any ideas and input you may have, and am actively recruiting for our new board here. If you are interested
in joining or helping out, please contact me.
With the help and financial support of our local dealer, Ferrari of Central Florida, we have
already started on a great schedule of events for the year. We now have two Sebring track events, our
traditional weekend in April, and a new annual event the third weekend of September. We also have
an upcoming major fundraiser concours and rally at Disney being held the weekend of May 21-23, the
Festival of Exotic Cars in Mount Dora in April, the Winter Park Concours in October, Jim and Debbie’s
fall Bok Tower Rally and several F1 brunch events and parties. Please watch your e-mail, Red Line,
and the FCA News Bulletin for information and registration forms for the events, or contact my e-mail.
The upcoming concours, “Ferraris at Disney” is being held the weekend of May 21-23 at

Wish, and our goal is to raise $25,000 to help make dreams come
true for five terminally ill children in Central Florida. The event starts
Friday evening with a cocktail party and wine tasting. Saturday morning
the cars - all Italian exotics are welcome - will be displayed along
the brick streets and boardwalk in Celebration. Disney will be closing
off all of the streets to traffic in the downtown area for our event. Class
award will be presented along the waterfront, Pebble Beach style.
After the concours we will have a police escorts drive thru
Celebration, offering rides for $20 to raise money for Make-a-Wish. All
exotic cars are welcome and encouraged to participate including non
street legal and race cars. Saturday evening will include an awards
banquet for major awards and a charity auction. Sunday morning
there will be a rally around Disney, followed by a lakeside picnic.
This event is invitational, and limited to 150 exotic cars.
Senior FCA judges will be using IAC/PFA guidelines. Please e-mail
me with your car information for an invitation so you won’t be closed
out from one of the premier events of the year. We are looking for
donations and items for the charity auction, so if you can help please
let us know.
I am looking forward to a great inaugural year for the
Central Florida Chapter of the FCA, and hope to meet you all soon.

One of the most interesting aspects of enjoying the Ferrari
hobby is the variety of different outlets for you to investigate. Many
folks enjoy driving on the track and rarely attend social events. Some
others enjoy the collection of literature related to Ferrari. Still others
are just interested in concours and rarely if ever drive on the track or
in rallies. Then there is an entire culture devoted to the collection of
models and art. The truly impaired, and I can name names if necessary,
enjoy all the aspect of the Ferrari hobby. Although all these things
are interesting, I think the heart of the FCA is the friendships that are
made through our common interest that we share in an automobile.
Over the years I have seen people drift in and out of the
club. Some folks take up racing, where other tend to move away
from the car hobby entirely. We have also seen the death of members
such as Phil Baumgarten, Pat Godard and Don Andrews. For
whatever reason, there is a core group that just seems to just keep

built by Ferrari to compete in the
Formula 1 World Championship.
The project, which goes by
the code number 655, represents a further
evolution of the concepts already
seen in the F2003-GA. However, every
element of the car has been completely

more excited about visiting with your friends than running your car on the track or

TECH TIPS
THE IMPORTANCE OF CHANGING YOUR FERRARI’S BRAKE FLUID
One very important service item often overlooked when servicing
your Ferrari is changing the brake fluid. Brake fluid is alcohol based
which means it absorbs moisture that causes rust and corrosion in your
cars brake system, and also lowers the boiling point of the fluid. In most
of the Ferrari owners manuals it is recommended that both the clutch and
brake fluid be changed once a year. Ferraris equipped with ABS brake
systems changing the fluid is even more important because of the complexity
of the system and the price of the components. If you run your
Ferrari on the race track it is also very critical because of the lowered boiling
point of the fluid. Boiling brake fluid means that the brake petal travels
further to the floor, sometimes all of the way to the floor resulting in
no brakes which can result in a serious accident. Another important reason
to change your cars brake fluid is expense. Aged, dirty brake fluid
causes failed components such as calipers, master cylinders and ABS
components. Ferrari does not supply rebuilding kits for the brake calipers

1990’s and later. This means the entire calipers, and other components
will need to be changed rather than rebuilt, which is very expensive.
Changing your cars brake fluid is one of the items that by spending a
small amount of money now can save you spending a much larger
amount of money later.

THERE I WAS...
There I was minding my own business, just got home
from a trip, reading the mail and what is this?? An invitation
to New York, right in the middle of the Christmas season,
for the unveiling and introduction of the 612 Scaglietti, and
it was addressed personally and specifically to me?? How
about that!
There I was dreaming about seeing Ferrari’s new
monster 2+2 up close and personal, and the phone rings.
It’s Charlie Scardina asking if I received an invitation to
New York. I said “yes I did.” He said, “let’s go” and the
wheels started turning for out winter wonderland excursion.
As it turned out,
the party for the 612
was the day before the
lighting of the Christmas tree in Rockefeller
Center and that plus tickets to the Rockettes Christmas Pageant at
Radio City Music Hall was enough to get Cheryl and Denise interested.
I then called John Barnes to see if he and Alicia could join us, but
he said he was too busy putting the Classic together and getting the magazine
to print. However, Alicia told me Krista, their daughter, now lived in
Manhattan working at Tiffany’s, and to stop by and say hello. Stop by
Tiffany’s and say hello?! From that point on Denise and Cheryl were sitting
in the car waiting to go to the airport. How about that *@!?$.
There I was, flying to New York, to get picked up by John
Travolta’s private Ford Excursion limo, (a whole other story...). We are
taken into Manhattan, to Central Park West and Don Bartz’s favorite hotel,
(a COMPLETELY whole other story...). We get settled in, the temperature
was 25° F, and as it turns out, for the 3 days we are in New York, that will
be the highest the mercury will rise! Well, we put more clothes on, a lot
more clothes on, and hit the streets before noon. We end up at the New
York Deli having lunch with Rupert G. from the David Letterman Show. We
all want to go to Ground Zero to pay respects and see the progress of
rebuilding and repairing, so we grab a taxi and head south. The picture of
the four of us was taken in Battery Park, across the West Side Highway
from Ground Zero, showing the Globe that was the centerpiece in the courtyard of the World Trade Center.
It was pieced back together and an Eternal Flame now burns at its base, a Memorial to 9/11. A lump in my
throat and a tear in my eye will be the understatement of this article. How about that...
There I was, finally getting ready to see the newest, latest and greatest Prancing Horse. We arrive
at the Lever House, site of the unveiling. We enter, are checked in and taken through security, very
similar to the standard airport TSA interrogation
I’m sure we’ve all grown
to know and love...sorry,
pilot joke. Anyway, once
inside, the atmosphere is
FANTASTIC. On each
side of this exquisitely
decorated hall sits two
beautiful red satin
covers, the Guests
of Honor under-

neath. The champagne is flowing and everyone talks of the size of the
car and if Ferrari can really create a new, improved 2+2. The girls were
happy, Charlie and I were seeing old friends, meeting new friends, and
waiting for the big moment when who walks in, well actually more like
is escorted in, with TV cameras rolling, paparazzi flashing and everyone
watching, but Luca Cordero di Montezemolo! How about that!!!
There I was in New York City with my old and new friends,
minding my own business, enjoying this evening and who–believe it
or not–is standing right beside me, but the CZAR of FERRARI!! How
about that!!! We posed for our pictures, (which neither Charlie or I
have ever seen), and the big moment was at hand. President
Montezemolo and Maurizio Parlato, CEO of Ferrari
Maserati North America, removed the covers to present
two absolutely stunning 612 Scagliettis!! We all applauded.
Their doors were opened, we stepped in, enjoyed
and marveled these beautiful pieces of art and design
from the gentlemen and ladies in Maranello and
Modena.The rest of the evening was filled with Holiday
Wishes and talk of the lists at the dealers around the
country for these Bella Macchinas. We left the party for
a–could only be in New York–kind of dinner. A good friend
told us of an Italian Restaurant where we should eat. He
made a phone call and soon we were arriving at an ordinary
set of stairs, not certain if we made the right decision.
Then we walked down, walked in, and are seated at
this table especially set for us, wine flowing, music playing,we
ate until we could hardly move. There I was enjoying
great friends, great food and great cars. How about
that!!! The remainder of our “Winter Wonderland
Excursion” was filled with Santa Claus and Christmas
cheer. If you have never been to New York City for the
holidays or have never seen the
Rockettes Christmas
Pageant. Truly
Christmas at its very finest!
Well, there I was,
three days of Ferrari, Santa,
and yes, Tiffany’s. I am a
lucky man, all Denise
wanted was the Tiffany
Christmas ornament. How
about that!!!

FLORIDA “DELIGHTS”
Whenever I come to Florida in January for the Cavallino Classic, I always
try to extend the trip, not only to escape the British winter for as long as possible, but
to discover some of the perhaps lesser known Ferrari “delights” it has to offer. I am
grateful to a local friend for introducing me to perhaps one of the more bizarre offerings
a couple of years ago, when he suggested a visit to the T-Bird $wap Shop. We
returned again this year to see what, if anything, had changed.
The $wap Shop is owned by FCA member Preston Henn, who has an international
reputation as a racing driver of some standing, with many outings in the
major classic endurance races at Daytona, Le Mans and Sebring to his credit, both
as a driver and team owner/manager. His T-Bird $wap Shop racing team having run
a variety of cars including Ferrari 365 GTB/4C and
BB512/LM, plus Porsche 935 and 962 models. He
has also amassed a fine collection of cars
over the years, the jewel in the crown
being the 275 GTB “Speciale”, s/n
06885, which finished 3rd overall in the
Le Mans 24 Hour Race in 1965 driven by
Jean “Beurlys” Blaton and Willie Mairesse.
The $wap Shop is what can only really be
described as a massive (even by American standards)
flea market on the western outskirts of Fort
Lauderdale, with a large well worn sign proclaiming
“$wap Shop.” There are a range of temporary stalls
in the undulating outside parking lot that also features
a drive-in movie facility, very fifties and sixties
Americana, visions of “American Graffiti” flooded
through my mind! Upon entering the permanent
structure part of the emporium, one is greeted by a
plethora of brightly lit neon bedecked stands selling
virtually every commodity under the sun, from sunglasses,
through T-shirts proclaiming almost every
imaginable message, pet products, toiletries, trainers,
food and drink outlets–including what must be
the one of the smallest McDonalds around–to stalls
selling luridly colored candies that would probably
rot your teeth just by looking at them! If this wasn’t
enough, there is also a daily circus in an arena at the center of the various corridors
that make up the complex. Variety is the spice of life!
At the time of our earlier visit most of the cars were displayed around the
circus arena, with the 275 GTB/C “Speciale” in its own glass booth next to the main
entrance. Since then the glass booth has been extended to provide a greater
“secure” display area, and the remainder of the collection is displayed behind barriers
opposite the showcase. Before visiting the $wap Shop, the last time that I had
seen the 275 was amidst the splendor of the Garage Francorchamps 40th anniversary
celebrations (FF40) at the Cinquintenaire in Brussels, Belgium, how its surroundings
have changed!
Sharing the showcase is an eclectic range of motor racing memorabilia
including a trio of Ferrari engines–one from his ex-BBLM now serves as what must
be a very rare table base! Along with a white Testarossa actually
used in Miami Vice, you’ll also find the Famous $wap Shop
Porsche 962 and the one and only “Moby Dick” Porsche 935, still
in their racing liveries. Amongst the Ferraris displayed against the
opposite wall were a Fly Yellow “Daytona” Spider, a BB 512 Spider
conversion, 360 Modena, a 360 Spider and a yellow F50, in which
Preston Henn had just returned from some track activity at Moroso
Park, and was happy to chat with us. It transpired that the F50 was
the one that we had seen during our earlier visit, s/n #103496, at
which time it was finished in Rosso Barchetta, and was familiar to
me, as it was the car campaigned successfully in the UK by Ian
Hetherington in the FOC (UK) Pirelli Maranello Challenge race
series a few years ago. However the star of this display was
undoubtedly his glistening red Enzo rotating on a turntable at the
far end of the line-up. A really interesting place to visit, the cars are
the stars, but the stalls have there own special charm as well, and
the burgers at McDonalds taste–well, just like the burgers at
McDonalds worldwide!
You should go check out the display for yourself! The
world-famous T-Bird $wap Shop (and a world-class automotive
display) is free and open daily at: 3291 West Sunrise Boulevard
(Between I-95 and the Turnpike) in Fort Lauderdale.
