Volunteers Needed
The Outreach sponsored Annual Back to School Bash/Health Fair is scheduled for
August 10th. There are many opportunities for volunteers to get involved in this
huge event. Listed are some of the jobs that need to be filled: collecting,
sorting/assisting with clothing collection, sorting/distributing school supplies,
set-up/tear-down, refreshment planning/set-up, sign makers, welcome table,
traffic control and many, many more. This is a most rewarding experience so
come join in! There will be more meetings scheduled so plan to attend. If you

Pastor-Member Orientation (PMO)
Sunday, July 8th at 12:15 pm | FLC Room 106
Pastor-Member Orientation is an informal gathering for those who want to see who we are, what we
believe and where we are going as a church, whether you’re new to Shalimar UMC or you’ve been
attending for a while. It’s also a great way to find out how to take those “next steps” to serving and
small groups. This is required for anyone who is interested in joining Shalimar UMC.
Enjoy fellowship and lunch as the leadership team shares our mission and vision.
Learn about discipleship, small groups, volunteering and how to engage in mission.
Connect with your pastors and discover how you can get plugged in.
We become what we are committed to. By the end of the class, you will understand what next steps
you can take to be more committed to Christ and SUMC. Childcare is available (please let us know in

Summer reading opportunities await you and your family in our SUMC library! Our shelves are full
with rich reading materials, DVD’s and books on tape. Consider spending time here with your kids this
summer and introduce them to fun books such as: The Wonderful Book, The Library Lion, If I Were a
Mouse and so many others! Bring your new readers in to check out our Early Readers’ series and
encourage your more “seasoned” readers to delve into our Junior Classics, Hardy Boys or Nancy
Drew series. And don’t forget to check out a summer reading book for yourself. Start a Karen
Kingsbury series or brush up on your Bible knowledge in our extensive research area. Heaven is for
Real has been so popular that we have purchased extra copies. Also, we now have Heaven is for Real
for kids! Come on in to your SUMC library and check something out!

Now Scheduling Church Directory Photography
The last time we brought our church family together for a new pictorial directory was in 2008 and
WOW, how we have changed and grown since then! Beginning Wednesday, July 25 through Saturday,
July 28 and three more weeks this summer, Lifetouch will be on campus and offering quality photos for
our church family. Please schedule an appointment online through a link on the Shalimar Church
website www.shalimar-umc.org or sign up at the display in the Family Life Center on Sunday
mornings. Stop by to see samples and to get more information on the portrait session which can also
include family pets! At your appointment you can view your photos immediately, be able to purchase
additional portraits and receive a complementary 8 x 10 of your directory photo. Volunteer help will
be needed in this process for anyone who is available. Contact Kim Margold, Program Director for
additional information, 651-0721, ext. 111.

individuals and families. Be sure to mark your attendance on Sundays so we don’t miss you! Also,

Children’s Corner (4 years old-5th grade)
Wow! What an amazing VBS: TRANSFORMED-Make a change with Jesus! We had over 315 children
and over 150 youth and adult volunteers last week! A HUGE thank you to all who helped transform
these children into disciples of Christ! Thank you office staff, Toni, Alan, Adam, Pastor Larry and
Pastor Jonathan (Jonatron) for going above and beyond and making VBS so awesome this year! I am

ACOLYTE INFO: Please remember that it is summertime so do NOT wear your robes until September
2, Communion Sunday. Big Kahuna’s party is August 18th from 9am-4pm. Cost: $10 for lunch and

courtyard at 9am, wear your bathing suit, and bring towel & sunscreen!
LAKE FOREST RANCH SUMMER CAMP: Macon, MS, for completed 3rd – completed 5th grade ONLY-
July 22-26. Parents: additional information concerning LFR will be coming to you soon by mail.
5ALIVES: for completed 5th graders only - meets this Friday, July 27 at 5pm in the Computer Lab.

KIDZ NITE OUT: JULY 6 – for kids completed kinder – 5th grade. Come for a night of games, crafts,
pizza, soda, ice cream sundaes, glow in the dark group games and fun, fun, fun. MAKES A GREAT

WEDNESDAY EVENING BIBLE CLASSES WILL CONTINUE ALL SUMMER LONG! Kidz JAM: for kids in
completed kinder–1st grade meets in Courtyard Room 6 from 6pm–8pm. Kidz PB&J: for kids in
completed 2nd–3rd grade meets in Courtyard Room 7 from 6pm–8pm. Kidz “GO”: for kids in
completed 4th-5th grade meets in the Computer Lab from 6pm–8:15pm. Each week we will “GO”
into the community to fulfill the great commission and tell others about Christ.

and for Sunday morning studies at 9:30 am. If your completed 5th grader does NOT want to move up
to youth yet, they can still hang with me until August! I would love to keep them all forever.
PROMOTION SUNDAY, August 19th: This is a day where all the children will be promoted UP to their
new Sunday school classes and meet their new teachers for Sunday school. We will have games,
snacks and prizes on this day! Sunday school hours are: 9:30 am-10:30 am every Sunday, rain or
shine!

CHEFS AND CRAFTERS!!!
Please consider contributing to our 16th Annual Arts & Crafts Holly Fair!
The Holly Fair Galleria is anxiously awaiting all those creative art and craft
projects, and the Holly Berry Bakery needs to be stuffed again with your
delicious homemade goodies.
Crafters: Maybe your Holly Fair donation could be one of those beautifully hand-stitched quilts,
or linens, woodworking, ceramic, jewelry, clothing, candles or any other art or craft project you
think might sell.
Chefs: We really need those homemade cakes, pies, cookies, breads, candies, jams, jellies and
canned fruits, vegetables, sauces and condiments.
Your donations to the Holly Berry Bakery and the Holly Fair Galleria make it possible for us to
fund those unbudgeted church needs and to continue to support various local, mission
outreaches.

Sunday, July 1st
9:30-10:30 am- “InsideOut” Sunday School! We want you to be transformed from the inside out
through the Sunday morning classes we offer. We meet together in the Youth Rooms at 9:30 for
announcements and then separate into the different classes being offered.
NO YOUTH CHOIR REHEARSALS
FUSION 3:00pm-7:00pm – We are having a 4 th of July Celebration at the home of Lloyd and
Sandy Moon. The address is 1103 Beachview Drive NE Fort Walton Beach, located at the foot of
Shalimar bridge. It’s gonna be a fun filled afternoon of tubing, volleyball, swimming and
fellowship. Starting at 3pm till 7pm, students are to be dropped off and picked up from the
Moons home.
Wednesday, July 4th
5:30-8:30pm – HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY! No programs scheduled for this evening. We are
encouraging all youth to spend the holiday with family and friends.
Upcoming Events
Underground Church July 8 th - Back in the 1920's when communism took over Russia many
Christians were being persecuted for their faith, so many reverted to underground churches where
groups of people had secret meetings in remote locations. This is a game simulating the similar
struggles that people went through, teaching students in a fun way about how even today many
people are still persecuted for their faith. Further details available next week.
Oakwood Camp July 16 th -20 th – Registration deadline is up; for those signed up you should have
already received letters with further information in regards to the camp. If you have any further
questions or did not receive a letter please contact Adam at the church. The Deadline for final
payment and to get the remainder of your paper work in is July 1 st . If you are still interested in
going to Oakwood Camp, please turn in a registration form to get signed up on the waiting list.
Once we get the final numbers in from other youth groups we will have a better idea of space
available at the camp.

“NOT OUR FIRST RODEO”
One of our friends said, “This ain’t your first
rodeo.” True, but “the ride” is not easier, just
wiser! We leave for Paraguay on the 26 th of
June. Please pray for our purchase of a
vehicle, finding a place to live, and adaptation
to new roles in ministry. Pray for the guidance
and power of the Holy Spirit working through
us so that others will believe in the Lord Jesus
and receive Him as their Savior.
For the first time we leave for the field without
our children, but Elizabeth and Kyle will be
following us shortly. They plan to teach for two
years in the school that our children attended
while with us in Paraguay. Their blog is:

COLLEEN’S FIFTIETH BIRTHDAY
Our daughter, Elizabeth, and her
husband, Kyle, hosted a “Hippie 60’s
theme” birthday party in Tulsa to
celebrate Colleen’s “Big 5 - 0” birthday.
Many good friends were there. Along
with decorations, they had songs and
trivia quizzes of the 1960’s.
We had another celebration with Daniel
and Tammy in Belleville in June.

THE REST OF THE STORY
We have really enjoyed sharing at so many churches
where we have seen and been part of how you share
the Good News in your community and in world
missions. Thank you for supporting us!
When we were not on the road visiting churches, we
were very involved in the “mission” ministries at St.
Matthew UMC where we live. We have helped with
Good News Club, and been in the cast for the Easter
and Christmas productions at the church. John has
been singing in the choir and in the men’s group,
Fortress. In June, John helped with the VBS program,
SKY, while Colleen was at a conference to learn about
ministry in other cultures.

A FOLLOWER OF JESUS
What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? In Acts 15 at the
Jerusalem Council, Peter and Paul and others argued whether
or not the Gentiles had to become Jewish and be circumcised
to follow Jesus. They decided that the Gentiles did not have to
be circumcisised and come under the Law to be Christ-
followers since it is by grace through faith in Jesus we are
saved. Today, we must ask again if a follower of Jesus has to
be a “Christian” in the Western world’s sense of Christianity.
What does following Jesus look like in other cultures without
our Western world trappings?

We are so thankful for your prayers and support this year! We drove 34,000 miles in
eleven months and visited forty churches! It has been a blessing!

1. Praise the Lord for safe travels throughout this year of Home Ministry!
2. Pray that we join the Holy Spirit as He ministers in Paraguay. We will
need leaders to help us with Alpha marriage and other Alpha programs
3. Pray for wisdom in organizing a young- marrieds’ ministry in the
Paraguayan Methodist Church.
4. Pray for our daughter, Faith, as she studies in Jerusalem this Fall for her
semester abroad program with Messiah College.
5. Pray for Kyle and Elizabeth as they prepare to go to Paraguay in July!
6. Pray for revival in Paraguay and the United States
