The 2007 OpusClinicals Users Group conference was the best yet! This year
there was a single session track so that all the attendees could get the same
valuable messages to take back to their facilities. A variety of presentations
were held that ranged from personal success stories presented by UHS
facilities to what products and features are on the horizon for Opus Healthcare
and UHS. The setting was one that welcomed feedback from the Users which
led to productive working sessions that have provided Opus Healthcare with
many ideas to build on.
The Opus staff enjoyed spending time with the UHS team in attendance. We
were able to put faces with names and learn a little more about the people we
talk to regularly. Events throughout the conference also allowed UHS staff the
opportunity to get to know their counterparts at other facilities, providing some
new contacts to network and collaborate with.
As always, the gratitude shown by the Users for Opus hosting this event is
sincerely appreciated. Thank you to all that attended and contributed to the
continuing success of the UHS/Opus relationship. Dates in early 2009 are being
considered as we look forward to the next successful Users Group conference.
NWTH Go-live
When Northwest Texas Healthcare System (NWTH) in Amarillo, Texas completed their upgrade to OpusClinicalSuite 2.1 on
July 17, 2007 a shared UHS/Opus goal to migrate all UHS 1.x users to the 2.0 version or above was met. The team for this
six-month implementation was led by Barbara Roberts, UHS Project Lead, and Stacey Stephens, Opus Project Manager,
who collaborated with the facility IS team led by Director Sam Mason.
In order to address the facility’s needs and understand the uniqueness of the different departments’ workflow, the IS
team coordinated preparatory workflow assessment meetings with Opus and the department directors. The Northwest
Texas team of Randy Taylor, OpusClinDoc Coordinator, Katie Hailey, OpusMD Coordinator and new hire John Willimon,
OpusOM Coordinator, were key contributors to the success of the implementation with their behind-the-scenes database
efforts, validation, and the logistical coordination required for a large-scale facility upgrade. In addition, they prepared the
approximately 1200 end users at the 489-bed facility by offering 83 separate training sessions over a six week period.
The on-site Super Users, gathered from UHS facilities
nationwide, joined the UHS Corporate and Opus
representatives to create a strong, experienced team that
successfully supported the upgrade. The end user community
appreciated the hands-on support they received at the main
facility as well as the multiple off-site communities including the
J.O. Wyatt Clinic, Women’s and Children’s Healthcare Center,
The Pavilion, and The Wound Care Center.
Congratulations to all of the participants for a job well done!
Highlight on the Opus QA Team
Quality Assurance is the constant pursuit of improved product superiority
in any venue. This is an extremely vital component for any successful IT
organization. The QA team is constantly evolving to
improve our best practices to achieve excellence.
The QA team’s focus is on functional testing of the
application via manual as well as automated testing,
using an IBM product, Rational Functional Tester. The
team works closely with Product Management and
Engineering to not only identify defects prior to release,
but also verify that features meet requirements. Our
QA success stems from analyst, technical writing, and
engineering efforts. Members of the QA Team include:
(back row, left to right) Tanya Lindsey, Don McCaig,
Denise Lehe, Vicki Prather (Manager), (front row, left to
right) David Silver, Jennifer Hong, Candice Wheeler, and Jennifer Treadaway,
RN. The Opus QA Team member not shown is Alan Sagen.
Opus QA will continue to drive toward improved testing processes by including
industry standard “best practices” to ensure quality of the Opus Product Suite.
Flowsheet Functionality Rollout
On September 6, 2007, the Flowsheet Task Force led by Karen
Brown, UHS Clinical Analyst, began the pilot for the initial series
of flowsheets at Doctors Hospital of Laredo. The end users worked with the Vitals, I&O, Neurologic Checklist and
Respiratory O2 flowsheets. Following several weeks of usage at Laredo, flowsheet functionality was rolled out to Fort
Duncan Regional Medical Center as an additional pilot site.
End user feedback received by ClinDoc Coordinators Carol Dixon (Laredo) and Wilma Carbonel-Mason (Fort Duncan,
CNO) reflected that the users welcomed the flowsheets as a tool for trending patients’ progress. The users also
recognized that the at-a-glance view facilitated their ability to make timely clinical judgments. Critical Care nurses at
Laredo have fully adopted the use of flowsheets to capture hourly vitals.
The UHS Development Team focused their efforts on PCA Flowsheets as the next series after receiving valuable
feedback during the Opus Users Group. This series of flowsheets was released for testing in early October with a
schedule for deployment by the end of the month. Flowsheet development efforts targeted critical care areas for the
next series.
In mid-October Robin Betts and the UHS Clinical Accounts Management team contacted non-pilot facility coordinators
to set up a roll out schedule for flowsheets.
