After years of painstaking work,
the Water Works buildings, decks and
pavilions have been restored, thanks to the
generosity of countless individuals and
organizations that have contributed
millions to the restoration.
The South Garden and Cliffside provide
connections between the
Water Works and the Philadelphia
Museum of Art, and the Schuylkill River
Trail from Center City to Valley Forge.
This creates a worthy setting for the
Water Works, one of Philadelphia’s most
impressive crown jewels.
WATER WORKS
For Philadelphia
The restoration of the South Garden
and Cliffside at the Fairmount Water
Works is a project of “Women for the
Water Works,” an initiative of the
Fairmount Park Conservancy,
the non-profit fundraising entity that
works to reclaim Fairmount Park and
create investment in its future.
This project is also supported by those
who have contributed to the Fund for the
Water Works, a special project of The
Fairmount Park Commission created to
support the preservation and restoration
of the buildings and landscapes of the
Fairmount Water Works.
The decommissioning of the Water Works in 1909
and the demolition of the Fairmount Reservoir between
1913 and 1921 reduced the South Garden’s popularity.
Alterations to the Spring Garden Street Bridge in the
1950s cut off access to the Garden from the east.
As public use of the South Garden declined, many
important site features, including original sculptures
and iron fencing, disappeared. By 2005, the seriously
deteriorated condition of the South Garden and
Cliffside posed safety concerns and did not provide
a fitting setting for the newly restored Water Works.
