Community <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Justice</strong> Services<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> Probation<br />

Ministry <strong>of</strong> Children and Family Development<br />

Target Population:<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> who are on probation.<br />

Description:<br />

Approximately 25 <strong>Youth</strong> Probation Officers (YPOs)<br />

work in multi-disciplinary teams in communities on<br />

<strong>Vancouver</strong> <strong>Island</strong>. YPOs are peace <strong>of</strong>ficers and<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> the court who supervise youth subject to<br />

court orders and agreements. They work<br />

collaboratively with pr<strong>of</strong>essionals from the justice<br />

system and community services to meet the needs<br />

<strong>of</strong> young <strong>of</strong>fenders and reduce the risk <strong>of</strong> re<strong>of</strong>fending.<br />

<strong>Vancouver</strong> <strong>Island</strong> also has two Violent<br />

Offender Specialist YPOs, two Conferencing<br />

Specialist YPOs, and three YPOs specializing in<br />

liaising with Aboriginal communities/bands.<br />

Services provided by YPOs include:<br />

Supervising youth who have been placed on<br />

bail, probation, intensive support and<br />

supervision, supervision in the community,<br />

conditional supervision, as well as reintegration<br />

leave, extra-judicial sanctions, and peace bonds.<br />

Preparing reports for court and Crown Counsel.<br />

Facilitating referrals to community programs.<br />
