Whereas t<strong>in</strong> prices halved between the end <strong>of</strong> 2008 and the first half <strong>of</strong> 2009 (the time when<br />

the global f<strong>in</strong>ancial crisis struck) and have only slowly recovered, the price <strong>of</strong> coltan fell less<br />

dramatically and has skyrocketed s<strong>in</strong>ce the start <strong>of</strong> 2010. 235<br />

B. Export prices<br />

That cassiterite prices dropped much more <strong>in</strong> proportion to coltan <strong>in</strong> 2009 is also clear from the<br />

average export prices for m<strong>in</strong>erals <strong>in</strong> the DRC.<br />

prices. Asian Metal provides monthly m<strong>in</strong>imum/maximum prices for coltan <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> average prices. <strong>The</strong> period shown runs from January<br />

2008 until July 2010 as to provide the most recent <strong>in</strong>formation on the one hand and still <strong>in</strong>clude the 2008 global crisis on the other hand,<br />

allow<strong>in</strong>g for an analysis <strong>of</strong> the evolution <strong>of</strong> prices.
