1. FOREWORD BY THE PRO-VICE CHANCELLOR
(RESEARCH AND INNOVATION)
Nursing research is not just medical research, nor is it just
scientific research, or research in arts or humanities, or
social sciences. Nursing research is about understanding
the present and navigating the future of nursing practice.
The profound changes in medical sciences that have
occurred in the past decade create great challenges for
nursing. Revised operating contexts through societal
and organisational changes or the altered expectations
of patients through information from the internet are
just some of the other challenges that must be met.
But how should practice in nursing or other healthcare professions change
yetcontinue to be effective and achieve the expected high standards of care Only research can point
theway.
Research that provides answers is well planned, carried out well and reported effectively. These
threerequirements are very important and may seem simple. But are not always easily achieved. How
doesa researcher know that her or his work is of the necessary standard The answer lies in
thedevelopment, support and empowerment of a community of researchers. The University of Ulster
isproud that our Institute of Nursing Research fulfils all the criteria for such a community.
The boundaries of the Institute do not lie within the School of Nursing or even within the
University.Rather they extend into a range of disciplines, for example Public Health, General Practice
and HealthEconomics, and into health and social care services worldwide. The many and very valuable
jointappointments with healthcare trusts, projects undertaken jointly with DHSSPS or NHS staff
andinternational collaborations ensure that the Institute has wide-ranging impact.
At the University of Ulster many of the members and associates of our Institute of Nursing Researchare
also staff of our School of Nursing. They contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduateprogrammes
of study in Nursing that, for more than 30 years, programmes have been recognisednationally and
internationally as providing excellent preparation for careers in nursing, includingleadership
positions. We will continue to ensure that teaching and research are each informed by theother,
believing as we do in individuals that contribute significantly to both of these equally
worthwhileendeavours.
Many organisations see research as the pinnacle of achievement.Others disregard it for
deflectingenergy from other tasks. But research is essential to understand why a profession is
practised or howis can be practised better! Excellent Nursing research is essential. The Institute of
Nursing Research isa main component of the University of Ulster and is well resourced in line with our
stated support forresearch in selected areas - our 17 Research Institutes.
This report sets out an exemplary record of achievement, yet again, by our Institute of
NursingResearch. I commend the work of all those associated with it; many are colleagues at the
Universityand many are members of collaborating institutions in health or social care or education –
thank you allfor your efforts. It is wonderful to see what we can do when we come from different
backgrounds toachieve shared goals.
Professor Bernie Hannigan Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation)
2. FOREWORD BY THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE DIRECTOR
In the last two years (2004 and 2005) we have built on the achievements detailed in our last
report.Significant progress has been made in strengthening our research profile. The number and
quality ofour input have increased and we have continued to attract major grants from competitive
sources offunding. The pace of successful completion of doctoral students has also accelerated in the
last twoyears. This has further enhanced the INR’s well established international reputation for the
quality of itsdoctoral programme.
Nursing research has been a priority area for the University of Ulster for the last two RAEs. There
wassignificant investment in creating new posts and in developing new researchers. Injection of new
ideascan add considerably to an existing research culture, to breathe more life in it or simply to take it
to newdirections. The setting up of an Institute of Nursing Research is a testament to the University of
Ulster’scommitment to further encourage and support academics in nursing to continue to develop
theirresearch capacities and to produce high quality research. The policy of prioritising nursing
research forfunding and other support has paid off. In 1996, nursing at UU obtained a 3b rating,
followed by a 4 inthe 2001 RAE. We are currently joint 5th out of 43 nursing departments which took
part in the exercise. With the RAE 2008 fast approaching we hope to improve on this position.
Promoting a research culture is fundamental to progress within the Institute. Over the last two years
wehave organised a number of research away days, colloquiums, workshops and invited lectures.
TheInstitute provides a forum for discussing and sharing ideas for research, and a base for
visitingscholars.
We have continued to build upon our international collaborations, in particular with the Universities
inthe USA and Australia. Our relationships with universities in England, Scotland, Wales, the south
ofIreland and the rest of Europe have strengthened. We have made significant in-roads in
ourcollaborations with universities in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Jordan.
Apart from conducting high quality research and training new researchers, we put particular
emphasison working in partnership with colleagues in the health sector so that our research can have a
directimpact on policy and practice. To this end, we have created 10 joint posts with Health Trusts
andHealth and Social Services Boards. These include 3 professors (one with the Royal Group of
Hospitals, one with the Altnagelvin Hospital Trust and one with the Eastern Health and Social Services
Board).Their contribution to policy and practice development is second to none.
The growth in student numbers, the need to attract more external research income, produce highquality
papers and to engage in knowledge transfer can put unrealistic demands on academics’ time, energy
and skills. And when they are expected to excel in eachof these roles, the pressure can indeedbe
great. To make efficient use of resources and opportunities, one has to take into account thestrengths,
aptitudes, interests and career aspirations of academics. Selectivity, based on the principlesof equality
and fairness, on the other hand, consists of a division of labour which recognises whatindividuals are
best at and supporting them to achieve their full potential. This is of benefit to them andto the institution
as well.
The achievements of the INR could not have been achieved without the commitment, hard work
anddedication of all staff in the INR and the School of Nursing. Overall the Institute of Nursing
Researchprovides a sense of ownership, identity and pridefor everyone in the Institute and in the
School ofNursing.
